Business Park (please approach Nursery Dr. from Deming way) Donate to St. Vincent de Paul, Middleton Kiwanis and other local charities: Clothing, furniture, and household items in clean, working condition; cell phones, durable medical equipment, eyeglasses, books, printer cartridges, cell phones, iPods, and digital cameras. Recycle safely for the environment and at NO COST to you: CFLs (no tubes), batteries (for a free-will donation of computers, laptops, tablets/ iPads, servers, printers, computer parts, cables, wire, adaptors, and chargers, LCD (thin flat panel) computer monitors, UPS units, stereo equipment, VCRs, DVD players, smoke detec- tors, carbon monoxide detectors, household electronics and appliances (e.g. refrigerators, microwaves, vacuums, cable and satellite boxes, etc.), scrap metal, gas-powered lawn mow- ers (must be emptied of gas and oil). Audio & Video tapes will not be accepted. Please note, no other types of paint will be accepted. NEW: Styrofoam Recycling by Uniek: Clean #6 Styrofoam (block packaging ma- terial like that used to protect TVs, electronics, etc. Also washed cup and food packaging. NOT ACCEPTED: packing peanuts, foam insulation board, #6 Styrofoam with food still in it, #4 polyethylene sheets or packaging (can be recognized because it does not break easily and does not break into small pieces.) Christmas Tree Disposal The City will collect & chip Christmas trees during the months of January & Febru- ary on an as-needed basis. All tinsel, decorations, lights, tree stands, etc. must be removed. Trees placed in plastic bags or buried in snow banks will not be collected. WEEKLY RECYCLING COMING OCTOBER 1 Pellitteri and the City recently agreed to a contract amendment that includes collecting recyclable materials placed in blue bins WEEKLY instead of bi-weekly. The contract amendment will not only increase the frequency of recyclable collections to match refuse collections, but will also lower costs. It is hoped that this change will result in more recyclable materials being placed in the blue bins for recovery. Reusable Grocery/Shopping Bags You can help the environment by reusing cloth or plastic shopping bags, but just how clean are they? Lab tests found fecal coliforms and bacteria on reusable bags which could lead to illness. “The solution? Wash the bags routinely to kill the bacteria and wrap meat and produce in plastic bags before placing them in your shopping bags. ---PAGE BREAK--- Page 2 Building Permits Residents must obtain permits from the Building Inspector for construction and remodeling projects with a cost estimate over $1,000. Any project that includes improving, altering, converting, repairing, extending or demolishing of a building or structure requires a building permit. Permits are also required for land disturbing, erosion control, storm water, plumbing, heating, electrical, and signs, both temporary and permanent. Signs include banners, flags, balloons, and sandwich boards. Permit applications are available at City Hall and on our website. Permits must be obtained before construction begins. Please allow two weeks for processing permit applications. A penalty will be applied for projects started without a proper permit. If you have any questions relating to obtaining a permit, please call the City of Middleton Building Inspection Department at 821-8370. Sidewalk Obstructions Obstructions in need of edging or trimming include:  Vegetation (trees & bushes) hanging over the side- walk, within a height of 10’ above the sidewalk.  Grass & weeds that are narrowing the effective side- walk width. The useable width of sidewalks needs to be maintained at a minimum of 48”.  Sidewalk obstructions other than from City terrace trees must be removed by the adjacent property owner. Property Information For property information, go to the the City web site: cityofmiddleton.us WINTER PARKING NOVEMBER 15- MARCH 15 Cold weather and snow will soon be upon us. City Ordinances require alternate side parking during the winter season, regardless of snowfall. Between the hours of 1:00 am and 7:00 am, all vehicles parked on the street must be on the even numbered side on even numbered days, and on the odd numbered side on odd numbered days. Alternate side parking is not applicable on streets with parking limited to one side. SNOW REMOVAL The Middleton Common Council adopted the following ordinance at a regular meeting held on August 21, 2007. “The owner, occu- pant or person in charge of each building, structure or unoccupied lot in the City fronting or abutting