Millcreek is pleased to announce that Google Fiber will soon bring high-speed, high-bandwidth internet to residents of Millcreek. The City Council voted earlier this week to enter into a non-exclusive license agreement for the installation of a fiber optic infrastructure network in Millcreek. In short, Google Fiber is coming to Millcreek. Millcreek will become just the third city in Utah to receive Google Fiber, joining Salt Lake City and Provo in offering a new internet alternative for some and bringing much-needed internet services to others. The first connections are likely to be along our northern boundary adjacent to the company's infrastructure in Salt Lake City. At the City Council meeting earlier this week, Jacob Brace, Government & Community Affairs manager for Google Fiber Utah, said that the company has engineers ready to begin design work on the project immediately. He said that they are hoping to start connecting people as early as 1st or 2nd quarter 2021. Brace also said that the cost for a one gigabyte connection to a house will be the same $70 they have charged residential customers since the outset of the service. Brace said that Google Fiber is excited to work with the Millcreek Promise program to help overcome hurdles that create barriers for people to gain digital access. “We’re pleased by Google’s dedication to advance digital equity within Millcreek,” said Mayor Jeff Silvestrini. “Residents of Millcreek that have not had adequate access to the internet in the past will soon benefit from fast, reliable broadband internet through Google Fiber.” Mayor Silvestrini explained that the City's contract with Google Fiber is essentially a franchise agreement that gives them access to build within the City's right-of-way. Google Fiber will bear the costs of the build-out, including repairing any streets where they install their equipment. The City will receive 2% of the company's gross revenues, paid quarterly. Mayor Silvestrini said that the contract requires Google Fiber to exercise good faith to provide service to the entire City. "They've assured us that while they prefer to install in apartment buildings over running lines up people's driveways, they want to want as many customers as they can get," he said.
