At the end of last week, we learned for the first time from published news about a proposed new limestone quarry in Parleys Canyon, across from the existing quarry. That quarry has a sorry history as the source of fugitive dust, which has polluted the airshed of our Canyon Rim neighborhood for years. There is legitimate reason to believe that a new, perhaps ---PAGE BREAK--- Millcreek Community Council Tues., 12/7/21, 6:30 pm City Hall, 3330 S 1300 E Or join virtually HERE larger quarry on the other side of the canyon could present similar or worse problems. Not only are there concerns about fine-particulate air quality, but the dust is a nuisance to residents, covering cars, windows, outdoor furniture, etc. Closer neighbors in the Mt. Aire community of Parleys/Millcreek Canyons have concerns about blasting and noise. Recreationalists hiking the trails of Grandeur Peak have concerns about drastic disturbance of the hillside. Two separate applications have been filed by the owner of this quarry, Tree Farm, LLC. One is a small mine application for a 10 acre operation and the other a large mine application for a mine in excess of 600 acres, apparently in the same location. The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining (DOGM) has jurisdiction over the applications, and additionally, a mining operation may require a conditional use approval from the Salt Lake County Mountainous Planning Commission. While opportunities for public input are limited to non- existent for small mine operations, it is expected that opportunities for the public to weigh-in may be available in both the large mine process and the conditional use process. Comments to DOGM can be sent to [EMAIL REDACTED] Millcreek is retaining legal counsel with mining and natural resources expertise to advise the city concerning how best to oppose this application, or at minimum, secure adequate protections to mitigate the impacts which directly affect our residents, mainly dust control. The city is working with our partners at Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities (which has concerns about water quality both up and down canyon) as well as Salt Lake County, which has jurisdiction over the land upon which this quarry would be located. The land is in the County’s Foothill and Canyon Overlay Zone, which normally restricts certain types of development on sensitive lands. However, special protection is given to mining operations in our state. If you are interested in keeping updated on this issue or wish to learn more about how you might participate in any public input process, please email Communications Director Rita Lund at Millcreek: [EMAIL REDACTED] or call the Millcreek Information Center at (801) 214-2700.
