07-09-21: BIG ROAD PROJECTS; BACKPACK DRIVE; BLOOD DRIVE; ABOUT LIONS CLUB; etc. View this email in your browser Highland Drive Work Underway Announcements PUBLIC MEETINGS NEWS Tackling the Big Roads MILLCREEK. We have had a lot of questions and complaints about the condition of some of the major roads in Millcreek. We wanted to give you ---PAGE BREAK--- City Council Mon., 7/12/21 No Work meeting Regular meeting 7 pm City Hall, 3330 S 1300 E Agenda below Virtually join HERE an update on the big ones that are currently under construction or have construction scheduled. Some of the "Big Roads" spanning Millcreek are UDOT roads and therefore their responsibility. These include 3300 South, 700 East and State Street. Others, including Highland Drive, 3900 South and 900 East as they run through Millcreek are city roads for which we are responsible. Our city engineer and his team work with our Salt Lake County Operations partners to annually survey each road in the city to determine the condition and what is needed. On neighborhood streets you will often see a slurry seal or an overlay that is designed to extend the life of the pavement in order to avoid more expensive mill and overlay or complete road rebuilds down the line. We are constantly looking for funding sources to pay for the improvements needed on many Millcreek roads. Road projects are very costly, take time for surveying, engineering and construction and can seriously impact our driving public and the residents who live along these roadways. Our goal is to keep our residents updated on the progress being made on tackling needed repair on the big roads. Highland Drive - There is a lot going on along Highland Drive. This "Big Road" in our city has needed improvements for a long time. When we incorporated, this is one of the roads we inherited that was in bad condition. A few years prior to incorporation, a treatment was used along the road that is now failing. The roadway surface is so eroded that snowplows deposit piles of asphalt chips on the sidewalks along with the snow and crews have had to be deployed to shovel it up. Starting next week, we will be completing a much needed "mill & overlay" along Highland between 3300 and 3900 South. This project will cost around $300,000, and will be paid for through the city Capital Improvement Project fund. Slow down and watch for construction in that area. The project should be completed in a little over a week and one lane will be open in each direction at all times. Expect slow downs and if possible avoid the roadway until ---PAGE BREAK--- construction is complete. As a bonus, in addition to having a much improved roadway, the millings that will be taken off the old road are going to become a temporary parking lot for the Millcreek Common project, the anchor for the new Millcreek City Center. Residents will be able to drive along new pavement to get to the Common to ice skate just in time for the holidays. The section of Highland between 3300 South and the SLC city limits has been re-striped to a single lane in each direction with a center turn lane. This matches the re-striping that was completed by SLC heading north and is designed to provide better access to local businesses without causing back-ups and rear end crashes. The recent fire that required the closure of 1300 East for a week created big problems along Highland but has since been resolved as 1300 East reopened. A traffic study will be completed in a few months to determine how the new striping is working. This section of Highland abuts several in progress or anticipated large building construction projects which will require utility work to be done along the roadway and the city is going to wait to improve that section to avoid cuts in an improved road. The Mountair Streetscape along Highland Drive between 3010 South and Miller Avenue is scheduled to be completed this summer. although the project is on hold waiting for Rocky Mountain Power to move some power poles. 3900 South - This "Big Road" as it runs between 2300 East and I-215 is being completely rebuilt in coordination with Holladay City. It will include sidewalks, a brand new road surface, streetlights, bike lanes and all the aspects of a complete street. Construction will be completed later this year. In the meantime, single lanes in each direction are still operating, but this would be a good area to avoid when possible. 