The Middleton Senior Center meal site is part of Dane County Human Services. Bus Schedule: The Middleton Senior Center offers a number of different transportation options to Middleton residents each week. You MUST contact the Senior Center the day before you wish to use this valuable service. Transportation to the meal site and local grocery shopping is by donation. The suggested donation is $1.00 round trip to the meal site and the suggested donation for local grocery shopping is $2.00 round trip. The fee is based upon your ability to donate. No one will be denied rides for these purposes. These times are tentative and may vary depending on the route and number of people who participate. Meals are served at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. The cost of each meal is $7.50. Home Delivered Meals (Meals on Wheels) are available for home-bound seniors Diners over age 60, please donate what you can afford. For further information contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373. Salad Alternative We offer cold salads as an alternative to the regular Tuesday meal at the dining center ONLY. September 6th Garden Salad Mixed greens with shredded lettuce, cheese, garbanzo beans, cucumbers, broccoli, diced tomato and peas. Your choice of dressing. September 13th Taco Salad Lettuce, meat (beef), cheese, diced tomatoes, diced onion, salsa, sour cream and tostado chips. September 20th Chef Salad Shredded lettuce, ham, turkey, cheese, tomato wedges, shredded carrots, radishes, diced cucumbers. Your choice of dressing. September 27th Chicken Ranch Salad Mixed greens, diced chicken, crumbled bacon, cucumbers, diced tomatoes, peas, purple onion. Served with Ranch Dressing. Bakery Items Mondays The Middleton Senior Center receives bakery items on Mondays ONLY at approximately 10:30 a.m. from Clasen’s. Scrabble Mondays Join us to play Scrabble at 9:00 a.m. on Mondays. We have several Scrabble boards; therefore, multiple games may be played. No reservations are needed you may just show up! Cribbage Players We have a Cribbage group that plays on Monday mornings at 9:30 a.m. They are always looking for additional players. We have the cribbage boards, you can just show up. Open Cards Open Cards is for people that have a group of people who play cards together, however, they need a location to play. You may come to the Middleton Senior Center with your group on Thursdays and Fridays at 12:30 p.m. Please check at the front desk for an available location. Foot Care Home Health United and the Middleton Senior Center offer foot care several times each month. The cost of Foot Care is $20.00. For an appointment contact 831-2373. Diabetic Foot Care We offer Diabetic Foot Care twice a month. The cost is $28.00 per visit. Contact the Middleton Senior Center, at 831-2373, for an appointment. Senior Center Closed The Senior Center will also be closed on Monday, September 5th, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Meals on Wheels will NOT be delivered nor will meals be served at the Middleton Senior Center. All classes, activities and programs are also cancelled. Contact a Case Manager should you need additional assistance. Dining Center Information All menu items are prepared in kitchens that are not allergen-free. We cannot guarantee that food allergens will not be transferred through cross- contact. No substitutions allowed. Please arrive by 12:30 p.m. to begin play at 12:45 p.m. Wii Sports The Middleton Senior Center has a Wii Video Gaming system. Participants play the games, primarily bowling, but other games as well, on Mondays at 12:30 p.m. No need to sign up, just show up. Blood Pressure Screening Blood Pressure screening takes place on the first Tuesday of each month at 12:30 p.m. This month it will be on Tuesday, September 6th, at 12:30 p.m. Sing–Along Join us on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. for a Sing-Along with friends. Singing takes place on Tuesday, September 6th and Tuesday, September 20th, at 10:00 a.m. Sheet music is provided. Mary Duckwitz and Fran Jeatran lead this group as well as accompanying on the piano. New voices welcome. Wood Carving Drop In We have a talented group of wood carvers that get together on Tuesday mornings 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. They bring their own projects and share with each other their creative skills and experience. Anyone is welcome to join them any time. Mah Jongg We have an active group of people that play Mah Jongg on Tuesday afternoons* at 12:30 p.m. If you would like to join them, just show up. If you have a Mah Jongg set, please bring it. We have all levels of players. New players are welcome. You MUST bring your own Mah Jongg card. * Please note this group does not play at the Middleton Senior Center on the last Tuesday of the month. Stitchers Join us on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. for knitting and crocheting in the living room. Newcomers are always welcome. Bring your projects and join this social group. Spanish You can boost your brain power at any age and learning Spanish can do this. Ellen Soto teaches at several levels. This is a low stress group that accepts new members at any point. You may improve your mental health, by meeting new friends, learning something new and having fun. A new section begins each month and runs for four weeks, September classes begin on September 6th and will be on Tuesday mornings. 9:00 a.m. Conversational Spanish 10:00 a.m. Spanish for Short Sentences 11:00 a.m. Spanish Grammar A beginners Spanish will start on Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m. Cost for each class is just $5.00 for the four-week class. Coffee & The Economy Shannon Riley, of Edward Jones Investments, will host a program on the second Tuesday of each month, at 9:00 a.