Bus Schedule: The Middleton Senior Center offers a number of different transportation options to Middleton residents each week. You MUST contact the Senior Center the day before you wish to use this valuable service. Transportation to the meal site and local grocery shopping is by donation. The suggested donation is $1.00 round trip to the meal site and the suggested donation for local grocery shopping is $2.00 round trip. The fee is based upon your ability to donate. No one will be denied rides for these purposes. These times are tentative and may vary depending on the route and number of people who participate. Meals are served at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. The cost of each meal is $7.50. Home Delivered Meals (Meals on Wheels) are available for home-bound seniors Diners over age 60, please donate what you can afford. For further information contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373. Salad Alternative We offer cold salads as an alternative to the regular Tuesday meal at the dining center ONLY. September 1st Chef Salad Shredded lettuce, ham, turkey, egg, cheese and assorted fresh vegetables. Your choice of dressing. September 8th Taco Salad Lettuce, meat (beef or chicken), cheese, tomato, onions, tostado chips. Salsa, sour cream on the side. September 15th Garden Salad Mixed salad, fresh vegetables, cheese, egg, celery, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, peas, green onions. Your choice of dressing. September 22nd California Cobb Salad Mixed greens, chicken, blue cheese crumbs, avocado, tomato, green onions and egg. Your choice of dressing. September 29th Spinach Salad Fresh spinach, sliced mushroom, purple onion, water chestnuts, dried cranberries and sunflower seeds. Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing Bakery Items Mondays The Middleton Senior Center receives bakery items on Mondays ONLY at approximately 10:30 a.m. from Clasen’s. Vegetarian Option We offer a vegetarian option to our lunch menu. For details contact Ted at 831-2373. Foot Care Home Health United and the Middleton Senior Center offer foot care five times each month. Foot Care is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost of Foot Care is $20.00. Contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373 for an appointment. Diabetic Foot Care We have added another morning of Diabetic Foot Care to our schedule. The cost is $28.00 per visit. This service is offered twice a month at the Middleton Senior Center. Contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373 for an appointment Scrabble Mondays Join us to play Scrabble at 9:30 a.m. on Mondays. We have several Scrabble boards; therefore, multiple games may be played. No reservations are needed you may just show up! Cribbage Players We have a Cribbage group that plays on Monday mornings at 9:30 a.m. They are always looking for additional players. We have the cribbage boards, you can just show up. Yes, You Can Join Us! If you are age 55 or older, you can participate in the programs at the Middleton Senior Center. You do not have to live in the City of Middleton to join us, and there is no membership fee. There may be a residency requirement for certain services including case management services, transportation and Meals on Wheels. Senior Center Closed The Senior Center will also be closed on Monday, September 7th, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Meals on Wheels will NOT be delivered nor will meals be served at the Middleton Senior Center. All classes, activities and programs are also cancelled. Monday Bridge Bridge on Mondays is now open to anyone who wishes to play. Please arrive by 12:30 p.m. to begin play at 12:45 p.m. Blood Pressure Screening Blood Pressure screening is on the first Tuesday of each month at 12:30 p.m. This month it will be on Tuesday, September 1st, at 12:30 p.m. Sing–Along Join us on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. for a Sing-Along with friends. Join us to sing Tuesday, September 1st and Tuesday, September 15th, at 10:00 a.m. Sheet music is provided. Mary Duckwitz and Fran Jeatran lead this group as well as accompanying on the piano. New voices welcome. Stitchers Join us on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. for knitting and crocheting in the living room. Newcomers are always welcome. Bring your projects and join this social group. BINGO BINGO is played on the last Tuesday of each month. Join us on Tuesday, September 29th, at 1:00 p.m. Come for lunch at 11:30 a.m. and stay for BINGO. Mah Jongg We have an active group of people that play Mah Jongg on Tuesday afternoons* at 12:30 p.m. If you would like to join them, just show up. If you have a Mah Jongg set, please bring it. We have all levels of players. New players are welcome. You MUST bring your own Mah Jongg card. * Please note this group does not play at the Middleton Senior Center on the last Tuesday of the month. Newsletter Assembly The October newsletter will be assembled on Tuesday, September 29th, at 8:30 a.m. for bulk mailing. Doors of the Senior Center will be open at 8:00 a.m. and assembly of the newsletter will begin at 8:30 a.m. Mending Service Mending is offered on the second Tuesday and Thursday of each month. Appointments are required. Our volunteers will do simple mending and hemming they will not alter clothing with linings. You are allowed to bring two items per appointment. The next mending days are Tuesday, September 8th and Thursday, September 15th, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Make your appointment by calling 831- 2373. Coffee & The Economy Shannon Riley, of Edward Jones Investments, will begin hosting a program on the second Tuesday of each month, at 9:00 a.