It is IMPORTANT that everyone reviews their policy each year - as changes are made to each plan each year. All Medicare beneficiaries have the option to make enrollment changes in their prescription drug plans from October 19th – December 15th, 2015. You may set up an individual appointment with a Middleton Senior Center volunteer to assist you in making your decision. Appointments with a volunteer are available on Monday morn- ings, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. You must make an appointment no walk-ins please. To schedule an appointment call 831-2373. Take Control of Your Finances Join us on Tuesday, October 20th, at 1:00 p.m. for a program about your finances and where does your money go each month. At this special session you’ll learn techniques that will help you set goals, estimate expenses, track spending, and plan where your money is going. Plus, you’ll learn how to make choices that fit the lifestyle you want to live and establish new habits that will set you up for success. Please join us for this valuable and informative program. Bus Schedule: The Middleton Senior Center offers a number of different transportation options to Middleton residents each week. You MUST contact the Senior Center the day before you wish to use this valuable service. Transportation to the meal site and local grocery shopping is by donation. The suggested donation is $1.00 round trip to the meal site and the suggested donation for local grocery shopping is $2.00 round trip. The fee is based upon your ability to donate. No one will be denied rides for these purposes. These times are tentative and may vary depending on the route and number of people who participate. Meals are served at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. The cost of each meal is $7.50. Salad Alternative We offer cold salads as an alternative to the regular Tuesday meal at the dining center ONLY. October 13th Taco Salad Lettuce, meat (beef), cheese, diced tomatoes, diced onion, salsa, sour cream and tostado chips. If you are age 55 or older, you can participate in the programs at the Middleton Senior Center. You do not have to live in the City of Middleton to join us, and there is no membership fee. There may be a residency requirement for certain services including case management services, transportation and Meals on Wheels. Bakery Items Mondays The Middleton Senior Center receives bakery items on Mondays ONLY at approximately 10:30 a.m. from Clasen’s. Scrabble Mondays Join us to play Scrabble at 9:30 a.m. on Mondays. We have several Scrabble boards; therefore, multiple games may be played. No reservations are needed you may just show up! Cribbage Players We have a Cribbage group that plays on Monday mornings at 9:30 a.m. They are always looking for additional players. We have the cribbage boards, you can just show up. Pinochle Join our Pinochle group on Mondays and Fridays at 12:30 p.m. New members are always welcome. Your Input is Needed 2015 Case Management Survey Dane County Department of Human Services is administering the Case Management Satisfactory Survey for us again this year. Randomly selected seniors who received Case Management Services this year (January thru August 2015) will be receiving a survey in the mail in early October. If you receive a survey, please take a few minutes to complete it and return the survey in the enclosed self-addressed, stamped envelope. Dane County Aging Plan Survey Every three years, the Area Agency on Aging of Dane County’s Board of Directors is required to submit a plan identifying well-defined goals in serving senior adults. The focus areas include: Caregiver Services, Dementia Services, Elder Justice, Healthy Aging, and Senior Nutrition. The goals are being drafted by workgroups and will be posted online for your input in October. Watch for the Survey Monkey link to be listed in next month’s newsletter. Blood Pressure Screening Blood Pressure screening is on the first Tuesday of each month at 12:30 p.m. This month it will be on Tuesday, October 6th, at 12:30 p.m. Stitchers Join us on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. for knitting and crocheting in the living room. Newcomers are always welcome. Bring your projects and join this social group. Sing–Along Join us on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. for a Sing-Along with friends. Mah Jongg We have an active group of people that play Mah Jongg on Tuesday afternoons* at 12:30 p.m. If you would like to join them, just show up. If you have a Mah Jongg set, please bring it. We have all levels of players. New players are welcome. You MUST bring your own Mah Jongg card. * Please note this group does not play at the Middleton Senior Center on the last Tuesday of the month. Wood Carving Drop In We have a talented group of wood carvers that get together on Tuesday mornings 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. They bring their own projects and share with each other their creative skills and experience. Anyone is welcome to join them any time. Mending Service Mending is offered on the second Tuesday and Thursday of each month. Appointments are required. Our volunteers will do simple mending and hemming they will not alter clothing with linings. You are allowed to bring two items per appointment. The next mending days are Thursday, October 8th and Tuesday, October 13th, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Make your appointment by calling 831-2373. Coffee & The Economy Shannon Riley, of Edward Jones Investments, will begin hosting a program on the second Tuesday of each month, at 9:00 a.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. Sober Today Group An open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous meets every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome. Essential Tremor Support Group The Essential Tremor Support Group meets on the second Wednesday of each month. They will meet on Wednesday, October 14th, at 10:30 a.m. Anyone is welcome to attend. Writing Group The Writing Group meets on the second Wednesday of each month. They will meet at the Middleton Library on Wednesday, October 14th, at 1:00 p.m. Please write about one of the following: the best gift, given or received; a favorite memory of a family reunion, or a hobby. Reminiscing Group The Reminiscing Group meets the first and third Thursdays of each month at 10:00 a.m. They will meet on Thursday, October 1st and October 15th, at 10:00 a.m. Join this interesting group and share your history and stories. Low Vision Support Group The Low Vision Support Group meets on the second Thursday of each month. They will meet at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 8th. Books R Us Books R Us will meet on Thursday, October 22nd, at 10:00 a.m. This month we are reading Vacationland, by Sarah Stonich, On a lake in northernmost Minnesota, you might find Naledi Lodge—only two cabins still standing, its pathways now trodden mostly by memories. And there you might meet Meg, or the ghost of the girl she was, growing up under her grandfather’s care in a world apart and a lifetime ago. Now an artist, Meg paints images “reflected across the mirrors of memory and water,” much as the linked stories of Vacationland cast shimmering spells across distance and time. New members are always welcome. Gadget Guru Our Gadget Guru is at the Middleton Senior Center on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month to assist you with your gadgets. If you need a little help, Dave will be available on Thursday, October 8th and Thursday, October 22nd, at 10:00 a.m. Nimble Fingers Nimble Fingers meets on Thursday afternoons at 12:30 p.