900 East - A "Big Road" coming up next year will be work along 900 East between 3900 and 4500 South to match the work that has previously been done along 900 East north of 3900 South. Watch for construction starting up early next year. We appreciate the patience of our residents as we work to create safer and ---PAGE BREAK--- upgraded "Big Roads" throughout the city. You can follow current, upcoming and completed projects in the maps section of the city website HERE. Remember, please slow down in construction zones. TONIGHT! ---PAGE BREAK--- Granite School District Backpack and School ---PAGE BREAK--- Supply Drive The annual Granite Education Foundation Backpack and School Supply Drive is underway. MILLCREEK. The Granite Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, organizes a supply drive each year to collect backpacks and school supplies for kids in their schools to make certain that every student in need has the necessary tools to attend school and fully participate. Millcreek has been issued a personal challenge by Holladay City Mayor Rob Dahle to help the foundation reach their goal of 15,000 backpacks and Mayor Silvestrini is issuing a challenge to Millcreek to join in this very worthy effort. Your family, neighborhood, church group, business or volunteer organization can join in the fun by going shopping to fill a new backpack with paper, pencils, and crayons along with a little community love. If you don't have the time to go shopping but still want to help, monetary donations are always appreciated. Just $10 will provide for the needs of one student. Let's show our kids and Holladay City what Millcreek can do! Fill a backpack and drop it off at Millcreek City Hall, Monday-Friday from 8 to 5 between now and August 7th. Make a day of it and come to City Hall just before closing time on Thursdays and grab dinner with the family from one of the food trucks in the parking lot at City Hall. If you choose to make a cash donation, please indicate that you are a Millcreek resident so we can keep track. There is a critical need for blood right now! In order to help out, the Millcreek Emergency Preparation Committee BACKPACK & SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE INFORMATION OR TO DONATE, CLICK HERE ---PAGE BREAK--- will be holding a blood drive on Tuesday, July 20. Click HERE to register ---PAGE BREAK--- Check Out the Service Projects HERE ---PAGE BREAK--- DROUGHT IMPACTS ARE BECOMING MORE VISIBLE We are seeing that residents are responding to requests to reduce their outdoor water use and the useage rates are declining. That is a very good thing, thank you Millcreek for helping out during this historical drought. You will notice our parks are also starting to look a little brown. Our partners at county parks are doing their best to balance the need for parks to be places of respite or play against the need to conserve water. You will see these signs popping up in park spaces, please understand that the sod is not going to be allowed to die, just go into hibernation for a while. Lions Club Parade a Huge Success! Thank you to the East Mill Creek Lions Club for a successful 4th of July Parade. We missed this event last year and are so glad to have it back! Here is a message from the Lions Club President, Chris West, talking about the great things the Lions Club does to benefit the residents of Millcreek: The East Mill Creek Lions Club was chartered by the International Association of Lions Clubs on December 2, 1943. The Inaugural Charter Night was celebrated on January 15, 1944. The club was formed when members of the East Mill Creek Betterment Society voted to affiliate with the International Association of Lions Clubs. Our Club is a member of the Lions Club International Foundation whose mission is to support the efforts of Lions clubs and partners in serving communities locally and globally, giving hope and impacting lives through humanitarian service projects and grants. We, the members, all volunteers, have worked hard to make our community a better place for our families, neighbors, and businesses. The main events we host and sponsor are the Fourth of July Community Celebration (the breakfast and ---PAGE BREAK--- parade), a fund raiser for our other events including Share The Harvest (donations of turkey and meal items for Thanksgiving to those in need), the annual Easter Egg Hunt and we gather donated eyeglasses (Lions are known throughout the world for their work to improve the lives of the visually impaired and prevent avoidable blindness). And the Lions has recently sponsored Troop 5 (the oldest troop in the State) for the BSA; includes 2 troops, one for the girls and one for the boys (they were the color guard in this year’s parade. On behalf of our members, I want to thank everyone for their generosity in supporting our activities. The 4th of July Celebration has been going on for 75+ years. Thanks to all our volunteers who worked alongside us in putting the event together – including the setup/take down of the park items, those folks participating in the parade; we know time and energy goes into putting the entries together: floats, decorating bicycles, trikes, our elected officials, Unified Fire Authority (UFA), Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Unified Police Department (UPD), judges, the Holladay and South South Lake Lions Club members, the Hill Air Force Base flyover and more. We love seeing all those chairs on the parade route a day or two before the parade and thank all of you for supporting our event. Again, we want to thank everyone for participating in this community event. Our goal is to serve and brighten the lives of those in our community.
