12-17-21: FAREWELL TO DWIGHT MARCHANT; PARLEY'S MINE TOWNHALL; NEW CITY MANAGER; etc. View this email in your browser Announcements PUBLIC MEETINGS City Council NEWS MILLCREEK WISHES COUNCILMEMBER DWIGHT MARCHANT A FOND FAREWELL MILLCEEK. Millcreek residents are invited to join ---PAGE BREAK--- Mon., 12/20/21 Work Session - 5:30pm Regular Meeting - 7pm City Hall, 3330 S 1300 E Join virtually HERE Agenda below the City Council at a Farewell Reception for retiring Councilmember Dwight Marchant. Come say thank you to Dwight this coming Monday, 12/10/21 at 6:30 pm at City Hall, 3330 S 1300 E. The Council meeting that day will be his last meeting. We will miss him tremendously! A Message to Millcreek Residents from Dwight Marchant, Millcreek City Councilmember (D2), Who is Retiring After Five Years of Service. It has been an honor to represent District 2 on our city council these past 5 years. To serve in this capacity was never a position I had ever considered when I retired 10 years ago. With some persuasion from friends and acquaintances, I agreed to take the leap. Looking back, I must admit it has been a satisfying and experience. What has made it so? I have witnessed first hand that Millcreek residents are willing to watch out for one another. Consider the many volunteers that make up a critical part of our community and city: members of our planning commission and community councils, Venture Out and preparedness workers, student council youth, and countless others who take the time to be involved. When our citizens gave direction for us to become Utah’s newest city, we began without any funds, a place to office, vehicles, office equipment or a staff to operate our new city. Looking back, it was rather daunting. Fortunately, my fellow council members were up to the task. I have great ---PAGE BREAK--- admiration for each of them. You may have noticed that we have a female majority of women on the council. I see this as a positive. Their perspective has been invaluable. I admire Mayor Silvestrini and his leadership. He is a good listener and has been willing to perform his duties with integrity and forthrightness. He along with the other council members have avoided political infighting and I believe we have rolled up our sleeves and taken on the responsibility to build and run a city. Our backgrounds are varied but we have collaborated in what I consider is a benefit for the community. Of course, not everyone agrees with every decision we have made, but we have worked together in the process. Our ability to work together has been a highlight of my experience these past five years. I have appreciated the support of my neighbors and family. Rosemary has been at my side throughout to encourage me and, at times, share a suggestion. It has made the experience so much better. I look forward to more personal time with family, continued church service and maybe float down the Mississippi in our kayak! --Dwight Marchant ---PAGE BREAK--- A proposal has been submitted to the state to develop a mine (possible two) in Parley's Canyon. This mine could have a significant impact on all of the communities in or surrounding the canyon. Your voice and involvement are necessary to affect ---PAGE BREAK--- this issue. Please attend (in person or virtually) next Tuesday's town hall meeting, hosted by Millcreek City, to explore the issue. Mayor Jeff Silvestrini and Councilmember Cheri Jackson will provide an overview of the mine proposal, an update on the status of the application, and how citizens can get involved to affect the development of the proposed mine(s). Click here to join the town hall virtually. If you have any evidence (photographs, complaints filed, etc.) of the impacts of dust coming from the existing Parley's Canyon quarry, please bring it to the townhall or send it to Rita Lund, Millcreek Communications Director ([EMAIL REDACTED]). Students in the Fall 2021 Community Emergency Response ---PAGE BREAK--- Team (CERT) training recently completed a 9-class course with an excellent disaster simulation that allowed them to practice their newly acquired skills. Millcreek partnered with South Salt Lake CERT to complete the hands-on portion of the training that included Incident Command System (ICS) basics, search and rescue techniques, building damage evaluations, cribbing, disaster medical operations, triage, and fire suppression/extinguishing techniques. A video of our CERT members in action can be viewed below. These members of the community now have the skills to better provide immediate assistance to victims and to organize spontaneous volunteers following a major disaster. CERT trained individuals are important to the community as they can support first responders when the need exceeds their capabilities. Aside from emergency situations, CERT volunteers are also used for volunteer projects around the city that help improve the safety of our community. Wanting to get involved in CERT? The next CERT course will be offered in Spring 2022 and they would love to have you join. More information regarding the Spring course will be released once the schedule is set. For anyone interested in participating in the next CERT training or who would like access to the online courses, please register here. The Millcreek Office of Emergency Management would like to give a special thanks to Unified Fire Authority (UFA) and St. Mark’s Hospital for assisting in the instruction of the courses and for providing equipment for the hands-on training. Thanks to the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health for making the online training modules available.
