Consider joining one of these groups and try something new this spring. Ellen Soto will be teaching three levels of Spanish on Tuesday mornings. Conversational Spanish, Spanish for Beginners and Spanish Grammar. Marla Maeder will be leading the Poetry group on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. A small fee is associated with each class, contact the Middleton Senior Center, 831-2373, for details and to sign up. How to Avoid Scams Join us on Tuesday, March 15th, at 1:00 p.m. for a presentation by Middleton Police Officer Kim Wood. As the Community Awareness Officer, Kim will speak about how to avoid being taken advantage of, how to spot “red flags” and when to be skeptical. The Middleton Senior Center meal site is part of Dane County Human Services. Bus Schedule: The Middleton Senior Center offers a number of different transportation options to Middleton residents each week. You MUST contact the Senior Center the day before you wish to use this valuable service. Transportation to the meal site and local grocery shopping is by donation. The suggested donation is $1.00 round trip to the meal site and the suggested donation for local grocery shopping is $2.00 round trip. The fee is based upon your ability to donate. No one will be denied rides for these purposes. These times are tentative and may vary depending on the route and number of people who participate. Meals are served at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. The cost of each meal is $7.50. Home Delivered Meals (Meals on Wheels) are available for home-bound seniors Diners over age 60, please donate what you can afford. For further information contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373. Salad Alternative We offer cold salads as an alternative to the regular Tuesday meal at the dining center ONLY. March 1st Garden Salad Mixed greens with shredded lettuce, cheese, garbanzo beans, cucumbers broccoli, diced tomato and peas. Your choice of dressing. March 8th Taco Salad Lettuce, meat (beef), cheese, diced tomatoes, diced onion, salsa, sour cream and tostado chips. March 15th Chef’s Tuna Salad Shredded lettuce, flaked tuna, cheese strips, tomato wedges, sliced radishes, diced green peppers. Served with French Dressing. March 22nd Chicken Ranch Salad Mixed greens, diced chicken, crumbled bacon, cucumbers, diced tomatoes, peas, purple onion. Served with Ranch Dressing. March 29th Italian Salad Bowl Mixed greens, sliced pepperoni, feta cheese, zucchini, radishes mushrooms & diced tomatoes. Served with Italian Dressing. Yes, You Can Join Us! If you are age 55 or older, you can participate in the programs at the Middleton Senior Center. You do not have to live in the City of Middleton to join us, and there is no membership fee. There may be a residency requirement for certain services including case management services, transportation and Meals on Wheels. Bakery Items Mondays The Middleton Senior Center receives bakery items on Mondays ONLY at approximately 10:30 a.m. from Clasen’s. Scrabble Mondays Join us to play Scrabble at 9:00 a.m. on Mondays. We have several Scrabble boards; therefore, multiple games may be played. No reservations are needed you may just show up! Cribbage Players We have a Cribbage group that plays on Monday mornings at 9:30 a.m. They are always looking for additional players. We have the cribbage boards, you can just show up. Pinochle Join our Pinochle group on Mondays and Fridays at 12:30 p.m. New members are always welcome. Monday Bridge Bridge on Mondays is now open to anyone who wishes to play. Please arrive by 12:30 p.m. to begin play at 12:45 p.m. Inclement Weather Reminder In the event the Middleton-Cross Plains School District closes schools due to bad weather, the Middleton Senior Center will also be closed. Meals on Wheels will not be delivered nor will meals be served at the Middleton Senior Center. The cancelled meal will be served the next day. All classes, activities and programs are cancelled. Contact the Senior Center regarding rescheduled or make up programs. In addition, the shopping bus will not run on days when the Senior Center is closed due to the weather. ---PAGE BREAK--- 4 m a r c h 2 0 1 6 Blood Pressure Screening Blood Pressure screening is on the first Tuesday of each month at 12:30 p.m. This month it will be on Tuesday, March 1st, at 12:30 p.m. Foot Care Home Health United and the Middleton Senior Center offer foot care several times each month. The cost of Foot Care is $20.00. For an appointment contact 831-2373. Diabetic Foot Care We offer Diabetic Foot Care twice a month. The cost is $28.00 per visit. Contact the Middleton Senior Center, at 831-2373, for an appointment. Stitchers Join us on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. for knitting and crocheting in the living room. Newcomers are always welcome. Bring your projects and join this social group. Sing–Along Join us on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. for a Sing-Along with friends. Join us to sing Tuesday, March 1st and Tuesday, March 15th, at 10:00 a.m. Sheet music is provided. Mary Duckwitz and Fran Jeatran lead this group as well as accompanying on the piano. New voices welcome. BINGO BINGO is played on the last Tuesday of each month. Join us on Tuesday, March 29th, at 1:00 p.m. Come for lunch at 11:30 a.m. and stay for BINGO. Mah Jongg We have an active group of people that play Mah Jongg on Tuesday afternoons* at 12:30 p.m. If you would like to join them, just show up. If you have a Mah Jongg set, please bring it. We have all levels of players. New players are welcome. You MUST bring your own Mah Jongg card. * Please note this group does not play at the Middleton Senior Center on the last Tuesday of the month. Wood Carving Drop In We have a talented group of wood carvers that get together on Tuesday mornings 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. They bring their own projects and share with each other their creative skills and experience. Anyone is welcome to join them any time. Mending Service Mending is usually offered on the second Tuesday and Thursday of each month. This month it will be on Tuesday, March 8th and Thursday, March 10th, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Appointments are required. Our volunteers will do simple mending and hemming they will not alter clothing with linings. You are allowed to bring two items per appointment. Make your appointment by calling 831-2373. Coffee & The Economy Shannon Riley, of Edward Jones Investments, will host a program on the second Tuesday of each month, at 9:00 a.