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. The first and third Thursdays of each month are meetings to discuss their projects and administrative topics. The remaining Thursdays they work on their projects which are donated to various community organizations. Middleton Jazz Every Thursday Middleton Jazz is a diverse group of musicians who simply love to create music. They play/practice at the Middleton Senior Center every Thursday morning, 9:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m. They play a variety of songs but specialize in New Orleans jazz. Stop by, join in or have a listen if you are in the area. Please Note: The band will not perform the morning of Thursday, October 15th, they will be performing at our Accreditation Celebration at 4:00 p.m. Rummikub & Games on Fridays A group has started playing Rummikub on Friday mornings at 9:00 a.m. This is a tile game based on Mah Jongg and Rummy. Zentangle Class Zentangle is an easy-to-learn, relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. Join us on Tuesday, October 13th, at 1:00 p.m. for two hour class to learn about this creative method of drawing. Cost is $25.00. No experience needed. Call 831-2373 to sign up. Car Weatherization The Middleton Police Department, Middleton Ford and the Middleton Senior Center invite you to the annual Car Weatherization Day on Saturday, October 17th, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Middleton Ford. Painting with Oil Pastels Art Class Join us for this class on Wednesday afternoons, October 14th - December 10th, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. A fun class for artists of any level who want to learn about the materials and techniques of oil pastels. We will complete several small paintings in this class. A list of supplies will be sent to you when you register. The cost is $145.00 for 8-classes or you may pay by the class ($25.00 per class, or $30.00 per class if you wish to have materials supplied) Call 831-2373 to make your reservation. All supplies are furnished as well as envelopes and inserts for four cards. Cost is $10. 00, space is limited. AARP Smart Driver Class AARP and the Middleton Senior Center are offering the Smart Driver class in October. This is a newly designed curriculum. The class will be on Monday, October 19th, 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The cost is $15.00 for AARP members, and $20.00 for non- members. Knitting Workshop for Everyone We are offering a knitting workshop with Doreen Forcier on Thursday afternoon. This class is for knitters of all levels. Doreen will work with you whatever experience may have. Join us Thursdays, October 22nd - December 10th, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. The cost is $65.00 per person for this 7-week workshop. You are required to bring your own knitting supplies. Energy Assistance Do you need help with energy bills? A representative from Energy Services will be at the Middleton Senior Center, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 29th. Appointments are necessary. Middleton Police Chief Speaking Chuck Foulke, Middleton Police Chief, will speak at the Senior Center on Wednesday, October 28th, at 1:00 p.m. His topic will be about Middleton Policing, and he will tie his presentation into the Just Mercy book that has been part of the UW’s Go Big Read. Craft Fair The Middleton Senior Center is hosting a Craft Fair on Friday, November 6th, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 7th, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Get your holiday shopping done early. Senior craft vendors will be selling a variety of handmade items - photograph note cards, tote bags, and knitted, sewn and crocheted items. Flu Shot Clinic The Middleton Senior Center is only holding one flu vaccination clinic this year, on Tuesday, October 27th, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Please remember to bring your Medicare Card (it is red, white and blue) or your Medicaid Card (black and white). If you do not have these benefits, the cost of the vaccination is $31.00. RSVP Driver Services 40th Anniversary & Learn about Roundabouts Join us on Tuesday, October 6th, at 10:30 a.m. for a celebration of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) at Middleton Senior Center. Jill Tutaj, Middleton Police Department Community Awareness Officer, will present about “Safely Maneuvering Roundabouts.” Refreshments will be served. To sign up please call 831-2373, and please indicate if you are a driver. ---PAGE BREAK--- 11 o c t o b e r 2 0 1 5 Christmas in Janesville Monday, December 14th, 2015 Middleton’s own, Michael Rhoads, is helping the Lincoln-Tallman House decorate the first floor of the mansion to reflect antique decorations from the period before 1915. Besides items from his own personal collection it will also include the decorations of fellow members from the Golden Glow of Christmas Past. He will be accompanying this trip as the Middleton Senior Center’s resident expert on holiday decorations. You will begin with a tour of the Lincoln-Tallman House and step back in time to a Christmas long ago. You will be transported back to an 1860’s Christmas with Victorian holiday traditions and customs through the eyes of the Tallman family. Some of these are from Michael’s own collection as well. Next, lunch is included at The Armory. Originally built in 1920 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Armory features a stunning array of brickwork, terrazzo floors and decorative iron. Soldiers from the National Guard that later became Company of the 192nd Tank Battalion during WWII, a group also known as the “Janesville 99,” trained at the Armory prior to WWII. Plated lunch includes Bunker House Salad with roasted garlic ranch dressing, fresh baked bread served with creamery butter, roasted pork loin, baby red potatoes and sautéed broccoli, coffee water, iced tea or milk and strawberry swirl cheesecake squares for dessert! Our final holiday stop, we’ll learn about a unique holiday craft at the K&W Greenery. After the workshop, you may browse the unique gift shop. Driver Escorts Volunteers are needed to provide rides to seniors for medical appointments. The schedule is flexible and volunteers designate when they are available to drive. Mileage is reimbursed.
