The Retro Swing Band will perform at the Middleton Senior Center on Monday, March 16th, at 1:00 p.m. They are an 18 piece ensemble who promote them- selves as “vintage music played by vintage musicians”. Make your reservation for lunch by noon on Friday, March 13th. All cards will be cancelled for the afternoon. Medication Drop and “Let’s Talk About Medicine” Presentation Join us on Tuesday, March 17th, at 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. to drop off your old, outdated medications. Please empty pills into sealed plastic bags and recycle the pill bottles at home. These can include prescription medicine (pills, liquids and creams), over-the-counter medicine (pills, liquids and creams), medications for pets, vitamins, inhalers, nebulizer solution and medication samples. “Let’s Talk About Medicine”, will begin at 1:00 p.m. The Wis- consin Health Literacy has designed this program to help par- ticipants obtain a better understanding of how to more safely and effectively use medicine, which can lead to better health. The Middleton Senior Center meal site is part of Dane County Human Services. Bus Schedule: The Middleton Senior Center offers a number of different transportation options to Middleton resi- dents each week. You MUST contact the Senior Center the day before you wish to use this valuable service. Transportation to the meal site and local grocery shopping is by donation. The suggested donation is $1.00 round trip to the meal site and the suggested donation for local grocery shopping is $2.00 round trip. The fee is based upon your ability to donate. No one will be denied rides for these purposes. These times are tentative and may vary de- pending on the route and number of people who participate. Meals are served at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. The cost of each meal is $7.50. Home Delivered Meals (Meals on Wheels) are available for home-bound seniors Diners over age 60, please donate what you can afford. For further information contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373. Salad Alternative We offer cold salads as an alternative to the regular Tuesday meal at the dining center ONLY. March 3rd Taco Salad Lettuce, meat (beef or chicken), cheese, tomato, onions, tostado chips. Salsa and sour cream on the side. March 10th Chef Salad Shredded lettuce, ham, turkey, egg, cheese and assorted fresh vegetables. Your choice of dressing. March 17th Chinese Chicken Salad Chicken, celery, green pepper, sweet onion, mandarin oranges and pineapple mixed with salad dressing and mustard served on lettuce with Chinese noodles. March 24th Garden Salad Mixed salad, fresh vegetables, cheese, egg, celery, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, peas, green onions. Your choice of dressing. Vegetarian Option We offer a vegetarian option to our lunch menu. For details contact Ted at 831-2373. Bakery Items Mondays The Middleton Senior Center receives bakery items on Mondays ONLY at approximately 10:30 a.m. from Clasen’s. Foot Care Home Health United and the Middleton Senior Cen- ter offer foot care five times each month. Foot Care is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost of Foot Care is $20.00. Contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373 for an appointment. Diabetic Foot Care Additional Day We have added another morning of Diabetic Foot Care to our schedule. The cost is $28.00 per visit. This service is offered twice a month at the Middle- ton Senior Center. Contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373 for an appointment. Scrabble Mondays Join us to play Scrabble at 9:30 a.m. on Mondays. We have several Scrabble boards, therefore, multiple games may be played. No reservations are needed you may just show up! Yes, You Can Join Us! If you are age 55 or older, you can participate in the programs at the Middleton Senior Center. You do not have to live in the City of Middleton to join us, and there is no membership fee. There may be a residency requirement for certain services including case management services, transportation and Meals on Wheels. For additional information contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373. Inclement Weather Reminder In the event the Middleton-Cross Plains School District closes schools due to bad weather, the Middleton Senior Center will also be closed. Meals on Wheels will not be delivered nor will meals be served at the Middleton Senior Center. The cancelled meal will be served the next day. All classes, activities and programs are cancelled. Contact the Senior Center regarding resched- uled or make up programs. In addition, the shop- ping bus will not run on days when the Senior Center is closed due to the weather. ---PAGE BREAK--- 4 m a r c h 2 0 1 5 Cribbage Players We have a Cribbage group that plays on Monday mornings at 9:30 a.m. They are always looking for additional players. We have the cribbage boards, you can just show up. Monday Bridge Bridge on Mondays is