Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. and includes, pork, salads, & a roll. Musical entertainment by country music performer, Jesse Walker. He has 40 years experience in the mu- sic business; writing, performing, or recording. You will enjoy Jesse’s charm, sincerity and authentic vocal talent. For more information call 831-2373. Capone, the Cobbs and Me Rex Burwell is the author of the book Capone, the Cobbs and Me. It is a fictional story of baseball big- leaguer Mort Hart, trapped between an insane Al Capone and a vengeful Ty Cobb, must use his wits to save his skin and the skin of the woman he loves, Char- lene, Cobb’s wife. Rex will be at the Middleton Senior Center on Tuesday, August 18th, at 1:00 p.m. He will discuss the origin of the book, read an exert and answer your questions. The Middleton Senior Center meal site is part of Dane County Human Services. Bus Schedule: The Middleton Senior Center offers a number of different transportation options to Middleton resi- dents each week. You MUST contact the Senior Center the day before you wish to use this valuable service. Transportation to the meal site and local grocery shopping is by donation. The suggested donation is $1.00 round trip to the meal site and the suggested donation for local grocery shopping is $2.00 round trip. The fee is based upon your ability to donate. No one will be denied rides for these purposes. These times are tentative and may vary de- pending on the route and number of people who participate. Meals are served at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. The cost of each meal is $7.50. Home Delivered Meals (Meals on Wheels) are available for home-bound seniors Diners over age 60, please donate what you can afford. For further information contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373. Salad Alternative We offer cold salads as an alternative to the regular Tuesday meal at the dining center ONLY. August 4th Chef Salad Shredded lettuce, ham, turkey, egg, cheese and assorted fresh vegetables. Your choice of dressing. August 11th Taco Salad Lettuce, meat (beef or chicken), cheese, tomato, onions, tostado chips. Salsa, sour cream on the side. August 18th Garden Salad Mixed salad, fresh vegetables, cheese, egg, celery, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, peas, green onions. Your choice of dressing. August 25th California Cobb Salad Mixed greens, chicken, blue cheese crumbs, avocado, tomato, green onions and egg. Your choice of dressing. Bakery Items Mondays The Middleton Senior Center receives bakery items on Mondays ONLY at approximately 10:30 a.m. from Clasen’s. Vegetarian Option We offer a vegetarian option to our lunch menu. For details contact Ted at 831-2373. Foot Care Home Health United and the Middleton Senior Cen- ter offer foot care five times each month. Foot Care is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost of Foot Care is $20.00. Contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373 for an appointment. Diabetic Foot Care We have added another morning of Diabetic Foot Care to our schedule. The cost is $28.00 per visit. This service is offered twice a month at the Middle- ton Senior Center. Contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373 for an appointment Scrabble Mondays Join us to play Scrabble at 9:30 a.m. on Mondays. We have several Scrabble boards, therefore, multiple games may be played. No reservations are needed you may just show up! Cribbage Players We have a Cribbage group that plays on Monday mornings at 9:30 a.m. They are always looking for additional players. We have the cribbage boards, you can just show up. Pinochle Join our Pinochle group on Mondays and Fridays at 12:30 p.m. New members are always welcome. Yes, You Can Join Us! If you are age 55 or older, you can participate in the programs at the Middleton Senior Center. You do not have to live in the City of Middleton to join us, and there is no membership fee. There may be a residency requirement for certain services including case management services, transportation and Meals on Wheels. For additional information contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373. Senior Center Closed The Senior Center will also be closed on Monday, September 7th, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Meals on Wheels will NOT be delivered nor will meals be served at the Middleton Senior Center. All classes, activities and programs are also cancelled. Please arrive by 12:30 p.m. to begin play at 12:45 p.m. Blood Pressure Screening Blood Pressure screening is on the first Tuesday of each month at 12:30 p.m. This month it will be on Tuesday, August 4th, at 12:30 p.m. Sing–Along Join us on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. for a Sing-Along with friends. Join us to sing Tuesday, August 4th and Tuesday, August 18th, at 10:00 a.m. Sheet music is provided. Mary Duckwitz and Fran Jeatran lead this group as well as accompanying on the piano. New voices welcome. Stitchers Join us on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. for knitting and crocheting in the living room. Newcomers are always welcome. Bring your projects and join this social group. BINGO BINGO is played on the last Tuesday of each month. Join us on Tuesday, August 25th, at 1:00 p.m. Come for lunch at 11:30 a.m. and stay for BINGO. Mah Jongg We have an active group of people that play Mah Jongg on Tuesday afternoons* at 12:30 p.m. If you would like to join them, just show up. If you have a