TAKE A PAUSE FOR COVID; COMMUNITY COUNCIL ELECTION RESULTS; NEFF'S CANYON DEBRIS; etc. View this email in your browser Tanya is a COVID "Long-Hauler." Although she is young, COVID hit her hard, and she now has a chronic illness that may last the rest of her life. Please keep the people around you safe by following the COVID guidelines. Click here for more stories about how COVID has affected Utahns Announcements UPCOMING PUBLIC MEETINGS Planning Commission Wed., 11/18/20, 5 pm City Hall, 3330 S 1300 E Limited in-person NEWS PLEASE TAKE A PAUSE IN YOUR ACTIVITIES FOR THE NEXT 10 DAYS OR SO MAYOR'S MESSAGE TO THE CITIZENS OF MILLCREEK: During the lead-up to Thanksgiving during the next 10 or 12 days, and in light of Governor Herbert's executive order this past Monday, I am ---PAGE BREAK--- attendance - MASKS REQUIRED Click here for live stream pleading with you all to observe a pause in your activities work from home where possible, visit with household members only, and limit your outside contacts to those that are only absolutely necessary. Since the first of November, more than 31,500 Utahns have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus that's equivalent to half the population of Millcreek. Almost 4,000 of those cases were diagnosed just yesterday. Hospitals are being overrun and out-of-state medical personnel are being imported to give relief to our exhausted health care workers. It's frightening to imagine what next week will bring if we continue on this course. A pause in our activities would help break the virus's hold on our community. * * * “I will no longer be cavalier in my comments. If wearing a mask reduces the transmission rate, then I will wear a mask not only to protect myself, but more important, to protect others.” Annette Copier Klassen, of Cedar City (who admitted she was guilty of downplaying the coronavirus until she chatted with a friend who lost a loved one to it). From the Salt Lake Tribune, 11/13/20. * * * The City will be implementing strict measures at City Hall through November 25th to reduce contact and gatherings for non-household groups. City Hall will be open by appointment only, except for public meetings and public hearings, and in those cases attendance will be limited to 10 people, masks must be worn at all times, and social distancing will be enforced. You can find these measures in Emergency Directive No. 6, issued earlier this week. The City’s public Wi-Fi will be restricted to outdoor use only. Residents may remain in their vehicles outside City Hall and still access the public Wi-Fi. Staff will be working remotely to the extent possible, and will be available by appointment only, which will primarily be conducted virtually or via phone. Walk- ins are discouraged unless previously coordinated with staff. Staff phone numbers may be found by clicking on the appropriate department pages at millcreek.us, or residents may call [PHONE REDACTED] to set up an ---PAGE BREAK--- appointment. Note that staff members are authorized to lock the doors to City Hall during business hours if necessary to reduce the number of people entering the building. While we dislike having to restrict access to City Hall in any way, we know that this two-week pause on social contacts outside of household members is best to protect you and our staff and to bring the COVID-19 counts down in our City. Be assured that City Hall remains fully operational and we will always have staff available during business hours to assist you, virtually whenever possible. These are trying times. We are grateful for the patience demonstrated by our residents. Let's take a pause for the next couple of weeks. We should be able to slow the spread of this deadly virus and start down the path of returning to normalcy. --Mayor Jeff Silvestrini We are republishing this video to remind you how hard our health care workers are working to deal with the pandemic's medical crisis. Please help them by following COVID guidelines so that you and the people with whom you come into contact can stay out of the hospital. COMMUNITY COUNCIL ELECTION RESULTS ---PAGE BREAK--- MILLCREEK. Thank you to everyone who took the time to learn about the Community Councils in Millcreek, read the bios of the various candidates, and then vote in the 2020 Community Council election. Congratulations to the winners, and many thanks to them for their commitment to service. Millcreek Community Council: Diane Angus Daniel Blaser Robert Brough Sahara Hayes Allen Sowards Canyon Rim Citizens Association: Nate Gibby Gary Hanneman Kory Meyerink Jonny Murdock Robert Peterson Kelly Winslow East Mill Creek Community Council: Nancy Carlson-Gotts Rob Hunsaker Gardner Reid Mt Olympus Community Council: North Voting Area: Richard Williamson South Voting Area: Heather May Derum John Knoblock Britt McPartland Kumar Shah Community councils serve a vital role in Millcreek. They are the grassroots connection to the City Council regarding planning/zoning, and capital improvement projects. They regularly report the needs and concerns of residents to the attention of the council. The four community councils in Millcreek Canyon Rim, East Mill Creek, Millcreek, and Mt. Olympus are comprised entirely of volunteers who spend their own time assisting you and the City. Elections for community council happen on the regular general election schedule. To provide consistency in membership, terms are staggered so that a few members, depending upon the size of the community council, run for office each election cycle. ---PAGE BREAK--- NEFF'S CANYON DEBRIS CLEANUP POSTPONED MILLCREEK. The Forest Service had plans to start this week burning debris piles that accumulated from cutting brush or trimming trees during the Neff's Canyon Fire. However, the tests they conducted demonstrated that the piles need to dry out a while longer. We'll keep you posted on their plans to go forward with completing the clean-up. ---PAGE BREAK--- Salt Lake County Animal Services has relaunched and expanded its Book Buddies program virtually. This is the perfect volunteer opportunity for children and a way to sooth a shelter pet. Children sign up to read to a shelter pet from their home. The program helps them improve their reading skills while helping shelter animals with socialization. Dogs and cats find the sounds of a voice very soothing. This is for beginning level readers and up. Book Buddies has been a volunteer program for children at Salt Lake County Animal Services since 2016. The program has been adjusted to give children an opportunity to interact with pets at the shelter during COVID-19. How Book Buddies Works: Parents sign their child up for a 10-minute reading session at bit.ly/slco_bookbuddies Upon registration, the participant will receive an email with a Zoom link for the upcoming session. AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION The American Heart Association wants to remind everyone that flu season is here, and getting your flu shot has never been more important. Catching the flu can weaken your immune system and your ability to fight off COVID-19. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is possible to have the flu and COVID-19 at the same time.
