Please remember to bring your Medicare Card (it is red, white and blue) or your Medicaid Card (black and white). If you do not have these benefits, the cost of the vaccination is $31.00. Bullying, At Our Age? Yes! Join us for a presentation on “Seniors and Bullying” by Home Health United expert Janet Bollig, Medical Social Worker on Tuesday, September 16th at 1:00 p.m. Janet will provide education relating to bullying, a topic typi- cally associated with children and adolescents but is a growing national problem with seniors. You MUST contact the Senior Center the day before you wish to use this valuable service. There is a minimal charge each way for the ride. Meals are served at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. The cost of each meal is $7.50. For diners over age 60, please donate what you can afford. Salad Alternative We offer cold salads as an alternative to the regular Tuesday meal at the dining center ONLY. September 2nd Taco Salad Lettuce, meat (beef or chicken), cheese, tomato, onions, tostado chips. Salsa and sour cream on the side. September 9th Chef Salad Shredded lettuce, ham, turkey, egg, cheese and assorted fresh vegetables. Your choice of dressing. September 16th Garden Salad Mixed salad, fresh vegetables, cheese, egg, celery, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, peas, green onions. Your choice of dressing. September 23rd California Cobb Mixed greens, chicken, blue cheese, avocado or guacamole, tomato and green onions. Your choice of dressing. September 30th Spinach Salad Spinach, mushrooms, purple onion, egg, grape to- matoes and sunflower seeds. Your choice of salad dressing. Bakery Items Mondays The Middleton Senior Center receives bakery items on Mondays ONLY at approximately 10:30 a.m. from Clasen’s. Foot Care Home Health United and the Middleton Senior Cen- ter offer foot care five times each month. Foot Care is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost of Foot Care is $20.00. Contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373 for an appointment. Diabetic Foot Care Diabetic Foot Care cost is $28.00 per visit. This service is offered each month at the Middleton Senior Center. Contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373 for an appointment. Monday Bridge Bridge on Mondays is now open to anyone who wishes to play. You no longer need to find a partner to be able to play. Please arrive by 12:30 p.m. to begin play at 12:45 p.m. Yes, You Can Join Us! If you are age 55 or older, you can participate in the programs at the Middleton Senior Center. You do not have to live in the City of Middleton to join us, and there is no membership fee. There may be a residency requirement for certain services including case management services, transportation and Meals on Wheels. For additional information contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373. Middleton Senior Center Closed The Middleton Senior Center will be closed on Monday, September 1st, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Meals on Wheels will not be delivered nor will meals be served at the Middleton Senior Center. All classes, activities and programs are also cancelled. If you need an extra meal delivered on Friday, August 29th, please be sure to contact Ted Quincey at 831-2373, no later than noon on Thursday, August 28th. ---PAGE BREAK--- 4 s e p t e m b e r 2 0 1 4 Blood Pressure Screening Blood Pressure Screening is offered at 12:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. This month it will be on Tuesday, September 2nd, at 12:30 p.m. Scrabble Mondays Join us to play Scrabble at 9:30 a.m. on Mondays. We have several Scrabble boards, therefore, multiple games may be played. No reservations are needed you may just show up! Sing–Along Join us on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. for a Sing-Along with friends. Join us to sing Tuesday, September 2nd and Tuesday, September 16th, at 10:00 a.m. Sheet music is provided. Mary Duckwitz and Fran Jeatran lead this group as well as accompanying on the piano. New voices are always welcome. Mah Jongg We have an active group of people that play Mah Jongg on Tuesday afternoons at 12:30 p.m. If you would like to join them just show up. If you have a Mah Jongg set, please bring it. We have all levels of players. New players are welcome. Stitchers Join us on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. for knitting and crocheting in the living room. Newcomers are always welcome. Bring your projects and join this social group. BINGO BINGO is played on the last Tuesday of each month. Join us on Tuesday, September 30th, at 1:00 p.m. Come for lunch at 11:30 a.m. and stay for BINGO. Mending Service Mending is offered on the second Tuesday and Thursday of each month. Appointments are required. Our volunteers will do simple mending and hemming they will not alter clothing with