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. Join him on Tuesday, September 13th, at 9:00 a.m. for coffee, pastries and a general discussion about financial issues. This month’s topic is “Ready or Not? Preparing for the Unexpected” and a market update. Yes, You Can Join Us! If you are age 55 or older, you can participate in the programs at the Middleton Senior Center. You do not have to live in the City of Middleton to join us, and there is no membership fee. There may be a residency requirement for certain services including case management services, transportation and Meals on Wheels. Join us on Tuesday, September 27th, at 1:00 p.m. Come for lunch at 11:30 a.m. and stay for BINGO. Al-Anon Meeting Al-Anon is a meeting for friends and relatives of alcoholics. They meet each Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome to attend. Sober Today Group An open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous meets every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Essential Tremor/Dystonia Support Group This group meets on the second Wednesday of each month. They will meet at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 14th. This month’s will be a regular meeting. September Movie “The Lady in the Van” Join us for an afternoon movie on Friday, September 9th, at 12:30 p.m. to watch “The Lady in the Van”. Based on a true story of Miss Shepherd (Maggie Smith), a woman of uncertain origins “temporarily” parks her van in Alan Bennett’s London driveway and proceeds to live there for 15 years. What begins as a grudging favor becomes a relationship that will change both their lives. Starring: Maggie Smith, Alex Jennings and Jim Broadbent. PG: 13 1 Hour 24 Minutes Mystery Book Club The Mystery Book Club will meet on Wednesday, September 7th, at 10:00 to discuss the book When the Bough Breaks, by Jonathan Kellerman. In the first Alex Delaware novel, Dr. Morton Handler practiced a strange brand of Among his specialties were fraud, extortion, and sexual manipulation. Handler paid for his sins when he was brutally murdered in his luxurious Pacific Palisades apartment. The police have no leads, but they do have one possible witness: seven-year-old Melody Quinn. The book for Wednesday, October 5th, is A Trouble of Fools, by Linda Barnes. It’s the kind of case that has “NO!” written all over it. But ex-cop Carlotta Carlyle has a Private Investigator license getting moldy from disuse, so she takes on the search for a little old lady’s missing brother. After all, how much trouble could an aging cabbie get into? Plenty, Carlotta learns, as she uncovers a scam of laundered money and drug running, all mixed together in that dangerously powerful brew known as Boston-Irish politics. This women only group meets to discuss the changes we go through as we age. Pat Ball facilitates on topics that include, physical, emotional and changes as well as a variety of other issues. Please join us on Wednesday, September 14th, at 10:30 a.m. and on Wednesday, September 28th, at 10:30 a.m. Writing Group The Middleton Senior Center has a thriving group of writers that meets on the second Wednesday of each month. This month they will meet on Wednesday, September 14th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Middleton Library. This is a group of creative seniors that write about a variety of topics in a variety of writing styles. Each month a different member decides on the topics and styles of writing. Participants bring their homework to share with the class. Choose one of the following to write about: 1. Write about something in your life that you wish you had done, and why you didn’t do it? 2. What is your favorite piece of music and why? 3. Write about your mother/father or both. Euchre Join us for Euchre on Wednesday afternoons at 1:00 p.m. Anyone is welcome to join. Middleton Jazz Every Thursday Middleton Jazz is a diverse group of musicians who simply love to create music. They play/practice at the Middleton Senior Center every Thursday morning, 9:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m. They play a variety of songs but specialize in New Orleans jazz. Stop by, join in or have a listen if you are in the area. Reminiscing Group The Reminiscing Group meets the first and third Thursdays of each month at 10:00 a.m. They will meet on Thursday, September 1st and Thursday, September 15th, at 10:00 a.m. Join this interesting group and share your history and stories. Books R Us Books R Us meets on the fourth Thursday of each month. This month they will meet on Thursday, September 22nd, at 10:00 a.m. to discuss A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute. Jean Paget was born in Malaya, in 1921. At that time Malaya was ruled by the British and many people from Britain lived and worked in Malaya. The most important industries were mining tin and growing rubber. Jean Paget’s father was the manager of a large rubber estate. Mr Paget lived on the rubber estate with his wife and family. There were two children. At first, Mrs Paget taught the children herself. But when Donald was thirteen, he had to go to school in England. Jean was only ten at that time, but she went back to England as well. The two children went to stay with their grandparents near Southampton, a large town about eighty miles from London. Gadget Guru Our Gadget Guru is at the Middleton Senior Center on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month to assist you with your gadgets. If you need a little help, Dave will be available at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 8th and Thursday, September 