You will return on Thursday, May 15th, to view your proofs and order your pictures online. The students will show you how to order them. You can order as many, or as few as you like. Make your reservation by calling 831-2373, to reserve your time. How to Pack a Suitcase Efficiently Kim Hoffman, of Mayflower Tours will teach us how to properly and efficiently pack a suitcase. Meals are served at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. The cost of each meal is $7.50. For diners over age 60, please donate what you can afford. Salad Alternative We offer cold salads as an alternative to the regular Tuesday meal at the dining center ONLY. May 6th Taco Salad Lettuce, meat (beef or chicken), cheese, tomato, onions, tostado chips. Salsa and sour cream on the side. May 13th Chef Salad Shredded lettuce, ham, turkey, egg, cheese and assorted fresh vegetables. Your choice of dressing. May 20th Garden Salad Mixed salad, fresh vegetables, cheese, egg, celery, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, peas, green onions. Your choice of dressing. May 27th California Cobb Mixed greens, chicken, blue cheese, avocado or guacamole, tomato and green onions. Your choice of dressing. Vegetarian Option We offer a vegetarian option to our lunch menu. For details contact Ted Quincey, at 831-2373. Bakery Items Mondays The Middleton Senior Center receives bakery items on Mondays ONLY at approximately 10:30 a.m. from Clasen’s. Foot Care Home Health United and the Middleton Senior Cen- ter offer foot care five times each month. Foot Care is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost of Foot Care is $20.00. Contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373 for an appointment. Diabetic Foot Care Diabetic Foot Care cost is $28.00 per visit. This service is offered each month at the Middleton Senior Center. Contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373 for an appointment. Blood Pressure Screening You may have your Blood Pressure checked on the first Tuesday of each month. A volunteer will be at the Senior Center on Tuesday, May 6th, at 12:30 p.m. No reservations necessary, just stop by. Scrabble Mondays Join us to play Scrabble at 9:30 a.m. on Mondays. We have several Scrabble boards, therefore, multiple games may be played. No reservations are needed you may just show up! Yes, You Can Join Us! If you are age 55 or older, you can participate in the programs at the Middleton Senior Center. You do not have to live in the City of Middleton to join us, and there is no membership fee. There may be a residency requirement for certain services including case management services, transportation and Meals on Wheels. For additional information contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373. Senior Center Closed The Senior Center will also be closed on Monday, May 26th, in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. Meals on Wheels will NOT be delivered nor will meals be served at the Middleton Senior Center. All classes, activi- ties and programs are also cancelled. If you have a Mah Jongg set, please bring it. We have all levels of players. New players welcome. Stitchers Join us on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. for knitting and crocheting in the living room. Newcomers are always welcome. Bring your projects and join this social group. Sing–Along Join us on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. for a Sing-Along with friends. New voices are always welcome. Mending Service Mending is offered on the second Tuesday and Thursday of each month. Appointments are required. Our volunteers will do simple mending and hemming they will not alter clothing with linings. You are allowed to bring two items per appointment. The next mending days are and Thursday, May 8th and Tuesday, May 13th, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Make your appointment by calling 831-2373. Newsletter Assembly The June newsletter will be assembled on Tuesday, May 20th, at 8:30 a.m. for bulk mailing. Doors of the Senior Center will be open at 8:00 a.m. and assembly of the newsletter will not start until 8:30 a.m. Please consider helping out. BINGO BINGO is played on the last Tuesday of each month. Join us on Tuesday, May 27th, at 1:00 p.m. Come for lunch at 11:30 a.m. and stay for BINGO. Hats and Tales Hats and Tales will be meet on Wednesday, May 14th, at 10:00 a.m. at Little Red Preschool. Please bring a short children’s book to read to the students. This month they will meet on Wednesday, May 14th, at 10:30 a.m. New members are welcome. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Program Join us on Wednesday, May 21st, at 10:30 a.m. to learn about “Mobility in the Community”. Learn about outside walking safety on local roadways, trails, parks and crosswalks. Writing Group The Writing Group will meet on Wednesday, May 14th, at 1:00 p.m. in the Middleton Library. This month’s topic is to write about “Show and Tell”. Please write a one or two-page description of a pho- tograph or an object you wish to share with the class. Building Reminders The Middleton Senior Center has exercise equipment that you may use. However, due to the limited space and our programs, there may be times when the equipment is unavailable due to other activities. For example, when events are scheduled in the Depot room, such as the video lecture or movies, the exercise equipment may not be used. In addition, the Lower Level is locked at 4:00 p.m. for security purposes. This month join them on Thursday, May 8th, at 1:00 p.m. Caregivers, as well as listeners, are welcome to join. Nimble Fingers Nimble Fingers meets on Thursday afternoons at 12:30 p.m. The first and third Thursdays of each month are meetings to discuss their projects and administrative topics. The remaining Thursdays they work on their projects which are donated to various community organizations. Please consider sharing your talent and join this group. If you have questions, please call the Senior Center at 831-2373. Kindle Available to Borrow Dane County Library Service has loaned