linings. You are al- lowed to bring two items per appointment. The next mending days are Tuesday, September 9th and Thursday, September 11th, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Make your appointment by calling 831-2373. Social Seniors Social Seniors have three events this month. Join them on Monday, September 1st, (Labor Day) for a German Smorgasbord at the Dorf Haus. Meet at the Middleton Senior Center parking lot at 5:00 p.m. to carpool. Estimated meal cost is $15.95. Coffee and conversation will be on Wednesday, Septem- ber 10th, at 9:00 a.m. at Sofra, 7457 Elmwood Avenue, Then on Tuesday, September 23rd you can join them for a trolley ride through Middle- ton. Meet at 5:30 p.m. at Villa Dolce, 1828 Parmenter Street. You can ride for free, hop on and off the Trolley until 10:30 p.m. No reservations necessary, simply show up and join in the fun. We are in the process of planning October events that will include a tour of Capital Brewery. Sign IN & Sign UP We have recently upgraded our sign in comput- er and touch screen. The monitor is larger and easier to read when you are signing in with your key card. It is still very important to remember to sign IN with your key card. If you do not have a key card, please ask for one at the front desk and we will arrange for a card. Keeping track of the participant involvement levels and volunteer hours are important for budgeting purposes. It is just as important to sign up in advance if you are planning on attending a program, event or meal. Therefore, if there is a change we can contact you in advance, and it helps us to avoid cancelling programs due to a lack of interest. If you don’t sign up, we don’t know that there is interest in a program and we may cancel that program. PLEASE call us to sign up for any program that you are interested in attending. On Wednesday, September 17th, at 10:30 a.m. they will present Hands Only CPR, Heimlich (Chok- ing First Aid) and basic First Aid until help arrives. You have heard about Compression Only CPR, now learn about from the experts. Join us for this life sav- ing presentation. Middleton Jazz Every Thursday The Middleton Jazz band is continuing to play on Thursday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. Come out and enjoy the music or, if you are feeling musical, bring your instrument to join in. Gadget Guru The Gadget Guru will be available to assist you with the devices you have, but you aren’t quite sure how to work. He will be here on Thursday, Septem- ber 11th and Thursday, September 25th, at 10:00 a.m. No reservation is needed. Newsletter Assembly The October newsletter will be assembled on Tuesday, September 23rd, at 8:30 a.m. for bulk mailing. Doors of the Senior Center will be open at 8:00 a.m. and assembly of the newsletter will not start until 8:30 a.m. Please consider helping out. Essential Tremor Support Group The Essential Tremor Support group meets on the second Wednesday of each month. This month they will meet on Wednesday, September 10th, at 10:30 a.m. New members are welcome. Writing Group The Writing Group meets on the second Wednes- day of each month. This month they will meet on Wednesday, September 10th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Middleton Library. This month’s topics are: Fear: What are you afraid of and how do you deal with it. If you could choose another career it would have been... Write about a small incident in your youth that you have never forgotten. New members are always welcome. Mystery Book Club The book for Wednesday, September 3rd, at 10:00 a.m. is Defending Jacob, by William Landay, a contemporary mystery, Defending Jacob tells the story of a district attorney’s son who is accused of killing a classmate. Can a tendency toward violence be inherited? Is the capacity for murder a genetic disposition? Still Life: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel by Louise Penny is the book for Wednesday, October 1st. Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his team of investigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montreal. The locals are certain it’s a tragic hunting accident and nothing more, but Gamache smells something foul in these remote woods. September Movie “Heaven is for Real” Join us on Friday, September 12th at 12:30 p.m. for this true story of a small-town father who must find the courage and conviction to share his son’s extraordinary, life-changing experi- ence with the world. His son claims to have visited Heaven during a near death experience. His son recounts the details of his amazing journey with childlike innocence and speaks matter-of-factly about things that happened before his birth … things he couldn’t possibly know. Madison College will cancel all classes that do not have 10 students registered 10 days prior to a class. This is a gripping story of friendship and second chances. Penobscot