NOTICE OF TEMPORARY ISSUE AT CITY HALL CONSTRUCTION SITE Due to high winds today (March 10th), a portion of the scaffolding on the west side of City Hall construction is pulling away from the structure and may collapse. The construction site has been secured and no one is in danger, provided all keep clear of the construction site on the west side of the building. Okland Construction is managing and monitoring the situation. Please stay away from the west side of the building. The Millcreek Common side (east side) is safe and not at risk. Thank you for your cooperation. ---PAGE BREAK--- Prepare Your Home for Potential Flooding Limited Quantities of Sandbags Now Available MILLCREEK. The weather is warming up but the snow and rain are still coming. There is a tremendous amount of snow in the mountains, which we hope will melt at a gradual pace. Because Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate, it's time to start thinking about sandbags. When properly placed, sandbags will re-direct storm and debris flows away from where they can do the most harm. If you have had a history of flooding on your property, you should have a supply of sandbags on hand, and likely know where best to place them. If you have not had flooding in the past but think your property may be susceptible this year, you may want to think about whether you should have some sandbags on hand as well. Sandbags MUST be placed on private property. Do not line them along the street where they will get in the way of snow plow efforts. Do not stack sandbags on top of snowbanks. They will not be effective and will be very difficult to clean up. Clean up of sandbags placed by property owners will be the responsibility of that property owner. A limited number of sandbags (first come, first served) are available at the salt pile location at 3805 S Wasatch Blvd. Millcreek residents can pick them up, with a limit of ten bags per property. We will be bringing in more sandbags in the next few days. Sandbags will also be staged at several other locations around the city, including at City Hall. As these bags become available, we will advertise locations. Watch this newsletter as well as the city social media outlets for more information on staging locations or sandbag filling events, if needed. Sandbags can also be obtained from Salt Lake County Public Works Operations Division, 604 W 6960 S. Please check their website or call (385) 468-6101 for additional information. . ---PAGE BREAK--- Here is some information on sandbags taken from the Salt Lake County Homeowners Guide for Emergency Flood Control: Filling Fill sandbags half full. Sand is preferable if readily available however local soil may be used. Gather top of sandbag and tie securely with heavy string. Placement Care should be taken to stack sandbags in accordance with the illustrations. Tamp each sandbag into place, completing each layer prior to starting the next layer. Limit placement to three layers unless a building is used as a backing or sandbags are pyramided as shown. Limitations Sandbags will not seal out water. Sandbags deteriorate when exposed for several months to continued wetting and drying Use sandbags to prevent overtopping of existing levees and for retaining flood waters where no back-up material is available Fill sandbags 1/2 to 2/3 full but leave enough flap to turn under. Ends can be left open. For heights of one foot or less , lay three single courses with sacks ---PAGE BREAK--- For heights greater than one foot - When bags are placed, flatten out and fill voids by mashing bags with feet and vigorously tamp each course of the levee section. This action is important for creating a stable levee which will be as impervious to water as possible. Loosely-placed sandbags improperly keyed together may result in failure and cause serious damage. Levee Section - For heights in excess of two feet (approx. follow the same pattern and build on the side as indicated by dashed lines above. Alternate header course (bags placed crosswise) and stretcher courses(bags placed Estimating Materials: Average weight of each filled sandbag is approximately 50 lbs. Approximately 1,000 sandbags are required for each 100 sq. ft. of surface (height multiplied by distance). REMEMBER - VERY IMPORTANT!! PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO CLEAR OUT ANY STORM DRAINS NEAR YOUR PROPERTY!! Getting the snow melt into the storm drains is the best way to protect your property and those downhill. ---PAGE BREAK--- Skyline's Rosander Wins 1st in Multi-Region Battle of the Bands MILLCREEK.