now open to anyone who wishes to play. Please arrive by 12:30 p.m. to begin play at 12:45 p.m. No Bridge on Monday, March 16th. Pinochle Join our Pinochle group on Mondays and Fridays at 12:30 p.m. New members are always welcome. Blood Pressure Screening Blood Pressure Screening is offered at 12:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. This month it will be on Tuesday, March 3rd, at 12:30 p.m. Sing–Along Join us on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. for a Sing-Along with friends. Join us to sing Tuesday, March 3rd and Tuesday, March 17th, at 10:00 a.m. Sheet music is provided. Mary Duckwitz and Fran Jeatran lead this group as well as accompanying on the piano. New voices welcome. Mah Jongg We have an active group of people that play Mah Jongg on Tuesday afternoons* at 12:30 p.m. If you would like to join them just show up. If you have a Mah Jongg set, please bring it. We have all levels of players. New players are welcome. * Please note this group does not play at the Middle- ton Senior Center on the last Tuesday of the month. Stitchers Join us on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. for knitting and crocheting in the living room. Newcomers are always welcome. Bring your projects and join this social group. Newsletter Assembly The April newsletter will be assembled on Tuesday, March 24th, at 8:30 a.m. for bulk mailing. Doors of the Senior Center will be open at 8:00 a.m. and assembly of the newsletter will begin at 8:30 a.m. Please consider helping out. Mending Service Mending is offered on the second Tuesday and Thursday of each month. Appointments are required. Our volunteers will do simple mending and hemming they will not alter clothing with linings. You are allowed to bring two items per appointment. The next mending days are Tuesday, March 10th and Thursday, March 12th, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Make your appointment by calling 831-2373. BINGO BINGO is played on the last Tuesday of each month. Join us on Tuesday, March 31st, at 1:00 p.m. Come for lunch at 11:30 a.m. and stay for BINGO. Sign IN & Sign UP We have recently upgraded our sign in comput- er and touch screen. The monitor is larger and easier to read when you are signing in with your key card. It is still very important to remember to sign IN with your key card. If you do not have a key card, please ask for one at the front desk and we will arrange for a card. Keeping track of the participant involvement levels and volunteer hours are important for budgeting purposes. It is just as important to sign up in advance if you are planning on attending a program, event or meal. Therefore, if there is a change we can contact you in advance, and it helps us to avoid cancelling programs due to a lack of interest. If you don’t sign up, we don’t know that there is interest in a program and we may cancel that program. PLEASE call us to sign up for any program that you are interested in attending. The first and third Thursdays of each month are meetings to discuss their projects and administrative topics. The remaining Thursdays they work on their projects which are donated to various community organiza- tions. Please consider sharing your talent and join this group. Rummikub & Games on Fridays A group has started playing Rummikub on Friday mornings at 9:00 a.m. This is a tile game based on Mah Jongg and Rummy. Come to play or start another game, such as Uno, Checkers or Chess. Books R Us Books R Us will meet on Thursday, March 26th, at 10:00 a.m. The book this month is “The Hus- band’s Secret” by Liane Moriarty. Imagine that your husband wrote you a letter, to be opened after his death. Imagine, too, that the letter contains his deep- est, darkest secret—something with the potential to destroy not just the life you built together, but the lives of others as well. Imagine, then, that you stumble across that letter while your husband is still very much alive. Social Seniors Social Seniors will have breakfast on Wednesday, March 11th, at 9:00 a.m. at TNT Cafe, 729 N High Point Road. On Tuesday, March 17th, they will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with lunch at Claddagh Irish Pub at Greenway Station at 11:30 p.m. On Wednesday, March 25th, they will go to Imperial Garden, 2039 Allen Blvd, for lunch at 11:30 a.m. No need to sign up, just show up at these locations to join them. Writing Group The Writing Group meets on the second Wednesday of each month. This month they will meet at the Middleton Library on Wednesday, March 11th, at 1:00 p.m. This month’s topics are to write about luck or serendipity, a plan for advocating for your- self, or a form of entertainment that changed your life. (A play, concert, movie or sporting event) New members are always welcome. Gadget Guru Our Gadget Guru is at the Middleton Senior Center on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month to assist you with your gadgets. If you have a new device and need a little help, Dave will