Over 20 senior craft vendors will be selling a variety of handmade items - (including but not limited to) holiday and home decor, jewelry, aprons, dishcloths & pot holders, hats, scarves & mittens, quilts, blankets, baby items, shawls, greeting cards, popcorn & potato bags. For more information call 831-2373. Middleton Library Presentation Join us on Tuesday, November 17th, at 1:00 p.m. for a program about our own Middleton Library. Amy Perry, an Outreach Librarian, will speak about the programs and activities offered by Middleton library. She will discuss the different types of materials you can borrow, the wide array of free adult programs, such as book discussions, author visits, creative writing, as well as computer classes. This librarian visit wouldn’t be complete without books, therefore, make sure to arrive early to choose from the best selection of free books. The Middleton Senior Center meal site is part of Dane County Human Services. Bus Schedule: The Middleton Senior Center offers a number of different transportation options to Middleton residents each week. You MUST contact the Senior Center the day before you wish to use this valuable service. Transportation to the meal site and local grocery shopping is by donation. The suggested donation is $1.00 round trip to the meal site and the suggested donation for local grocery shopping is $2.00 round trip. The fee is based upon your ability to donate. No one will be denied rides for these purposes. These times are tentative and may vary depending on the route and number of people who participate. Meals are served at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. The cost of each meal is $7.50. Home Delivered Meals (Meals on Wheels) are available for home-bound seniors Diners over age 60, please donate what you can afford. Salad Alternative We offer cold salads as an alternative to the regular Tuesday meal at the dining center ONLY. November 3rd Garden Salad Mixed green with shredded lettuce, cheese, garbanzo beans, cucumbers broccoli, diced tomato and peas. Your choice of dressing. November 10th Taco Salad Lettuce, meat (beef), cheese, diced tomatoes, diced onion, salsa, sour cream and tostado chips. November 17th Chef’s Tuna Salad Shredded lettuce, flaked tuna, cheese strips, tomato wedges, sliced radishes, diced green peppers. Served with French Dressing. November 24th Chicken Ranch Salad Mixed greens, diced chicken, crumbled bacon, cucumbers, diced tomatoes, peas, purple onion. Served with Ranch Dressing. Yes, You Can Join Us! If you are age 55 or older, you can participate in the programs at the Middleton Senior Center. You do not have to live in the City of Middleton to join us, and there is no membership fee. There may be a residency requirement for certain services including case management services, transportation and Meals on Wheels. Bakery Items Mondays The Middleton Senior Center receives bakery items on Mondays ONLY at approximately 10:30 a.m. from Clasen’s. Scrabble Mondays Join us to play Scrabble at 9:30 a.m. on Mondays. We have several Scrabble boards; therefore, multiple games may be played. No reservations are needed you may just show up! Cribbage Players We have a Cribbage group that plays on Monday mornings at 9:30 a.m. They are always looking for additional players. We have the cribbage boards, you can just show up. Pinochle Join our Pinochle group on Mondays and Fridays at 12:30 p.m. New members are always welcome. Monday Bridge Bridge on Mondays is now open to anyone who wishes to play. Please arrive by 12:30 p.m. to begin play at 12:45 p.m. Blood Pressure Screening Blood Pressure screening is on the first Tuesday of each month at 12:30 p.m. This month it will be on Tuesday, November 3rd, at 12:30 p.m. Senior Center Closed A reminder that the Middleton Senior Center will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, November 26th and Friday, November 27th. No Meals on Wheels, meal site dinners, or activities will be held at the Senior Center. The cost of Foot Care is $20.00. For an appointment contact 831-2373. Diabetic Foot Care We offer Diabetic Foot Care twice a month. The cost is $28.00 per visit. Contact the Middleton Senior Center, at 831-2373, for an appointment. Stitchers Join us on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. for knitting and crocheting in the living room. Newcomers are always welcome. Bring your projects and join this social group. Sing–Along Join us on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. for a Sing-Along with friends. Join us to sing Tuesday, November 3rd and Tuesday, November 17th, at 10:00 a.m. Sheet music is provided. Mary Duckwitz and Fran Jeatran lead this group as well as accompanying on the piano. New voices welcome. eReader Appointments Learn to use the library’s free eBook service, Wisconsin’s Digital Library, at a personalized electronic book training. Contact Laura at 831-2373 for information. Poetry Writers Join our Poetry writers that meet each Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. No experience necessary. Just drop in and become part of this creative group. Mah Jongg We have an active group of people that play Mah Jongg on Tuesday afternoons* at 12:30 p.m. If you would like to join them, just show up. If you have a Mah Jongg set, please bring it. We have all levels of players. New players are welcome. You MUST bring your own Mah Jongg card. * Please note this group does not play at the Middleton Senior Center on the last Tuesday of the month. Wood Carving Drop In We have a talented group of wood carvers that get together on Tuesday mornings 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. They bring their own projects and share with each other their creative skills and experience. Anyone is welcome to join them any time. Mending Service Mending is usually offered on the second Tuesday and Thursday of each month. This month it will be on Tuesday, November 10th and Thursday, November 12th only, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Appointments are required. Our volunteers will do simple mending and hemming they will not alter clothing with linings. You are allowed to bring two items per appointment. Make your appointment by calling 831-2373. Coffee & The Economy Shannon Riley, of Edward Jones Investments, will begin hosting a program on the second Tuesday of each month, at 9:00 a.