4/22/2019 Protect yourself, your kids, and your dogs, from high spring run-off. 1/12 DANGEROUS SPRING RUNOFF; EASTER EGG HUNT; 3900 SOUTH COMMENTS SOUGHT; EARTH DAY; TAKEBACK DAY; JOBS; SAVE THESE DATES; PARKING WARNINGS; HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE View this email in your browser Two years ago, 58-year-old Liudmila Feldman died in Parleys Creek in the Parleys Historic Nature Park (below Tanner Park) after rescuing her two dogs from raging floodwaters. UPCOMING MEETINGS City Council Mon., 4/22/19 Work session 5:30PM Regular session 7 PM 3330 S. 13th E. See agenda below Planning Commission NEWS Protect Yourself, Your Kids, and Your Dogs From High Stream Runoff MILLCREEK. Two springs ago, we tragically lost Luidilla Feldman after she jumped into Parleys Creek in the Parleys Historic Nature Park (below Tanner Park) to rescue her dogs. The dogs survived--she did not. See agenda below Click here for our Calendar of Events Last week in this same park, bystanders formed a human chain to rescue two struggling women and a dog from Parleys Creek's rushing waters. The off-leash dog had chased a thrown ball into the creek, and got stuck in the rapids. His owner and another woman jumped in after him and were immediately trapped in the icy waters. All three, and the bystanders, were fortunate to make it out. Click here for KUTV2's story. This spring, Salt Lake City Public Utilities has started releasing water from Little Dell Reservoir in order to make room for an anticipated larger-than-usual snowmelt. That means the creek is running higher now--even before the weather has gotten a lot warmer. Parleys Creek traverses the Parleys Historic Nature Park, a popular area below Tanner's Park, where dog owners can let their dogs off-leash. Every spring, this creek becomes a fast-moving torrent underneath what often appears to be a calm-looking surface. While this is an off-leash area, we strongly encourage owners to leash their dogs during this dangerous time, and keep them away from the water. Chocolate lab retriever Sydney was swept away and drowned in the swift Parleys Creek current in 2011. In 1999, then 15-year-old Billy Van Drunen almost died in the creek's spring runoff. Be careful with your kids, your dogs, and yourself, around Parleys Creek and all other creeks in the area. You'll risk your life attempting a rescue by jumping in, especially if you are the only person around. Instead, call 911 immediately. Even a strong swimmer is no match for these fast-moving waters, which are often full of debris. Emergency personnel are equipped to help pull humans and dogs out of danger and avoid drownings. Spring run-off is expected to affect streams at least through mid-June. In the meantime, be careful out there. Monday's Jordan River Cleanup is Great Way to Celebrate Earth Day MILLCREEK. Earth Day 2019 is this coming Monday, April 22nd. To celebrate, Tracy Aviary has organized a service project to help clean up the Jordan River. Millcreek's westernmost boundary is the Jordan River. Click here to see the plat map of our city. Along its length, the river is home to many different species of native wildlife including deer, beaver, fox, and many more varieties of mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and birds. Together with the Great Salt Lake and Utah Lake, the Jordan River provides a critical resting area for ---PAGE BREAK--- 4/22/2019 Protect yourself, your kids, and your dogs, from high spring run-off. 6/12 migratory birds as they travel from Canada to Central America across the Central North American Migratory Bird Flyway. Transcontinental ecosystems rely upon protection of these habitats. Click here to learn more. To join the Earth Day service project protecting these habitats, meet at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center, 1355 W 3100 S on Monday, April 22,, from 4 to 7 PM. River cleanups can be messy and require hard work. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, work boots and work gloves are strongly recommended, and bring a water bottle. What a great way to acknowledge Earth Day! Let's go get dirty! CLEAN OUT YOUR MEDICINE CABINET MILLCREEK. Spend some time this week cleaning out your medicine cabinet. Then bring your unused prescription and over- the-counter drugs to the Millcreek Community Center, 2266 Evergreen Avenue. UPD officers will be on hand to collect and dispose of your unused medications. Prescription pills of any kind will be accepted as well as over-the-counter medications. Don't forget about leftover pet medications. Needles, syringes, thermometers, sprays, liquids or empty containers will not be accepted. According to the 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. A majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends. Don't let your home medicine cabinet house a collection of unused and unneeded dangerous prescriptions. Help prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths. ---PAGE BREAK--- 4/22/2019 Protect yourself, your kids, and your dogs, from high spring run-off. 7/12 COMPANY: Right at Home of Salt Lake Personal Care and Assistance POSITION: Home Care Scheduler PAY: $13-$16 per hour DETAILS: Click here for more information If you are a licensed Millcreek business and are hiring, please email details in the above format to [EMAIL REDACTED] to be included in next week’s newsletter. We have mentioned previously that the Millcreek Code Compliance inspectors are now placing notices on illegally parked cars in Millcreek. Contrary to the understanding of many people contacting City offices or their City Council representative, these are NOT tickets. They are warning notices only. They give you a chance to correct the problem before the UPD gives you a ticket. Illegally parked vehicles include: Commercial vehicles parked for longer than 3 hours in a residential neighborhood Vehicles parked for longer than 24 hours without being moved Unlicensed or inoperable vehicles Vehicles parked on a public sidewalk or obstructing a Public Right of Way Vehicles parked on the street from November to April when the street needs to be plowed ---PAGE BREAK--- 4/22/2019 Protect yourself, your kids, and your dogs, from high spring run-off. 8/12 Millcreek hears from residents year-round with concerns about parked vehicles on streets. Oftentimes, the vehicles are abandoned or unregistered. Complaints are higher during the winter because illegally parked vehicles can prevent snowplows from adequately clearing roads. This can result in unsafe conditions for all of us. ---PAGE BREAK--- 4/22/2019 Protect yourself, your kids, and your dogs, from high spring run-off. 9/12 Meetings with the Mayor Fridays from 2-4pm have been set aside for citizens to meet with Mayor Silvestrini.