Mah Jongg set, please bring it. We have all levels of players. New players are welcome. * Please note this group does not play at the Middle- ton Senior Center on the last Tuesday of the month. Newsletter Assembly The September newsletter will be assembled on Tuesday, August 25th, at 8:30 a.m. for bulk mailing. Doors of the Senior Center will be open at 8:00 a.m. and assembly of the newsletter will begin at 8:30 a.m. Mending Service Mending is offered on the second Tuesday and Thursday of each month. Appointments are required. Our volunteers will do simple mending and hemming they will not alter clothing with linings. You are allowed to bring two items per appointment. The next mending days are Tuesday, August 11th and Thursday, August 13th, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Make your appointment by calling 831-2373. Coffee & The Economy Shannon Riley, of Edward Jones Investments, will begin hosting a program on the second Tuesday of each month, at 9:00 a.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. Join him on Tuesday, August 11th, at 9:00 a.m. for coffee, pastries and a general discussion about financial issues. This month’s topic is “Script Your Family’s Future - Why You Need an Estate Plan”. Al-Anon Meeting Al-Anon is a meeting for friends and relatives of alco- holics. They meet each Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome to attend. Sober Today Group An open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous meets every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome. Essential Tremor Support Group The Essential Tremor Support Group meets on the second Wednesday of each month. They will meet on Wednesday, August 12th, at 10:30 a.m. Anyone is welcome to attend. WiFi Available at Senior Center You may use free WiFi while visiting the Middleton Senior Center. It should connect automatically when you open a browser on your phone, laptop or other device. If not, contact a staff member for assistance. They will meet at the Middleton Library on Wednesday, August 12th, at 1:00 p.m. Please bring one of the following to the meeting this month. Write a review or synopsis of three or four books you have read this year; or How many of the proverbial “9 Lives” have you used up? or take a real happening in your life, and write a fictional account of it going off in another direction. New members welcome. Social Seniors Social Seniors will meet on Wednesday, August 5th, at 9:00 a.m. at the Copper Top res- taurant, 5501 Schroeder Road, Madison, for breakfast, coffee and planning. On Tuesday, August 18th, at 9:00 a.m. meet at the Middleton Senior Center to car pool to Pope Farms to see their amazing sunflowers. Then, on Wednesday, August 26th, meet at noon at the China Wok , 6913 University Avenue, Middle- ton, for lunch. Reminiscing Group The Reminiscing Group meets the first and third Thursdays of each month at 10:00 a.m. They will meet on Thursday, August 6th and Thursday, August 20th, at 10:00 a.m. Join this interesting group and share your history and stories. Low Vision Support Group The Low Vision Support Group meets on the second Thursday of each month. This month they will meet at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 13th. Jean Kalscheaur, from the Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired, will speak about the latest treatments and share additional information about age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. August Movie “McFarland, USA” Join us on Friday, August 14th, at 12:30 p.m. to watch the movie “McFarland, USA”. True Story about Track coach Jim White who is a newcomer to a predominantly Latino high-school in California’s Central Valley. Coach White and his new students find that they have much to learn about one another, but things begin to change when White realizes the boys’ exceptional running ability. Gadget Guru Our Gadget Guru is at the Middleton Senior Center on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month to assist you with your gadgets. If you need a little help, Dave will be available on Thursday, August 6th and Thursday, August 20th, at 10:00 a.m. Caregiver Support Group The Middleton Senior Center offers a Caregiver Sup- port Group that meets on the second Thursday of each month. Other than the bullet lodged near his heart, former Detroit cop Alex McKnight thought he had put the nightmare of his partner’s death and his own near-fatal injury behind him. After all, the man convicted of the crimes has been locked away for years. But in the small town of Paradise, Michigan, where McKnight has traded his badge for a cabin in the woods, a murderer with the same unmistakable trademarks appears to be back. The book for Wednesday, September 2nd, at 10:00 a.m. is Old World Mystery, by Kathleen Earnst. Chloe Ellefson is making a fresh start as the new col- lections curator at Old World Wisconsin, an outdoor ethnic museum showcasing 1870s settlement life. On her first day, Chloe meets with an elderly woman who begs her to find a priceless eighteenth-century Norwegian ale bowl that had been donated to the museum years ago. But before Chloe can find the heirloom and return it to her, the woman dies in a suspicious car crash. Digging up the history and whereabouts of the rare artifact quickly turns dangerous. Chloe discovers that someone is desperately trying to cover up all traces of the bowl’s existence—by any means necessary. Each person will bring in a book they’ve read to share with the group by doing a short