us a Kindle, e-Reader. It is pre-loaded with almost 100 books and you can borrow it to see if you would like one. Contact Laura at 831-2373 for more information. Sober Today Group An open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous meets every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome. Al-Anon Meeting Al-Anon is a meeting for friends and relatives of alco- holics. They meet each Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome to attend. Low Vision Support Group The Low Vision Support Group will meet on Thurs- day, May 8th, at 10:00 a.m. New members are always welcome. Middleton Jazz Every Thursday The Middleton Jazz band is continuing to play on Thursday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. Come out and enjoy the music or, if you are feeling musical, bring your instrument to join in. Reminiscing Group The Reminiscing Group meets the first and third Thursdays of each month at 10:00 a.m. They will meet on Thursday, May 1st and Thursday, May 15th, at 10:00 a.m. Gadget Guru The Gadget Guru will be available to assist you with the devices you have, but you aren’t quite sure how to work. She’s a difficult woman to deal with and her husband has finally had enough. The death of Judd Foxman’s father marks the first time that the entire Foxman clan has congregated in years. Share Your Stories About Nature We are looking for seniors to be interviewed by 4th grade students about conservation and Nature. The Friends of Pheasant Branch Conservancy and the students will be at the Senior Center on Tuesday, May 6th, at 1:00 p.m. to interview seniors about their love of nature, outdoor life experiences, the im- portance of conservation based upon the senior’s life experiences with nature and changes in the natural environment over time. Palliative Care Program Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 8th, at 12:30 p.m. We will have a program about Palliative Care by a representative from Agrace Hospice. Pal- liative Care is supportive physical and emotional care that addresses your discomfort, and stress to help you feel better and cope better. Everyone is welcome to attend to learn about this valuable care. Older Americans Month Library Display The Middleton Senior Center is highlighted at the Library this month. May is Older American’s Month, this year’s theme is “Safe Today. Healthy Tomorrow”. Stop in and see the display about us! eReader Appointments Learn to use the library’s free eBook service, Wiscon- sin’s Digital Library, at a personalized eBook training. This program is funded through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). Tomato Contest The Middleton Kiwanis Club is sponsoring our annual Tomato Contest. Pick up a plant, nurture it through the summer, then return in August with your winning tomatoes in our Tomato Contest. We encourage all participants who take plants to be part of our contest on Wednesday, August 27th. Two complimentary tomato plants to each household. You must sign up in advance by calling 831-2373. You may pick up your tomato plants after 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 20th through Thursday, May 22nd, during regular busi- ness hours. Temperature Regulations In accordance with the City of Middleton’s Sustainable City Plan dated November 2010, a policy was established for temperature controls in normally occupied spaces of all municipal build- ings. The policy goal is to maintain a reasonably comfortable, productive work environment while balancing the need to economize and use energy resources wisely. Temperatures are established based on national standards that have been found to be comfortable for most people who are dressed appropriately for the season. Heating will be to 68 degrees. Cooling will be to 78 degrees. Temperature will vary throughout the day and room to room. Participants should dress for their comfort, one suggestion is layers. ---PAGE BREAK--- 10 m a y 2 0 1 4 Driver Escorts Volunteers are needed to provide rides to Seniors for medical appointments. Schedules for driving are flexible and volunteers designate which days and time they are willing to drive. Mileage is reimbursed for drivers. Many Seniors rely on this form of trans- portation to get to vital appointments. For further information contact Sandy at 831-2373. Translators Needed We are putting together a resource list of people who speak different languages. We have many people who come to the Senior Center and would like to be matched with someone who can speak their language. If you would like to join our resource list, contact Sandy Witte at 831-2373. Treasures Wanted We are looking for collections and/or treasures to display in our new display case on the ramp behind the receptionist desk. The display is locked so your collections will be safe. You can sign up to display your items for one month starting in July. The April display is Mary Grafton’s goose, chicken and quail eggs her Mother made in the 60’s and 70’s. Farmers Market Vouchers The Middleton Senior Center has vouchers that can be used at the area Farmer’s Markets. The vouch- ers are available to seniors who are 60 and over and meet the income eligibility limits. If you are inter- ested, a representative from Dane County will be at the Senior Center Monday, June 2nd, 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. for the distribution. The 2014 income limit for a one-person household is $21,590 (gross) per year (or $1,800 a month), and a two person house- hold limit is $29,100 (gross) per year (or $2,426 a month). If you have further questions contact Jill Schonenberger or Kathy Lauer at 831-2373. 31st Annual Wisconsin Senior Games Wisconsin Senior Games offers competitive, non- competitive and social events in the Madison area. The 2014 games are May 31st - June 11th, and are for men and women 50 years and over. Competi- tive events are divided by age brackets and men’s and women’s categories. Participants can choose to enter any number of events. Team events include volleyball, basketball and softball and require team registrations.