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. Join him on Tuesday, March 8th, at 9:00 a.m. for coffee, pastries and a general discussion about financial issues. This month’s topic is “The Nuts and Bolts’ Part 2 and Market Update.” Newsletter Assembly The April newsletter will be assembled on Tuesday, March 29th, at 8:30 a.m. for bulk mailing. Doors of the Senior Center will be open at 8:00 a.m. and assembly of the newsletter will begin at 8:30 a.m. Spanish Ellen Soto will teach several levels of Spanish this spring. Women Embracing Change Group A new group meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. This is a women’s only group that discusses the changes we go through as we age. Pat Ball facilitates on topics that include, physical, emotional and changes as well as a variety of other issues. Please join us on Wednesday, March 9th, at 10:30 a.m. and on Wednesday, March 23rd, at 10:30 a.m. Al-Anon Meeting Al-Anon is a meeting for friends and relatives of alcoholics. They meet each Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome to attend. Sober Today Group An open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous meets every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Essential Tremor Awareness Month March is Essential Tremor Awareness month. If you or someone you know has this diagnosis or if you would like more information about this, please feel free to join them. They meet the second Wednesday of each month. They will meet on Wednesday, March 9th, at 10:30 a.m. For information, e-mail [EMAIL REDACTED]. Hats and Tales Hats and Tales is a group of volunteers that read to preschool students with the use of hats and other props. They will meet at 10:00 a.m. at Little Red Preschool on Wednesday, March 9th. If you have a short book to read, please bring it. For additional information contact Patty at 225-4663. PG Comedy 2 Hours Reminiscing Group The Reminiscing Group meets the first and third Thursdays of each month at 10:00 a.m. They will meet on Thursday, March 3rd and March 17th, at 10:00 a.m. Join this interesting group and share your history and stories. Writing Group The Middleton Senior Center has a thriving group of writers that meet on the second Wednesday of each month. This is a group of creative seniors that write about a variety of topics in a variety of writing styles. Each month a different member decides on the topics and styles of writing. Each member brings their homework to share with the class. This month they will meet on Wednesday, March 9th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Middleton Library. This month’s writing topics are to write about someone you have taken care of, parent, friend or spouse. Would you do anything differently? What are the ways in which you wish to be cared for? Finally, what do you carry in your pockets, purse, or pack and why? New members are welcome. Low Vision Support Group Resumes The Low Vision Support Group meets on the second Thursday of each month at 10:00 a.m. This month they will resume meeting on Thursday, March 10th. Deborah Knott was expected to be a conventional little girl and eventually a conventional woman, worshipped on a pedestal by a conventional husband. The book for discussion on Wednesday, April 6th, at 10:00 a.m. will be The Three Day Affair, by Michael Kardos. Will, Jeffrey, and Nolan have been friends since their undergrad days at Princeton. Now, nine years after graduation, Will is a failed musician still reeling from the death of a bandmate. Jeffrey got lucky and then rich from the dot-com boom, and Nolan is a state senator with national aspirations. Their friendships have bent without breaking for years, until one shocking event changes everything. Books R Us Books R Us will meet on Thursday, March 24th, at 10:00 a.m. This meeting will be a “My Story” by Elizabeth Smart and Chris Stewart. For the first time, ten years after her abduction from her Salt Lake City bedroom, Elizabeth Smart reveals how she survived and the secret to forging a new life in the wake of a brutal crime. On June 5, 2002, fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Smart, the daughter of a close-knit Mormon family, was taken from her home in the middle of the night by religious fanatic, Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. She was kept chained, dressed in disguise, repeatedly raped, and told she and her family would be killed if she tried to escape. After her rescue on March 12, 2003, she rejoined her family and worked to pick up the pieces of her life. New members are always welcome. Middleton Jazz Every Thursday Middleton Jazz is a diverse group of musicians who simply love to create music. They play/practice at the Middleton Senior Center every Thursday morning, 9:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m. They play a variety of songs but specialize in New Orleans jazz. Stop by, join in or have a listen if you are in the area. Gadget Guru Our Gadget Guru is at the Middleton Senior Center on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month to assist you with your gadgets. If you need a little help, Dave will be available on Thursday, March 10th and March 24th, at 10:00 a.m. Caregiver Support Group The Middleton Senior Center offers a Caregiver Support Group that meets on the second Thursday of each month. This month join them on Thursday, March 10th, at 1:00 p.m. Caregivers, as well as listeners, are welcome to join. Nimble Fingers Nimble Fingers is a group of ladies that sew, knit and crochet for charity. We meet the first and third Thursdays of the month at 12:30 p.m. The other Thursdays are spent on sewing projects. We have an ongoing craft sale at the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome to join the group. Most of the group work on their projects at home, so you don’t have to come to every meeting. Please consider joining the group for fellowship and the rewards of charitable giving. Middleton Area Historical Society The Middleton Area Historical Society will have an information table at the Senior Center on Monday, March 21st, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Stop by to learn about Rowley House and the Museum at the Depot. You can help support the on-going story telling using artifacts, photographs and documents, by becoming a member and/or a volunteer. No need for reservations or to sign-up in advance. You may simply show up to one of their events. Join them on Thursday, March 17th, at 11:30 a.m. for a St. Patrick’s Day lunch at the Club Tavern, 1915 Branch Street, in Middleton. Then on Thursday, March 31st, at 9:15 a.m. they will plan future events for the spring months. Meet at The Pancake House, 5518 University Avenue. Please bring any ideas of events or places you would like to visit in the upcoming months. New members always welcome. Energy Assistance Do you need help with energy bills? A representative from Energy Services will be at the Middleton Senior Center on Thursday, March 17th, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Appointments are necessary. You may schedule your appointment by calling Energy Assistance directly at 267-8601. For details contact a Case Manager at the 831-2373. Greeting Card Making Class Judy Arawinko, an avid card maker, will be teaching another greeting cards class at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 11th. You will be able to let your creative side shine through with the use of special embellishments, different folding techniques and pretty papers. All supplies are furnished as well as envelopes and inserts for four cards. Cost is $10. 00, space is limited. Due to the popularity of the class, if you are unable to attend this class, (even on class day) please let us know to allow those on the waiting list to enjoy the class. Rummikub & Games on Fridays A group has started playing Rummikub on Friday mornings at 9:00 a.m. This is a tile game based on Mah Jongg and Rummy. Stop by to play Uno, Checkers, Chess or other games. Madison College Classes Madison College (formerly MATC) offers classes taught at the Middleton Senior Center. Madison College will cancel all classes that do not have 10 students registered 10 days prior to a class. It is strongly encouraged to sign up for classes as soon as you are interested. Staying healthy, active and safe take top priorities and will be the focus of our planning in the months and years to come. We heard some very clear signals about what to offer and we’re excited to begin our strategy for quality, in demand, programs. Here are the top rated survey activities: • Educational programs on financial planning, mind and memory stimulation, tablets and laptop computer training and identity theft prevention • Health and nutrition will focus on general health and cooking for 1 or 2 • Connections will look at women’s groups (check out our new “women embracing change” group already under way) • Weight management is the number one support group request • Folks would love a social event based around a coffee hour • Creativity begins with basket weaving, knitting and musical activities like karaoke and local group performances • Games should include bridge lessons for beginner and advanced, slower paced card games and card game lessons • In recreation the biggest demand from the survey is for balance exercises! • Travel near and far includes the Overture Center, Milwaukee and Chicago Thank you for helping to shape the best Middleton Senior Center possible! He is green, fast and very tiny. He may be here or he may be there. No need to dig around – he’s in the open. Find the Leprechaun on the main floor of the Senior Center on Thursday, March 17th. If you find the rascal, turn the Leprechaun into Sandy Witte,Volunteer Coordinator to receive your Pot of Gold located at the end of the rainbow. Driver Escorts Volunteers are needed to provide rides to seniors for medical appointments. The schedule is flexible and volunteers designate when they are available to drive. Mileage is reimbursed. Many seniors rely on this form of transportation to get to vital appointments. Contact Sandy, 831-2373 for information. Receptionists We need receptionists to fill in at the front desk as a substitute. We are looking for a cheerful, helpful person who understands the importance of great customer service. Friendly Visitor Looking for an individual that would like to take some time to visit and listen to an older adult in the senior’s home or meet outside of the home. Would like contact at least twice a month. Give Sandy Witte (831-2373) a call if you are interested. AARP Smart Driver Class AARP and the Middleton Senior Center are offering the Smart Driver class in April. This is a course designed to help older drivers become more aware of changes that occur due to aging (vision, hearing and reaction time) and how to adjust driving accordingly. The class will be Wednesday, April 20th, 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The cost is $15.00 for AARP members, and $20.00 for non-members. You may receive a savings on your car insurance by completing this class, check with your insurance agent. Sign up by calling at 831-2373. Tax Counseling The Middleton Senior Center is an AARP sponsored tax site. This service is designed for those with low to moderate income, catering especially to those over age 60. Tax counselors will be available to assist, complete and electronically file your taxes on Mondays and Wednesdays, through April 11th. Appointments are required and are quite full. Call 831-2373, to check availability. We are unable to assist those who are self- employed with business income that does not meet the requirements for reporting on federal Sch. C-EZ, have rental income that involves depreciation, or are married and file separately. We also reserve the right to defer tax returns that are too complex or time consuming.
