In this coming Monday's meeting, the City Council will be passing a resolution to cancel the 2023 election for the races for City Council District 1 and for Mayor. Only incumbent City Councilperson Silvia Catten declared candidacy as the District 1 representative. Only incumbent Mayor Jeff Silvestrini declared candidacy for Mayor. The deadlines for a declaration have now passed, so state law would not allow any other person to declare a candidacy in those races. State law allows a city to cancel the local election for races that will not include any contested races and to declare that the candidate for the race is considered elected. See Utah Code § 20A-1-206(3). The City Council anticipates that cancelling the election for those two seats will save Millcreek taxpayers roughly $85,000 from the budgeted amount. Three candidates have declared for City Council District 3—incumbent City Councilperson Cheri Jackson, as well as David F. Holz and Scott Springer. A ranked choice voting election will be held on November 21, 2023, to determine ---PAGE BREAK--- that race. It also gives the community a direct connection between the Grandeur Peak Trailhead and the paved Parley's Trail into the US Forest Service trail system in Millcreek Canyon. Trails Utah has been hard at work to provide new local community recreational trails that are part of, or connect to, the BST, like the The Rattlesnake Trail, Parleys Pointe Trail, Millcreek Upper Pipeline Trail, and now the Grandeur Peak segment, all built in the last two years. We underestimated the cost to build the Grandeur BST due to some unexpected expenses, and are still in need of funding to finalize the project. The total trail cost will be $105,000 for planning, permitting, construction, and signage. We are $15,000 short and need your help. Established funding has been provided by the City of Millcreek, Athletic Brewing, Bonneville Shoreline Trail Committee, and the Utah Office of Outdoor Recreation. Construction should be complete in early September of this year, and we need to pay the contractor, Nature Trails. We ask that you help support us in the completion of this wonderful neighborhood asset. Please go to support this project and more!
