See agenda below Planning Commission NEWS RESIDENT OF MILLCREEK HELPS YOUNG GIRLS HONE IN ON THEIR SELF-WORTH MILLCREEK. Ciara Mosquito is a Millcreek resident with a calling. Bullied as a kid in her Colorado middle school, Ciara worked hard as she grew up to regain her sense of self-worth. Determined that other young girls avoid her unhappy experience, she founded the Shimmer Sparkle Shine Project (SSSP) in 2011 (at age 16). ---PAGE BREAK--- 9/16/2019 Millcreek resident helps young girls hone in on their self-worth 2/14 Weds., 9/23/19, 5 PM Millcreek City Hall 3330 S. 1300 E. See agenda below Click here for our Calendar of Events The SSSP is a non-profit organization that hosts workshops to helping young girls to realize, develop, and value their sense of self-worth. Workshops include such activities as examining before and after photos of photoshopped models and then working together to create ads that show real beauty. Examples of other activities include group discussions about how using their talents to help others helps them feel better about themselves, and then they make dolls for donation to children's grief support groups. They write down kind things they have done or experienced that day, and then use those papers to create chains of kindness. The goal is to "help girls and women through positive activities that nourish them to realize their own individual worth and potential." Ciara explains that the young girls in the SSSP workshops are at the age (8-13) when mental health disorder begin to appear. While the girls discuss the fact that a healthy life requires getting enough sleep, staying active, and eating nutritious foods, they also brainstorm ways to mentally de-stress, and then they rotate through workshop stations centered around mental health activities, such as yoga or meditation. Here are comments from some of SSSP workshop participants about what they have learned about self-worth: "Self-worth to me is that little voice that says “hello beautiful” when you look in the mirror, “You got this girl!” you when you have a challenging day, and “you deserve this” when your day is fantastic. It is accepting your accomplishments, cheering yourself on and encouraging yourself and others through all that we face." "To me self-worth means being proud of who you are, it’s about knowing your and weaknesses and being comfortable in your own skin, and being able to learn from the past to make a better future." ---PAGE BREAK--- 9/16/2019 Millcreek resident helps young girls hone in on their self-worth 3/14 "Self-worth means love for yourself. It means respecting who you are. It means being okay with making mistakes, making change, and being okay with rejection.... It’s recognizing that there is no one like you."