presentation about the book. New members are always welcome. Coloring for Grown-ups Coloring as an adult can help relieve stress. The Middleton Senior Center has a selection of coloring books and colored pencils for your use in our living room. The first and third Thursdays of each month are meetings to discuss their projects and administrative topics. The remaining Thursdays they work on their projects which are donated to various community organiza- tions. Please consider sharing your time and talent. Rummikub & Games on Fridays A group has started playing Rummikub on Friday mornings at 9:00 a.m. This is a tile game based on Mah Jongg and Rummy. Stop by to play Uno, Checkers, Chess or other games. Mah Jongg Instruction Mah Jongg lessons will be offered on Tuesdays from 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. August 4th - August 18th, at the Middleton Senior Center. If you have always wanted to learn, or need a refresher class come join this group. No cost, but space is lim- ited, call 831-2373, to sign up. Greeting Card Making Class Judy Arawinko, an avid card maker, will be teaching an autumnal theme greeting cards class on Friday, August 7th, at 1:00 p.m. You will be able to let your creative side shine through with the use of special embellishments, different folding techniques and pretty papers. All supplies are furnished as well as envelopes and inserts for four cards. Cost is $10. 00, Space is limited. If the class isfull, please put your name on the waiting list, in the event that we are able add another class. Madison Metro Transportation Program Mick Rusch, is a representative from Madison Metro Transit. He will be at the Senior Center on Wednesday, August 19th, at 12:30 p.m. to dis- cuss an overview of the transportation system, how to navigate the schedules, the options for riding the bus, as well as answer your questions. Lecture Series Palliative Care and End of Life Issues Join us for a four part lecture series in August on Monday Mornings at 10:15 a.m. It is a continua- tion of the Being Mortal class. Anyone is welcome to attend these presentations. Monday, August 3rd - Jill Schonenberger, Case Manager at the Middleton Senior Center, will present about the resources, services and options available to you through the Senior Center and in the com- munity. Monday, August 10th - We will show the PBS pre- sentation of Frontline, Being Mortal. Monday, August 17th - Palliative Care and Hospice, by Jennifer Tiedemann of Agrace Hospice. Monday, August 24th - Dr. Jim Cleary, Director of Palliative Medicine at the UW Hospital and Clinics. He will discuss the book Being Mortal and speak from the physicians side about palliative care. Poetry and Pastries Join us on Tuesday, August 25th, at 10:00 a.m. for a poetry reading by our own poetry group. They have been meeting for several months and now our new poets will show off their talents and read some of their best poetry. They may make you laugh or cry and are sure to bring a smile to your face. You may even find your inner poet and decide to join them! Refreshments will be served. Please sign up by calling 831-2373. Location and Timing is Everything The Middleton Senior Center schedules 90+ programs, activities and events every week. Most are listed in the calendar, but not neces- sarily all of them. We carefully consider locations and timing when scheduling each activity. Remember that your activity is not the only program at the Middleton Senior Center. Please be considerate of other groups when attending programs. The room your activity is in may be in use before or after your event. If you arrive early or wish to stay later, please utilize one of the common areas or comfortable living rooms during these times. The Senior Center reserves the right to relocate, postpone or cancel any program to accommodate other special events or programs. It utilizes Tai Chi and Qi Gong principles, and can be tailored to individual levels. All fitness levels are encouraged to join. Display Case Exhibitors The Middleton Senior Center has a small display case behind the front desk. We have been able to exhibit some of our senior’s small collections in this Mini- Museum. Volunteer Appreciation Event Save the Date Thursday, September 24th, 2015 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Invitations will be mailed the end of August. Driver Escorts Volunteers are needed to provide rides to seniors for medical appointments. The schedule is flexible and volunteers designate when they are available to drive. Mileage is reimbursed. Many seniors rely on this form of transportation to get to vital appoint- ments. Contact Sandy Witte at 831-2373 for more information. Receptionists We need receptionists to fill in at the front desk as substitutes. We are looking for a cheerful, helpful people who understand the importance of great cus- tomer service. If you are interested in this volunteer opportunity, contact Sandy Witte at 831-2373. Building Reminders The Middleton Senior Center has exercise equipment that you may use. However, due to the limited space and our programs, there may be times when the equipment is unavailable due to other activities. For example, when events are scheduled in the Depot room, such as the video lecture or movies, the exercise equipment may not be used. In addition, the Lower Level is locked at 4:00 p.m. for security purposes. Therefore, all programs and equipment use must be completed by 4:00 p.m. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.