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. Join him on Tuesday, November 10th, at 9:00 a.m. for coffee, pastries and a general discussion about financial issues. This month’s topic is a “Market Update and Year End Planning”. Newsletter Assembly The December newsletter will be assembled on Tuesday, November 17th, at 8:30 a.m. for bulk mailing. Essential Tremor Support Group The Essential Tremor Support Group meets on the second Wednesday of each month. They will meet on Wednesday, November 11th, at 10:30 a.m. Writing Group The Writing Group meets on the second Wednesday of each month. They will meet at the Middleton Library on Wednesday, November 11th, at 1:00 p.m. Please write about one of the following: 1. Reminiscing Group The Reminiscing Group meets the first and third Thursdays of each month at 10:00 a.m. They will meet on Thursday, November 5th and November 19th, at 10:00 a.m. Join this interesting group and share your history and stories. Low Vision Support Group The Low Vision Support Group meets on the second Thursday of each month. They will meet at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 12th. New members are welcome. No need for reservations or to sign-up in advance. You may simply show up to one of their events. Meeting an anonymous client late on a sizzling summer night is asking for trouble. But trouble is Chicago private eye V.I. specialty. The book for the Wednesday, December 2nd, 10:00 a.m. meeting is Rumpole Christmas, by John Mortimer. A Rumpole Christmas is a collection of five holiday stories never before published in book form depicting the Old Bailey Hack at his lovable best. In Rumpole and Father Christmas, the English barrister encounters a familiar-looking Santa who he thinks is a thief. Both books are available from the South Central Library system in print, large print, downloadable epub. Books R Us Books R Us will meet on Thursday, November 19th, at 10:00 a.m. (One week earlier, due to the Thanksgiving holiday) This month we are reading Chestnut Street, by Maeve Binchy. Across town from St. Jarlath’s Crescent, featured in Minding Frankie, is Chestnut Street, where neighbors come and go. Behind their closed doors we encounter very different people with different life circumstances, occupations, and sensibilities. New members are always welcome. Middleton Jazz Every Thursday Middleton Jazz is a diverse group of musicians who simply love to create music. They play/practice at the Middleton Senior Center every Thursday morning, 9:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m. They play a variety of songs but specialize in New Orleans jazz. Stop by, join in or have a listen if you are in the area. Nimble Fingers Nimble Fingers is a group of ladies that sew, knit and crochet for charity. We meet the first and third Thursdays of the month. The other Thursdays are spent on sewing projects. We have an ongoing craft sale at the Middleton Senior Center and an annual fair in November. The proceeds are divided between Nimble Fingers and the Senior Center. Nimble Fingers uses their funds to purchase fabric, batting, yarn and other supplies. The ladies make quilts, blankets, lap robes, shawls, hats, scarves, mittens, pillows and pillowcases, baby items, dishcloths and pot holders and many other unique items. These are donated to many local charities such as the UW Children’s Hospital, Gilda’s Club, the VA Hospital, Agrace, The Road Home and many more. Anyone is welcome to join the group. Most of the group work on their projects at home, so you don’t have to come to every meeting. Please consider joining the group for fellowship and the rewards of charitable giving. Rummikub & Games on Fridays A group has started playing Rummikub on Friday mornings at 9:00 a.m. This is a tile game based on Mah Jongg and Rummy. Stop by to play Uno, Checkers, Chess or other games. Inclement Weather Reminder In the event the Middleton-Cross Plains School District closes schools due to bad weather, the Middleton Senior Center will also be closed. Meals on Wheels will not be delivered nor will meals be served at the Middleton Senior Center. The cancelled meal will be served the next day. All classes, activities and programs are cancelled. Contact the Senior Center regarding rescheduled or make up programs. In addition, the shopping bus will not run on days when the Senior Center is closed due to the weather. Coffee Fund Thank you for your monetary donations into the coffee fund it REALLY does make a difference! Although it is not free - it is cheap! ---PAGE BREAK--- 9 N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 5 Medicare Part D Open Enrollment Appointments Medicare Part D is the federal prescription drug benefit for Medicare beneficiaries. It