Millcreek has been awarded a $2.5 million grant from the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation through the National Parks Service Land and Water Conservation Fund to go towards the construction of Phase 2 of Millcreek Common. The grant requires that the land be held as permanent open space, which the city is committed to do, and that construction commence by August 2024. ---PAGE BREAK--- 10/9/23, 9:33 AM Millcreek awarded $2.5 million for Common Phase 2 2/14 of our website's live stream. Our website's live stream equipment is being moved to our new offices. Located in the block north of Millcreek Common, between Chambers and Miller Avenues, the site of Phase 2 is on property already acquired with funds the city previously bonded for Phase 1 of Millcreek Common. The Phase 2 site has been used for the last year or so as a staging area for City Hall construction and temporary parking for Millcreek Common. The city hall building is now substantially completed, and a new five-story parking structure currently being built on the west side of the new city hall building will replace the temporary parking. While Phase 1 of Millcreek Common is essentially the town square for the new city of Millcreek, complete with plaza space and a skating loop, Phase 2 will have much more green space. Trees, grass, and landscaping will be broken up by a skate park, playground equipment, a water feature, and an 18-hole miniature golf course. A future phase will have an outdoor amphitheater with lawn seating. “We are thrilled to bring home millions in grant dollars to help the Common grow,” said City Councilwoman Cheri Jackson, in whose district the Millcreek Common is located. “It is vital that we add more open space to our city and create areas for our community to gather and connect with nature,” she said. EPG/Terracon, the landscape architect that designed Millcreek Common’s first phase, recently won the bid to design the second phase of the project. In addition to controlling costs and quality, EPG/Terracon will be able to ensure that the two phases of the project work well together. ---PAGE BREAK--- 10/9/23, 9:33 AM Millcreek awarded $2.5 million for Common Phase 2 3/14 Mayor Jeff Silvestrini and Councilmembers Cheri Jackson and Silvia Catten present the Business of the Year award to the owner, Ben Fogel, and employees of Epic Fitness. Silvia Catten, Millcreek’s District 1 Councilmember and Chair of the Jordan River Commission Governing Board, rolled up her sleeves and got to work at the Millcreek Business Council's annual Jordan River Canoe Cleanup last Saturday. Councilmember Catten posted a message about her experience to social media and gave tips as to how we can all help care for our watershed and keep the Jordan River clean: "On Saturday I joined the Millcreek Business Council at their annual Jordan River canoe cleanup. While I’ve been on the river a few times before, I’ve never helped clean it in this capacity. It was fun, but also a little sad. This is a vital part of the valley’s ecosystem, and I think we forget that. If you’re worried about the Great Salt Lake, you should be worried about the river, too. The most eye- opening part was pulling things out that had been trapped under the water by sand or rocks or branches. Our poor river has tolerated years of pollution and abuse and that was evident in the sediment that was dredged up every time I pulled something out. So what can we do short of getting in a canoe and pulling out trash? A lot, actually! You can care for elements within our watersheds system, that impact the river. This means cleaning out gutters so trash and debris doesn’t run into the storm drain. You can take it upon yourself to become your neighborhood storm drain steward and periodically make sure debris isn’t stuck on or near the grates that flow into the storm system. It’s that easy, and super important. Special thanks to the Jordan River Commission for taking us out. Soren and Rachel were our guides for the day and I’m always so impressed and grateful ---PAGE BREAK--- 10/9/23, 9:33 AM Millcreek awarded $2.5 million for Common Phase 2 6/14 for the extra work that they do all for the Jordan River.