22nd. Caregiver Support Group The Middleton Senior Center offers a Caregiver Support Group that meets on the second Thursday of each month. This month join them on Thursday, September 8th, at 1:00 p.m. Caregivers, as well as listeners, are welcome to join. Nimble Fingers Nimble Fingers is a group of ladies that sew, knit and crochet for charity. They meet the first and third Thursdays of the month at 12:30 p.m. The other Thursdays are spent on sewing projects. We have an ongoing craft sale at the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome to join the group on any Thursday afternoon. New members welcome. Strength & Flexibility Classes Strength & Flexibility is a movement class that includes some work on yoga mats and other exercise elements. It utilizes Tai Chi and Qi Gong principles, and can be tailored to individual levels. All fitness levels are encouraged to join. Wednesdays, 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. September 7th - October 26th (8 weeks) And/Or Fridays, 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. September 9th - October 28th (8 weeks) The cost is $55.00 for one class or $90.00 for both. Contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373. Social Seniors Social Seniors is a group that gets together to partake in activities throughout the community. No need for reservations or to sign-up in advance. You may simply show up to one of their events. Join them on Wednesday, September 7th, at 9:15 a.m. at Hy-Vee, 675 S Whitney Way, for breakfast and planning. Then on Tuesday, September 13th, at 9:30 a.m. meet at the Middleton Senior Center to carpool to the Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac and lunch at Blue Spoon in Prairie du Sac. Finally, join them on Friday, September 30th, at 4:30 p.m. at the Senior Center, to carpool to The Shack Bar & Grill in Black Earth. Voted Best Fish Fry by Madison Magazine’s Best of the ‘Burbs. Everyone is welcome to join. They will be attending the Capital Chordsman concert at the Middleton Performing Arts Center on Saturday, October 1st, at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $10.00, General Admission and available at the day of show at the Performing Arts Center. Meet in the PAC lobby at 1:45 p.m. ---PAGE BREAK--- 10 S e p t e m b e r 2 0 1 6 TOPS Interest The Middleton Senior Center is starting a TOPS program. They will meet on Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m. beginning September 1st. Taking Pounds Off Sensibly (TOPS) is a weight loss program based on members helping and supporting each other. It focuses on making small, steady lifestyle changes that provide lasting weight loss and better health. Yearly membership is $32.00. They meet once a week for a short business meeting, a weigh-in and a topic of discussion. Meetings are one hour. At no time are individual weights ever discussed during the meeting. Knitting Workshop for Everyone We are offering a knitting workshop with Doreen Forcier on Thursday afternoon. This class is for knitters of all levels. The first meeting will be Wednesday, September 21st, at 10:00 a.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. This group is open to all ages. This program is in partnership with St. Luke’s Lutheran Church and the West Madison Senior Coalition. AARP Smart Driver Class AARP and the Middleton Senior Center are offering the Smart Driver class. This is a course designed to help older drivers become more aware of changes that occur due to aging (vision, hearing and reaction time) and how to adjust driving accordingly. The class will be Friday, September 30th, 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The cost is $15.00 for AARP members, and $20.00 for non-members. Medicare Part D Open Enrollment Medicare Part D is the federal prescription drug benefit for Medicare beneficiaries. It is IMPORTANT that everyone reviews their policy each year - as changes are made to each plan each year. All Medicare beneficiaries have the option to make enrollment changes in their prescription drug plans from October 15th – December 7th, 2016. Opening available for the 1st Thursday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. You will not be cutting any nails but will be taking money, getting towels and drawing water. If you are interested, contact Sandy, Volunteer Coordinator, at 831-2373 Driver Escorts Volunteers are needed to provide rides to seniors for medical appointments. The schedule is flexible and volunteers designate when they are available to drive. Mileage is reimbursed. Many seniors rely on this form of transportation to get to vital appointments. For details contact Laura at 831-2373, Bridge Lessons Bidding in the 21st Century (The Club Series) Phil Klein will be teaching Bridge this fall at the Middleton Senior Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays, September 20th - October 20th, (no class October 11 & 13th) at 12:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. This course focuses on introducing the student to the basic concepts of the game. There is an emphasis on modern bidding language and concepts (opening bids, responses, rebids, overcalls, takeout doubles and Stayman conventions) but sufficient elements of play and defense are introduced to allow the students to start playing hands right away. End-of-Life Preparedness Workshop This is a workshop based on a 258 page workbook guide that will give you checklists and worksheets to help you become organized about end of life topics. This two week workshop will present you with speakers that will include an attorney, a representative from the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) and someone discussing funeral trusts.