is IMPORTANT that everyone reviews their policy each year - as changes are made to each plan each year. All Medicare beneficiaries have the option to make enrollment changes in their prescription drug plans through December 7th, 2015. You may set up an individual appointment with a Middleton Senior Center volunteer to assist you in making your decision. Appointments with a volunteer are available on Monday afternoons, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. You must make an appointment no walk-ins please. Call 831- 2373 for an appointment. Spanish Ellen Soto will teach several levels of Spanish this month. Contact the Senior Center, at 831-2373, for details. Hats and Tales Hats and Tales is a group of volunteers that read to preschool students with the use of hats and other props. Alzheimer’s Presentation Know the 10 Signs: Early Detection Matters Join us for a presentation by the Alzheimer’s Association of South Central Wisconsin, on Wednesday, November 4th, at 9:30 a.m. These programs are designed to meet the needs of family caregivers and the general community who are seeking information about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Energy Assistance Do you need help with energy bills? A representative from Energy Services will be at the Middleton Senior Center, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 19th. Appointments are necessary. You may schedule your appointment by calling Energy Assistance directly at 267-8601. For additional information contact a Case Manager at the 831-2373. Dementia Friendly Training The Middleton Senior Center is certified as a Dementia Friendly Center. We are offering training on Tuesday, November 10th, at 2:30 p.m. or Wednesday, November 11th, at 5:30 p.m. This hour long training is to help increase awareness, reduce stigma, and misconceptions about dementia. The training will offer tips and advice on how to create a safer and friendlier place for people with dementia. Sign up by calling, 831-2373. Madison College Classes Madison College (formerly MATC) offers classes taught at the Middleton Senior Center. Madison College will cancel all classes that do not have 10 students registered 10 days prior to a class. It is strongly encouraged to sign up for classes as soon as you are interested. Hip and Knee Arthritis Current Treatment Options Dr. Matt Niesen will present at the Middleton Senior Center on Friday, November 20th, at 12:30 p.m. Dr. Niesen, is an orthopedic surgeon who will discuss an overview about arthritis and the operative and non-operative treatments. Matt is a Middleton native and UW Madison graduate. Greeting Card Making Class Judy Arawinko, an avid card maker, will be teaching another greeting cards class at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 13th. You will be able to let your creative side shine through with the use of special embellishments, different folding techniques and pretty papers. All supplies are furnished as well as envelopes and inserts for four cards. Cost is $10. 00, space is limited. Due to the popularity of the class, if you are unable to attend this class, (even on class day) please let us know to allow those on the waiting list to enjoy the class. Thank you for your support of the programs and services offered! ---PAGE BREAK--- 11 N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 5 Holiday Program Mark your calendars for our holiday program on Friday, December 18th, at 1:00 p.m. A special holiday meal will be served at 11:30 a.m. and at 1:00 p.m. Michael Rhoads will present “Collecting Antique and Vintage Christmas.” We will venture from wax angels of the 1820s to the first glass ornaments, kugels in the 1850s. The 1890s will bring us the beginning of the glass ornament revolution along with the introduction of Victorian paper and home- mades, candy containers, china and manufactured Santas. The 1920s will bring us affordable lighting and the entry of Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Japan into the Christmas market. The United States will make a splash during World War II. Italy comes alive with glass ornaments in the 1950s. Along the way we will learn about lesser emphasized items used for decorating and what goes under the Christmas tree. By the end of our talk we will have experienced over a hundred and forty years of collecting Christmas. Christmas in Janesville Monday, December 14th, 2015 There are few spaces left on our holiday trip. Middleton’s own, Michael Rhoads, is helping the Lincoln-Tallman House decorate the first floor of the mansion to reflect antique decorations from the period before 1915. He will be accompanying this trip as the Middleton Senior Center’s resident expert on holiday decorations. You will begin with a tour of the Lincoln-Tallman House and step back in time to a Christmas long ago. You will be transported back to an 1860’s Christmas with Victorian holiday traditions and customs through the eyes of the Tallman family. Some of these are from Michael’s own collection as well. Next, lunch is included at The Armory. Our final holiday stop, we’ll learn about a unique holiday craft at the K&W Greenery. After the workshop, you may browse the unique gift shop. Departure from Middleton at 8:00 a.m. return approximately 4:30 p.m. Cost is $75.00 per person. Reservations and payment due by Friday, November 16th. Driver Escorts Volunteers are needed to provide rides to seniors for medical appointments. The schedule is flexible and volunteers designate when they are available to drive. Mileage is reimbursed.