Indian Molly Ayer is close to “aging out” out of the foster care system. A community service position helping an elderly woman clean out her home is the only thing keeping Molly out of juvie and worse...A young Irish immigrant orphaned in New York City, Vivian was put on a train to the Midwest with hundreds of other children whose destinies would be determined by luck and chance. Nimble Fingers Nimble Fingers meets on Thursday afternoons at 12:30 p.m. The first and third Thursdays of each month are meetings to discuss their projects and administrative topics. The remaining Thursdays they work on their projects which are donated to vari- ous community organizations. If you have questions, please call the Senior Center at 831-2373. Strength & Flexibility Classes Strength & Flexibility will continue through the fall. This class is a movement class that includes some work on yoga mats and other exercise elements. It utilizes Tai Chi and Qi Gong principles, and can be tailored to individual levels. All fitness levels are encouraged to join. Wednesdays, 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. September 24th - November 12th (8 weeks) And/Or Fridays, 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. September 26th - November 14th (8 weeks) The cost is $55.00 for one class or $90.00 for both. This is a class for artists of all levels. Join us for drawing class on Wednesdays, at 1:30 p.m. September 3rd - October 22nd. Supplies are easy - just a sketch pad and #2 pencils. Cost is just $10.00 for this 8-week class. To sign up, please call 831-2373. Introduction to Oil Pastels Join us for this all inclusive one day art class to explore oil pastels. Join us on Wednesday, Sep- tember 10th, 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. to learn the basics of oil pastels. You will experiment with differ- ent materials and techniques, and make at least one small paintings during this class. Cost is just $30.00 and includes all of the supplies. Space is limited. Travel Preview Presentation Join us for on Wednesday, September 24th, at 10:00 a.m. for details on the “Flavors of the South” travel show by a Mayflower Tours representative. Craft Vendors Wanted We are looking for “senior” vendors who would like to sell their handmade craft items at our Annual Craft Fair on Friday, November 7th, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. AND Saturday, November 8th 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. The cost for a table is $15.00. Space is limited. For details contact Laura at 831-2373, Rummikub & Games on Fridays A group has started playing Rummikub on Friday mornings at 9:00 a.m. This is a tile game based on Mah Jongg and Rummy. Stop by to play one of the many games we offer like Uno, Checkers, Chess or other games donated to us by the Spiel Foundation. Support Meetings Al-Anon Meeting Al-Anon is a meeting for friends and relatives of alcoholics. They meet each Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome to attend. Caregiver Support Group The Middleton Senior Center offers a Caregiver Support Group that meets on the second Thursday of each month. This month join them on Thursday, September 11th, at 1:00 p.m. Caregivers, as well as listeners, are welcome to join. Low Vision Support Group The Low Vision Support Group meets on the second Thursday of each month. They will meet on Thursday, September 11th, at 10:00 a.m. New members are always welcome. Sober Today Group An open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous meets every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome. Vets Group A group of Veterans began meeting on the third Tuesday of each month at noon at the Middleton Senior Center. Join us on Tuesday, September 16th, at 12:00 p.m. ---PAGE BREAK--- 10 s e p t e m b e r 2 0 1 4 Vision Screening A representative from Sam’s Club Optical Depart- ment will be offering free vision screenings on Tues- day, October 7th from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. The vision screenings will let you know if you need glasses, or a change in your current lenses. They will also be able to do minor repairs to glasses (such as adjusting screws or nose pads). This service is free of charge and you do not need to be a member of Sam’s Club to attend this program or to use their Optical Department. Painting with Oil Pastels Art Class Join us for this class on Wednesday afternoons, October 15th - December 10th, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. This is a fun class for artists of any level who want to learn about the materials and tech- niques of oil pastels. You will learn about the materi- als, and a variety of techniques used with oil pastels. We will complete several small paintings in this class. However, due to the limited space and our programs, there may be times when the equipment is unavailable due to other activities.