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. Join him on Tuesday, September 8th, at 9:00 a.m. for coffee, pastries and a general discussion about financial issues. This month’s topic is “Roth IRAs - Retirement Can Be Less Taxing”. Wood Carving Drop In We have a talented group of wood carvers that get together on Tuesday mornings 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. They bring their own projects and share with each other their creative skills and experience. Anyone is welcome to join them any time. eReader Appointments Learn to use the library’s free eBook service, Wisconsin’s Digital Library, at a personalized electronic book training. You may make your appointment for Tuesday morning, September 29th, by calling 831-2373. You will also need to bring your library card. Essential Tremor Support Group The Essential Tremor Support Group meets on the second Wednesday of each month. They will meet on Wednesday, September 9th, at 10:30 a.m. Anyone is welcome to attend. Writing Group The Writing Group meets on the second Wednesday of each month. They will meet at the Middleton Library on Wednesday, September 9th, at 1:00 p.m. Please write about one of the following: A health experience that you or someone else you know had; A time you took a risk, such as in an activity or job, and how it turned out. What did you learn from taking that risk? Or write about a pet or animal encounter (wild or domestic). New members welcome. Reminiscing Group The Reminiscing Group meets the first and third Thursdays of each month at 10:00 a.m. They will meet on Thursday, September 3rd and Thursday, September 17th, at 10:00 a.m. Join this interesting group and share your history and stories. Low Vision Support Group The Low Vision Support Group meets on the second Thursday of each month. They will meet at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 10th. Brent Perzentka from the Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired, will bring the latest adaptive devices available from the Council of the Blind store. September Movie “Woman in Gold” Join us for an afternoon movie on Friday, September 11th, at 12:30 p.m. Sixty years after fleeing Vienna, Maria Altmann, an elderly Jewish woman, attempts to reclaim family possessions that were seized by the Nazis. With the help of young lawyer Randy Schoeberg, Maria embarks upon a legal battle to recover this painting and several others, but it will not be easy, for Austria considers them national treasures. Starring Helen Mirren, Katie Holmes and Ryan Reynolds PG 13 109 minutes Social Seniors Social Seniors will meet on Wednesday, September 2nd, at 9:00 a.m. at the Hy-Vee, 675 South Whitney Way, Madison, for breakfast, coffee and planning. On Friday, September 11th, at 5:00 p.m. meet at Midtown Pub, 2405 Allen Blvd, Middleton, for their Fish Fry. Then, on Tuesday, September 22nd, meet at the Middleton Senior Center at 4:00 p.m. to carpool to Tenney park for a Pontoon ride. Cost is $5.00 per person, if you would like bring something along to eat during the lake cruise. Performing Arts Center Season Tickets The Middleton Senior Center is purchasing group season tickets to the Middleton Performing Arts Center for the 2015-2016 Season. Senior cost is just $100.00 for 4 performances Good Vibrations on Saturday, October 4th: Swing City Dolls on Saturday, December 5th: Let’s Hang On, Saturday, February 13th: and Live from Nashville on Saturday, April 16th. Chloe Ellefson is making a fresh start as the new collections curator at Old World Wisconsin, an outdoor ethnic museum showcasing 1870s settlement life. On her first day, Chloe meets with an elderly woman who begs her to find a priceless eighteenth-century Norwegian ale bowl that had been donated to the museum years ago. Books R Us Books R Us will meet on Thursday, September 24th, at 10:00 a.m. This month we are joining the UW Go Big Read program and reading Just Mercy, by Bryan Stephenson. Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinkmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever. This month join them on Thursday, September 10th, at 1:00 p.m. Caregivers, as well as listeners, are welcome to join. Caregiver Afternoon Off The Area Agency on Aging of Dane County and the Middleton Senior Center invite all Caregivers to “Caregiver Afternoon Off, “ on Thursday, September 10th, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Middleton Library, 7425 Hubbard Avenue. Donna Manring, will present “Health & Laughter, Laughing your Blues Away, and Kate Shilling will speak about “Pro-Active Planning for Caregivers”. For additional information or to RSVP contact (608) 261-9930. Middleton Jazz Every Thursday Middleton Jazz is a diverse group of musicians who simply love to create music. They play/practice at the Middleton Senior Center every Thursday morning, 9:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m. They play a variety of songs but specialize in New Orleans jazz. Stop by, join in or have a listen if you are in the area. Gadget Guru Our Gadget Guru is at the Middleton Senior Center on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month to assist you with your gadgets. If you need a little help, Dave will be available on Thursday, September 10th and Thursday, September 17th, at 10:00 a.m. Nimble Fingers Nimble Fingers meets on Thursday afternoons at 12:30 p.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. The first and third Thursdays of each month are meetings to discuss their projects and administrative topics. The remaining Thursdays they work on their projects which are donated to various community organizations. Spanish Ellen Soto will teach several levels of Spanish this fall. It utilizes Tai Chi and Qi Gong principles, and can be tailored to individual levels. All fitness levels are encouraged to join. Scarf Dyeing Class Judy Arawinko will be teaching a scarf dyeing class at the Middleton Senior Center on Tuesday, September 22nd, at 1:00 p.m. Cost is just $15.00 and you will make a scarf with your own design to keep or give as a gift. Rummikub & Games on Fridays A group has started playing Rummikub on Friday mornings at 9:00 a.m. This is a tile game based on Mah Jongg and Rummy. Stop by to play Uno, Checkers, Chess or other games. Zentangle Complimentary Demo Zentangle is an easy-to-learn, relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. Greeting Card Making Class Judy Arawinko, an avid card maker, will be teaching another greeting cards class on Friday, October 16th, at 1:00 p.m. You will be able to let your creative side shine through with the use of special embellishments, different folding techniques and pretty papers. AARP Smart Driver Class AARP and the Middleton Senior Center are offering the Smart Driver class in October. This is a newly designed curriculum. The class will be on Monday, October 19th, 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The cost is $15.00 for AARP members, and $20.00 for non- members. Display Case Exhibitors The Middleton Senior Center has a small display case behind the front desk. We have been able to exhibit some of our senior’s small collections in this Mini- Museum. We are looking for people who would like to display their collections in September, October and November. If you are interested, contact Jill Kranz, at 831-2373. Driver Escorts Volunteers are needed to provide rides to seniors for medical appointments. The schedule is flexible and volunteers designate when they are available to drive. Mileage is reimbursed.