a street shall remove snow and ice from the sidewalk, including handicap ramps adjacent to such building, structure or unoccupied lot as well as from any fire hydrant upon or directly adjacent to the prop- erty to a point no higher than four inches below the lowest nozzle. The snow and/or ice must be removed from the entire width of the sidewalk and handicap ramps and from fire hydrants within 24 hours following the end of the snowfall. If ice cannot be removed immediately, it shall be sprinkled with salt, sand or com- bination thereof until it can be removed”. You can also help by shoveling out your mail box and areas for your trash cans and recycling bins. It is unlawful for resident to plow snow, shovel or throw snow into the street. Recycle Your Holiday Lights! No trash or large items outside of trash carts will be picked up unless prior arrangements have been made. Recycle items may be placed in clear plastic bags for pickup. Page 3 Water Utility The Water Utility will continue to perform meter testing and cross connection inspections. With the assistance of Hydro Designs Inc., some residents will be receiving information on how to sign up to have this work performed at no cost. Disposing of Household Hazardous Items Dane County Clean Sweep accepts many household hazard- ous items, including paint. Med Drop A 24 hour drop box available in the lobby of the Middle- ton Police Dept, 7341 Donna Dr. Please empty pills into plastic sealed bags & recycle the pill bottles at home. If you are dropping off liquids or creams, they may remain in the original container, but placed in a sealed bag to avoid spillage. If you choose to use the recycling container next to the MedDrop for pill bottles, it is incumbent on the MedDrop user to remove labels & indentifying information to protect their privacy. For more information, please visit the City’s website at www.middletonpd.com/meddrop.htm Winter Garbage & Recycling Cart Placement With winter weather approaching, it’s time to plan for the placement of garbage and recycling carts during the next few months. While many residents can continue to set their carts in their driveway apron, some will want instead to clear snow from the terrace next to the driveway to make carts accessible for the collection trucks. This will be easiest if begun with the first snow fall. When planning for you cart placement, please remember:  Place carts with at least 4 feet of clearance on the sides so mechanical arms can get to them.  Do not place carts on a snow bank or more than 2 feet behind the curb, or the mechanical arm may not be able to reach them.  DO NOT PLACE CARTS IN THE STREET, as that presents a hazard to drivers and bicyclists and interferes with parking, storm drainage, snow plowing and street sweeping. Please also remember that if severe weather prohibits trash and recycling collection, the pick-up day will be delayed by one day for all residential pick-ups during the rest of that week. ---PAGE BREAK--- Brush Collection Schedule Background Information: Curbside collection of brush will be provided once a month from April through October. Special collections may be made in response to storm events. Please see the recently updated Brush Collection Policy for a complete description of rules and an alternative to curbside collection. Brush Collection Rules:  Limbs or branches must not exceed 6” in diameter.  Place brush in an orderly fashion parallel to the curb, with all cut ends pointing to the right as you face the street. Avoid conflicts with trees, poles, hydrants, mailboxes, parked cars, and other obstructions.  Remove all metal, roots and dirt.  Keep brush segregated from garbage, leaves and yard waste.  Brush trimmed by contractors WILL NOT be collected.  Brush mixed with leaves WILL NOT be collected. If Monday is a holiday, place brush at curb by 7:00 am Tuesday. Fall Leaf Collection Fall leaf collection will begin in October and continue through November, weather per- mitting. Collection will end following the season’s first snow accumulation, but no later than the end of November. Please see our recently updated Leaf and Yard Waste Collection Policy for a complete description of rules and alternative options, and check the City web site for weekly progress updates. Leaf Collection Rules:  Pile leaves on grass areas along the curb, but not in the street or gutter.  Do not pile leaves around trees, posts, hydrants, mailboxes, rocks, firewood or brush.  Leaves in bags or containers WILL NOT be collected.  Leaves mixed with brush WILL NOT be collected.
