OFFICE OF THE CITY COUNCIL WWW.SLCCOUNCIL.COM 451 SOUTH STATE STREET, ROOM 304 TEL [PHONE REDACTED] FAX [PHONE REDACTED] P.O. BOX 145476, SALT LAKE CITY UT 84114-5476 EMAIL: [EMAIL REDACTED] February 15, 2022 Salt Lake County Council 2001 South State Street N2-200 Salt Lake City, UT 84114-4575 Chair Stringham and Members of the County Council: Salt Lake City and Millcreek are concerned that large-scale development associated with the Tree Farm mine proposal in close proximity to Salt Lake City’s protected watershed will unnecessarily place the Parleys Canyon water resources at risk. These water resources are critical to health and stability in Salt Lake County. The reliance on current and future water supplies by more than 360,000 people County-wide underscores the necessity of careful alignment between development and water resource protection. Fugitive dust emissions from proposed mining uses in Parleys Canyon into the Salt Lake City regional watershed and neighboring reservoirs pose a threat to the health, safety, and general welfare of Salt Lake valley residents and water customers. The interest of Millcreek and Salt Lake City in this matter is notably regional. Adverse material impacts from the mining operation are likely to span water quality and resources, air quality, public health and economic resilience. For example, adverse dust impacts to Millcreek’s Canyon Rim neighborhood and Salt Lake City’s Parleys area neighborhoods would be a direct detriment to quality of life, as it would be for other County residents in many locations. Please act now to keep mining a thing of the past in the central Wasatch mountains, our globally-renowned tourism and recreation powerhouse. Please remove mining in the FCOZ through the proposed amendment. Sincerely, Dan Dugan Erin Mendenhall Jeff Silvestrini Council Chair Mayor Mayor Salt Lake City Salt Lake City Millcreek CC: SALT LAKE CITY COUNCIL MILLCREEK COUNCIL SALT LAKE COUNTY MAYOR JENNY WILSON
