Mill Creek Elementary Principal Ann Kane was presented a well-deserved Award of Excellence as a Champion for Millcreek Kids at the Millcreek Promise Leadership Meeting earlier this month. East Mill Creek Community Council Thurs., 2/6/20, 6:30 PM Community Center Library Meeting Room 2266 Evergreen Ave. recognized a "Key Millcreek Partner." Principal Kane has been instrumental in partnering with the Millcreek Promise Program to develop and build on the many programs designed to help Mill Creek Elementary students to excel. The Read With Kids project, with more than 40 volunteers who spend time at the school each week reading one-on-one with students, has been shown to increase reading skills. In another initiative, the Millcreek Promise Program partners with United Way to provide after school programming at Mill Creek Elementary. Principal Kane is a wonderful educator with a heart of gold, willing to go out of her way for her students indeed, way out of the way: each year she climbs up on a ladder and allows herself to be duct taped to the flagpole as a reward to the students for work well done. We are so lucky to have her as a member of our community. Way to go, Principal Kane. You are indeed a Champion for Millcreek Kids! IMPORTANT NEFF'S CANYON FLOOD PLAIN MEETING MILLCREEK. A meeting about building restrictions in the Neff's Canyon Floodplain in Olympus Cove will take place at 7 PM this coming Tuesday, ---PAGE BREAK--- February 4, 2020 in the Churchill Jr. High Auditorium. The Other Side Academy to Open Millcreek Thrift Boutique Across from City Hall MILLCREEK. The Other Side Academy will soon be opening a new thrift store just across the parking lot from City Hall at 13th East and 33rd South. A ribbon cutting ceremony for The Other Side Thrift Boutique will be held on February 10th at 3 pm. The Other Side Academy is a non-profit organization that helps people who have struggled with addiction, homelessness, or criminal histories. Free of charge, the Academy provides them the opportunity to get their lives back. During the two-year program, participants learn integrity, accountability, and how to take pride in their work. The Other Side Thrift Boutique will be operated by students in the Academy as ---PAGE BREAK--- one of multiple vocational training schools, including a moving company, a construction team, and a culinary arts program. Because students operate these businesses, the Academy operates with no government funding. Every dollar earned in these businesses goes back into the Academy. The Other Side Thrift Boutique will run completely off of donations. Manager Sierra Belka says, "What makes us different from other thrift stores is we’ll pick up your donations; if it’s something we can re-sell, we’ll pick it up for free. And as a bonus, you get a tax write-off for all your donations." Sierra Belka, manager of The Other Side Thrift Boutique and graduate of The Other Side Academy, is happy to be opening the thrift store in Millcreek. Ms. Belka is herself a graduate of the Academy. "Before The Other Side Academy, I had been to multiple programs, but I still always went back to the same thing I was doing before and falling into the same habits. The Academy gave me all the skills I needed to succeed," she says. At the request of Salt Lake County District 4 Representative Ann Granato, the Salt Lake County Council has approved a $1,000 donation to the Millcreek Promise Program. This is the second year in a row that Councilmember Granato has made arrangements with the County to donate to the program. ---PAGE BREAK--- A Millcreek resident, Councilmember Granato has lived in District 4 for 60 years. She is a mother of four, grandmother of nine, small business owner and works as a Medicaid specialist for the state health department, where she helps individuals and families maximize their health care benefits while managing costs. Her experience is just one reason why she supports the Millcreek Promise Program in "Lifting all boats and removing barriers to equity in Millcreek." " Donations are what make possible such activities as our youth design workshops at Sunnyvale Neighborhood Center, space-themed award days at Mill Creek Elementary, and trips to the Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve for The Nature Conservancy’s annual Fiesta for Nature," said Promise Program Manager, Ashley Cleveland. "These types of activities have so much of an impact on a child’s day, and we are grateful for Councilmember Granato's support," she added. The Millcreek Promise Program and the kids it serves thank the County and Councilmember Granato for this generous donation. ---PAGE BREAK--- WINTER ADVENTURES IN MILLCREEK CANYON MILLCREEK.
