Approximately 50% of older adults suffer from sleep issues. There are many reasons for poor sleeping patterns and sleep disturbances. Janet Bollig, of Home Health United, will speak about the importance of sleep. Bus Schedule: The Middleton Senior Center offers a number of different transportation options to Middleton residents each week. You MUST contact the Senior Center the day before you wish to use this valuable service. Transportation to the meal site and local grocery shopping is by donation. The suggested donation is $1.00 round trip to the meal site and the suggested donation for local grocery shopping is $2.00 round trip. The fee is based upon your ability to donate. No one will be denied rides for these purposes. These times are tentative and may vary depending on the route and number of people who participate. May 10th Taco Salad Lettuce, meat (beef), cheese, diced tomatoes, diced onion, salsa, sour cream and tostado chips. May 17th Chef’s Tuna Salad Shredded lettuce, flaked tuna, cheese strips, tomato wedges, sliced radishes, diced green peppers. Served with French Dressing. If you are age 55 or older, you can participate in the programs at the Middleton Senior Center. You do not have to live in the City of Middleton to join us, and there is no membership fee. There may be a residency requirement for certain services including case management services, transportation and Meals on Wheels. Bakery Items Mondays The Middleton Senior Center receives bakery items on Mondays ONLY at approximately 10:30 a.m. from Clasen’s . Scrabble Mondays Join us to play Scrabble at 9:00 a.m. on Mondays. We have several Scrabble boards; therefore, multiple games may be played. No reservations are needed you may just show up! Cribbage Players We have a Cribbage group that plays on Monday mornings at 9:30 a.m. They are always looking for additional players. We have the cribbage boards, you can just show up. Pinochle Join our Pinochle group on Mondays and Fridays at 12:30 p.m. New members are always welcome. Middleton Senior Center Closed The Middleton Senior Center will be closed on Friday, May 20th, for cleaning. No classes, activities, programs or lunch will take place in the building. Meals on Wheels WILL be delivered. Contact Ted Quincey, 831-2373 for information. The Senior Center will also be closed on Monday, May 30th, in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. Meals on Wheels will NOT be delivered nor will meals be served at the Middleton Senior Center. All classes, activities and programs are also cancelled. Please arrive by 12:30 p.m. to begin play at 12:45 p.m. Blood Pressure Screening Blood Pressure screening is on the first Tuesday of each month at 12:30 p.m. This month it will be on Tuesday, May 3rd, at 12:30 p.m. Stitchers Join us on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. for knitting and crocheting in the living room. Newcomers are always welcome. Bring your projects and join this social group. Sing–Along Join us on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. for a Sing-Along with friends. Join us to sing Tuesday, May 3rd and Tuesday, May 17th, at 10:00 a.m. Sheet music is provided. Mary Duckwitz and Fran Jeatran lead this group as well as accompanying on the piano. New voices welcome. Mah Jongg We have an active group of people that play Mah Jongg on Tuesday afternoons* at 12:30 p.m. If you would like to join them, just show up. If you have a Mah Jongg set, please bring it. We have all levels of players. New players are welcome. You MUST bring your own Mah Jongg card. * Please note this group does not play at the Middleton Senior Center on the last Tuesday of the month. Spanish Ellen Soto will teach several levels of Spanish this spring. A new section will begin at the beginning of each month and run for four weeks, May 3rd - May 24th. All classes will be on Tuesday mornings. 9:00 a.m. Conversational Spanish 10:00 a.m. Spanish for Beginners 11:00 a.m. Spanish Grammar Cost is just $5.00 for the four-week class. Wood Carving Drop In We have a talented group of wood carvers that get together on Tuesday mornings 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. They bring their own projects and share with each other their creative skills and experience. Anyone is welcome to join them any time. Coffee & The Economy Shannon Riley, of Edward Jones Investments, will host a program on the second Tuesday of each month, at 9:00 a.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. Join him on Tuesday, May 10th, at 9:00 a.m. for coffee, pastries and a general discussion about financial issues. This month’s topic is “Investment Strategy and Market Outlook”. Mending Service Mending is usually offered on the second Tuesday and Thursday of each month. This month it will be on Tuesday, May 10th, and Thursday, May 12th, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Appointments are required. Our volunteers will do simple mending and hemming they will not alter clothing with linings. You are allowed to bring two items per appointment. Make your appointment by calling 831-2373. Poetry Class for Everyone Exercise your mind and stretch your creative muscles in a poetry class led by writer/poet Marla Maeder. The Poetry group meets on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. Turn your feelings, memories and observations into free verse, rhyme or haiku, anything goes. Women Embracing Change Group This amazing group of women meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. This women only group meets to discuss the changes we go through as we age. Pat Ball facilitates on topics that include, physical, emotional and changes as well as a variety of other issues. Please join us on Wednesday, May 11th, at 10:30 a.m. and on Wednesday, May 25th, at 10:30 a.m. Sober Today Group An open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous meets every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Al-Anon Meeting Al-Anon is a meeting for friends and relatives of alcoholics. They meet each Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome to attend. Essential Tremor Awareness Month This group meets on the second Wednesday of each month. They will meet on Wednesday, May 11th, at 10:30 a.m. This will be a regular meeting. Reminiscing Group The Reminiscing Group meets the first and third Thursdays of each month at 10:00 a.m. They will meet on Thursday, May 5th, and May 19th, at 10:00 a.m. Join this interesting group and share your history and stories. May Movie “The Hundred Foot Journey” Join us for an afternoon movie on Friday, May 13th, at 12:30 p.m. to watch “The Hundred Foot Journey”. When the chilly chef proprietress of Michelin-starred French restaurant in southern France gets wind of a culinary immigrant opening an Indian restaurant just 100 feet from her own, her icy protests escalates to all-out war between the two establishments. It’s a celebration of triumph over exile as these two worlds collide and one young man tries to find the comfort of home in every pot – wherever he may be. PG 122 minutes Hats and Tales Hats and Tales is a group of volunteers that read to preschool students with the use of hats and other props. Writing Group The Middleton Senior Center has a thriving group of writers that meet on the second Wednesday of each month. This is a group of creative seniors that write about a variety of topics in a variety of writing styles. Each month a different member decides on the topics and styles of writing. Each member brings their homework to share with the class. This month they will meet on Wednesday, May 11th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Middleton Library. This month’s writing topic is to write about If you could look into the future 40 years, what change would you most like to see? Or write about an observation you recently made or share your ideas for staying focused on living well each day. They play/practice at the Middleton Senior Center every Thursday morning, 9:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m. They play a variety of songs but specialize in New Orleans jazz. Stop by, join in or have a listen if you are in the area. No Middleton Jazz on Thursday, May 19th. Mystery Book Club The Mystery book club will meet on Wednesday, May 4th, at 10:00 a.m. to discuss The Alibi by Sandra Brown. Assistant DA Hammond Cross has his sights set on the DA’s office. Prosecuting a high- profile murder case practically ensures him the job. But a Saturday night encounter with a mysterious woman is the start of a living nightmare. A perfumed grafter named Joel Cairo, a fat man name Gutman, and Brigid O’Shaughnessy, a beautiful and treacherous woman whose loyalties shift at the drop of a dime. These are the ingredients of Dashiell Hammett’s coolly glittering gem of detective fiction, a novel that has haunted three generations of readers. New members are always welcome. Low Vision Support Group The Low Vision Support Group meets on the second Thursday of each month at 10:00 a.m. This month they will meet on Thursday, May 12th. Brad Subera, is the Community Education Specialist with the Middleton Fire Department. He will discuss fire safety tips for those with low vision. New members are welcome. Gadget Guru Our Gadget Guru is at the Middleton Senior Center on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month to assist you with your gadgets. If you need a little help, Dave will be available on Thursday, May 12th, and May 26th, at 10:00 a.m. Caregiver Support Group The Middleton Senior Center offers a Caregiver Support Group that meets on the second Thursday of each month. This month join them on Thursday, May 12th, at 1:00 p.m. Caregivers, as well as listeners, are welcome to join. Nimble Fingers Update (by Maryann Braun) The Nimble Fingers group donated 20 crib and 20 bassinet sheets to the UW American Family Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Because of the successful holiday craft sale, Nimble Fingers was able to fund this project. Several comments were shared with us: “The nursing staff is excited about the incoming sheets as they have been wrapping mattresses with blankets.” “Your generosity with regard to your time and donating materials is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.” “The sheets are adorable and the nurses were thrilled. They were so grateful. Thank you and the Nimble Fingers for all your hard work!” If you quilt, sew, knit, and/or crochet for charity, please consider joining this group. This group has meetings at 12:30 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of the month. The other Thursdays the sewers generally gather to work on projects. ---PAGE BREAK--- 9 M a y 2 0 1 6 Social Seniors Social Seniors is a group that gets together to partake in activities throughout the community. No need for reservations or to sign-up in advance. You may simply show up to one of their events. Join them on Wednesday, May 4th, at 9:30 a.m. at Hy-Vee, 675 S. Whitney Way for breakfast and planning. Then on Wednesday, May 11th, 10:30 a.m. meet at the Middleton Senior Center to car pool for lunch at Rosie’s, 4604 Monona Drive, then they will go Olbrich Gardens. Anyone is welcome to join them. Tuesday, May 17th, 1:00 p.m. meet at the Middleton Senior Center to car pool to the Norske Nook in DeForest for their famous, delicious pie. Greeting Card Making Class Judy Arawinko, an avid card maker, will be teaching another greeting cards class at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 13th. You will be able to let your creative side shine through with the use of special embellishments, different folding techniques and pretty papers. All supplies are furnished as well as envelopes and inserts for four cards. Cost is $10. 00, space is limited. Due to the popularity of the class, if you are unable to attend this class, (even on class day) please let us know to allow those on the waiting list to enjoy the class. TED Talk Presentation Begins Join us for this interesting new program on Wednesday, May 18th, at 1:00 p.m. TED is a nonprofit organization, devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Joe Carter, will facilitate this hour long program by showing several videos with a discussion between each one. This month’s topic is “Ocean Animals”. Madison College Classes Madison College (formerly MATC) offers classes taught at the Middleton Senior Center. Madison College will cancel all classes that do not have 10 students registered 10 days prior to a class. Strength & Flexibility Classes Strength & Flexibility is a movement class that includes some work on yoga mats and other exercise elements. Farmers Market Vouchers The Middleton Senior Center has vouchers that can be used at the area Farmer’s Markets. The vouchers are available to seniors who are 60 and over and meet the income eligibility limits. If you are interested, a representative from Dane County will be at the Senior Center Wednesday, June 8th, from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. for the distribution. The 2015 income limit for a one-person household is $21,978 (gross) per year (or $1,832 a month), and a two person household limit is $29,637 (gross) per year (or $2,470 a month).