be available on Thursday, March 12th, and Thursday, March 26th, at 10:00 a.m. Middleton Jazz Every Thursday Middleton Jazz is a diverse group of musicians who simply love to create music. They play/practice at the Middleton Senior Center every Thursday morn- ing, 9:30 -11:30 a.m. They play a variety of songs but specialize in New Orleans jazz. Stop by, join in or have a listen if you are in the area. Reminiscing Group The Reminiscing Group meets the first and third Thursdays of each month at 10:00 a.m. They will meet on Thursday, March 5th and Thursday, March 19th, at 10:00 a.m. Join this interesting group and share your history and stories. March Movie “Million Dollar Arm” Join us on Friday, March 13th, at 12:30 p.m. for the movie “Million Dollar Arm”. In 2008, J. B. March is Essential Tremor Month Essential tremor, a neurological movement disorder commonly referred to as “ET”, affects nearly 10 million Americans. ET most often causes involuntary and uncontrollable shaking of the hands and arms during movement, but can sometimes also affect the head, voice, legs and trunk. ET is very frequently misdiagnosed as Parkinson’s disease but affects 8 times as many people. Although not fatal, ET is aserious and progressive condition that can definitely threaten quality of life socially, professionally and emotionally. People with ET often have difficulty with daily activities such as getting dressed, eating, drinking, speaking or writing. Do you have ET or know someone with ET? Please join us at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 11th the 2nd Wednesday of every month at the Middleton Senior Center to learn more and share strategies for living with this challenging condition. They meet each Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome to attend. Caregiver Support Group The Middleton Senior Center offers a Caregiver Support Group that meets on the second Thursday of each month. This month join them on Thursday, March 12th, at 1:00 p.m. Caregivers, as well as listeners, are welcome to join. Essential Tremor Support Group The Essential Tremor Support Group meets on the second Wednesday of each month. They will meet on Wednesday, March 11th at 10:30 a.m. Anyone is welcome to attend. Low Vision Support Group The Low Vision Support Group meets on the sec- ond Thursday of each month. This month they will meet at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 12th. New members are always welcome. Sober Today Group An open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous meets every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome. Vets Group A group of Veterans meets on the third Tuesday of each month at noon at the Middleton Senior Cen- ter. Join us on Tuesday, March 17th, at 12:00 p.m. Neil O’Connor, a counselor and veteran from the Madison Vet Center facilitates the group meeting. Contact Neil at 264-5342, for additional information. ---PAGE BREAK--- 10 M a r c h 2 0 1 5 Strength & Flexibility Classes Strength & Flexibility will continue through the winter. This class is a movement class that includes some work on yoga mats and other exercise ele- ments. It utilizes Tai Chi and Qi Gong principles, and can be tailored to individual levels. All fitness levels are encouraged to join. Medication Drop and “Let’s Talk About Medicine” Presentation Join us on Tuesday, March 17th, for at 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. to drop off your old, outdated medica- tions. Please empty pills into sealed plastic bags and recycle the pill bottles at home. “Let’s Talk About Medicine” will begin at 1:00 p.m. The Wisconsin Health Literacy designed this program to help partic- ipants obtain a better understanding of how to more safely and effectively use medicine, which can lead to better health. Community Planting Amy Jo Dusick will be at the Senior Center on Mon- day, March 9th, from 9:00 -11:00 a.m. to answer questions about volunteer interests for this spring and summer at the Middleton City Hall Community Garden. The schedule is flexible and volunteers designate when they are available to drive. Mileage can be reimbursed. Many seniors rely on this form of transportation to get to vital appointments. We are looking for a cheerful, helpful person who understands the importance of good customer service. If you are interested in this volunteer opportunity, contact Sandy at 831-2373. Dining Volunteers Volunteers are needed to assist in the kitchen. Duties include packaging meals for delivery for Meals on Wheels, serving lunch to seniors at the meal site and cleaning up. Mending We are looking for substitute mending volunteers on the second Tuesday and Thursday of each month. Work consists of simple mending and hemming. No zippers or linings are done. Hats and Tales Readers Hats and Tales is a group that reads stories to pre- school students and uses hats and props to animate the story. We are looking for new members to read once a month to the children at Little Red Preschool.
