Members of the Millcreek Youth Council had the great opportunity to attend Local Officials Day at the Utah State Capitol this past Wednesday. They were joined by youth councils throughout the state, some coming from as far as St. George. The youngsters were able to visit the Capitol building, hear from local leaders, and see firsthand how the Legislature operates. Attendees participated in workshops throughout the day, including a mock committee hearing that taught them how to debate and propose amendments to bills, and a planning and zoning activity wherein they strategically planned out a large parcel of land and filled it with housing, commercial venues, and public transportation. At the new Hyatt Regency Hotel, the youth heard from Utah's First Lady, Abby Cox. She spoke to them about the importance of showing up, and how to be builders of legacies. Millcreek Mayor Jeff Silvestrini, who is also President of the Utah League of Cities and Towns, spoke about how cities utilize taxpayer dollars to provide services to residents and how cities are planning to reduce water consumption and deal with growth. The Councils finished the day with the chance to hear from Governor Spencer Cox. ---PAGE BREAK--- Members of the Millcreek Youth Council pose for a picture at the Hyatt Regency Hotel after a full day of workshops at the Utah Legislature's Local Officials Day. Governor Cox spoke to the group about current issues facing Utah, such as the rapid decline of the Great Salt Lake and inflation, and how the youth of today are the policymakers of tomorrow. He encouraged all attendees to contact their legislators about the issues they are passionate about, and reminded them that they, as youth, can make a difference in government today. The Millcreek Youth Council looks forward to this opportunity every year. We are grateful to the ULCT for putting on this educational event. City Council Asking for Feedback MILLCREEK. The City Council is seeking feedback on ranked choice voting (instant runoff voting) — the process used by the City in the 2021 election. Millcreek opted into the pilot project for this form of election for the 2021 election. The city has the opportunity to opt into the program again this year for the 2023 election. Before making that decision, the council would like to hear from you. Each month our partners at Wasatch Front Waste & Recycling divert one recycling truck with about 500 pounds of blue can collections and do a sample sort to see just how good recycling efforts are. Acceptable items to recycle are tin cans, plastic jugs & tubs, plastic bottles, paper boxes, paper bags, newspaper & mixed paper, cardboard, aluminum cans and empty aerosol cans. Anything else should go in your black can. Remember, when in doubt, throw it out! Cardinal rule - no plastic bags in the recycling bin If a can or bottle is very dirty, do a quick rinse and let it dry. Wet items can also contaminate your recyclables Let bottles and cans dry before putting them in ---PAGE BREAK--- the blue can and keep the lid closed on the can at all times. Rain and snow can contaminate your carefully sorted materials. Here's the challenge — Based on the 2022 sample sorts, Millcreek's average contamination rate was 19%. That's a great number but we can do better. Salt Lake City has a contamination rate of around 15%, let's beat them!! Be sure what you put in your blue can belongs in the blue can. With a little effort we can get below 15% and show SLC what we can do, let's go for it.
