Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, Millcreek continues to move forward, albiet through safe social distancing. Earlier this week, Mayor Silvestrini broke ground on the first major development of the new Millcreek City Center. The Richmond at Millcreek will be a mixed-use building on the corner of Villa Vista Avenue and Richmond Avenue, in the old parking lot of the Villa Theater, west of Adib's Rub Gallery. When completed, the new structure will house 328 residential units and 13,000 sq. ft. of street-level retail. The building is a joint effort of Atlas Ventures and Cottonwood Residential. "We have a number of incredible projects in the queue still coming to Millcreek's City Center, and this critical building is just the beginning, said Mayor Silvestrini. "As a city, all of our essential business functions are continuing through these times, including welcoming quality development projects." Click here for KUTV's report on the virtual groundbreaking. ---PAGE BREAK--- A message for Skyline students (also largely applicable to the rest of us) with tips for coping with the pandemic. Thank you Skyline High School Victoria Hatten for this great video. CENSUS 2020 UPDATE MILLCREEK. Millcreek, with a 56.4% response rate, is only #68 among 239 cities in the state. Let's get to #1 both locally and nationally. If you haven't yet responded, do it today! It's easy just click on the blue button. Complete the 2020 Census now ---PAGE BREAK--- MILLCREEK. Less than one week remains to take the Mid-Valley Active Transportation Plan survey to help plan active transportation facilities in Cottonwood Heights, Holladay, Midvale, Millcreek, Murray, & Taylorsville. More people are walking & biking to stay active while social distancing, so this survey is important now more than ever. Take some time before April 15th, while you're in quarantine, to give your opinions. What is active transportation? Biking, walking, riding a scooter, public transportation and any other means of moving around the community without using your car are all methods of active transportation. We all participate in active transportation thus your input is invaluable. Please click on the blue button and take the survey today. I SAW A BEE SWARM. WHAT DO I DO?? MID-VALLEY ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION PLAN SURVEY ---PAGE BREAK--- MILLCREEK. As much as we love spring, many honey bees that live in Millcreek are also happy because the spring flowers mean an abundance of food in the form of nectar and pollen. One of the ways that bees reproduce is for a colony or hive to split. The queen bee and about one-half of the hive members simply leave the hive and look for a new home. This is called swarming. In the process of finding a new home in a tree, house or shed, the bees stop for short while in a tree or suitable resting spot while the swarm determines where their next home will be located. Bee swarms can be large and actually appear quite menacing. Rest assured this large collection of bees has a single focus of finding a new shelter and not looking for someone to sting, unless disturbed by being sprayed with water or insecticides. If you see or experience a bee swarm, give a beekeeper you know a call you'll make their day. Most beekeepers will be thrilled to give the swarm a new home. Plus, watching a swarm being captured is always a fun experience and might pique your interest to learn more about bees. If you don’t know a beekeeper, the Wasatch Beekeepers Association (a group of Salt Lake County beekeepers) has a “Swarm Coordinator,” who keeps a list of member beekeepers who would be pleased to come and collect the swarm. You may be asked a few questions such as: How high above the ground is the swarm? How long have they been there? How large is the swarm (compared to a basketball)? Thank you for your interest in helping protect our local bees. Our swarm coordinator is Julie Arthur at [PHONE REDACTED]. ---PAGE BREAK--- MILLCREEK. Storm water is the water that falls from the sky and goes down the storm drains. As water washes off the streets into the storm drains it takes with it all the nasty things from the streets dust, salt, leaves, you name it. Since the storm drains empty into our streams and eventually the Jordan River and the Great Salt Lake, it is important to clean as many of these pollutants out before they impact the streams. Through the We All Live initiative, we've all been asked to help keep stormwater in our communities clean. Millcreek is an active member of the Storm Water Coalition and supports their efforts But there is another way to keep the streams clean by adding stormwater treatment structures to our storm drain systems. Millcreek is considering instituting a storm drain utility fee to begin to repair and replace the many old and sometimes failing storm drain systems throughout our city. As part of that plan, wherever possible, these stormwater treatment structures would be added helping keep the water clean that flows into the streams from below the streets. For additional information about Millcreek storm drains, visit the city website here.
