They are an 18 piece ensemble who promote themselves as “vintage music played by vintage musicians”. Make your reservation for lunch by noon on Friday, February 12th. All cards will be cancelled for the afternoon. Middleton Outreach Ministry Join us on Tuesday, February 16th, at 1:00 p.m. for a presentation about Middleton Outreach Ministry (MOM). Maureen Berghoefer will speak about their senior programs as well as their volunteer opportunities. MOM is a non-profit that is leading a community-wide effort to prevent homelessness and end hunger for people. The Middleton Senior Center meal site is part of Dane County Human Services. Bus Schedule: The Middleton Senior Center offers a number of different transportation options to Middleton residents each week. You MUST contact the Senior Center the day before you wish to use this valuable service. Transportation to the meal site and local grocery shopping is by donation. The suggested donation is $1.00 round trip to the meal site and the suggested donation for local grocery shopping is $2.00 round trip. The fee is based upon your ability to donate. No one will be denied rides for these purposes. These times are tentative and may vary de- pending on the route and number of people who participate. Meals are served at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. The cost of each meal is $7.50. Home Delivered Meals (Meals on Wheels) are available for home-bound seniors Diners over age 60, please donate what you can afford. For further information contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373. Salad Alternative We offer cold salads as an alternative to the regular Tuesday meal at the dining center ONLY. February 2nd Garden Salad Mixed green shredded lettuce, cheese, garbanzo beans, cucumbers, broccoli, diced tomatoes and peas. Your choice of dressing. February 9th Taco Salad Shredded lettuce, meat (beef), cheese, diced tomato, onions, tostado chips. Salsa and sour cream on the side. February 16th Chef’s Tuna Salad Shredded lettuce, flaked tuna, cheese strips, tomato wedges, sliced radishes, diced green peppers and shredded carrots. French dressing. February 23rd Chicken Ranch Salad Shredded lettuce, diced chicken, crumbled bacon, cucumbers, diced tomatoes, peas and purple onion. Ranch dressing. Vegetarian Option We offer a vegetarian option to our lunch menu. For details contact Ted at 831-2373. Bakery Items Mondays The Middleton Senior Center receives bakery items on Mondays ONLY at approximately 10:30 a.m. from Clasen’s. Foot Care Home Health United and the Middleton Senior Center offer foot care five times each month. Foot Care is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost of Foot Care is $20.00. Contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373 for an appointment. Diabetic Foot Care Diabetic Foot Care cost is $28.00 per visit. This service is offered each month at the Middleton Senior Center. Contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373 for an appointment. Scrabble Mondays Join us to play Scrabble at 9:00 a.m. on Mondays. We have several Scrabble boards, therefore, multiple games may be played. No reservations are needed you may just show up! Yes, You Can Join Us! If you are age 55 or older, you can participate in the programs at the Middleton Senior Center. You do not have to live in the City of Middleton to join us, and there is no membership fee. There may be a residency requirement for certain services including case management services, transportation and Meals on Wheels. For additional information contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373. Inclement Weather Reminder In the event the Middleton-Cross Plains School District closes schools due to bad weather, the Middleton Senior Center will also be closed. Meals on Wheels will not be delivered nor will meals be served at the Middleton Senior Center. The cancelled meal will be served the next day. All classes, activities and programs are cancelled. Contact the Senior Center regarding resched- uled or make up programs. In addition, the shop- ping bus will not run on days when the Senior Center is closed due to the weather. ---PAGE BREAK--- 4 f e b r u a r y 2 0 1 6 Cribbage Players We have a Cribbage group that plays on Monday mornings at 9:30 a.m. They are always looking for additional players. We have the cribbage boards, you can just show up. Monday Bridge Bridge on Mondays is now open to anyone who wishes to play. Please arrive by 12:30 p.m. to begin play at 12:45 p.m. Pinochle Join our Pinochle group on Mondays and Fridays at 12:30 p.m. New members are always welcome. Mah Jongg We have an active group of people that play Mah Jongg on Tuesday afternoons* at 12:30 p.m. If you would like to join them just show up. If you have a Mah Jongg set, please bring it. We have all levels of players. New players are welcome. You MUST bring your own Mah Jongg card. * Please note this group does not play at the Middleton Senior Center on the last Tuesday of the month. Cards Cancelled Monday, February 15th All Monday cards will be cancelled on Monday, February 15th, for the Valentine’s Day program. Sing–Along Join us on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. for a Sing-Along with friends. Join us to sing Tuesday, February 2nd and Tuesday, February 16th, at 10:00 a.m. Sheet music is provided. Mary Duckwitz and Fran Jeatran lead this group as well as accompanying on the piano. Blood Pressure Screening Blood Pressure Screening is offered at 12:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. This month it will be on Tuesday, February 2nd, at 12:30 p.m. Stitchers Join us on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. for knitting and crocheting in the living room. Newcomers are always welcome. Bring your projects and join this social group. Newsletter Assembly The March newsletter will be assembled on Tuesday, February 23rd, at 8:30 a.m. for bulk mailing. Doors of the Senior Center will be open at 8:00 a.m. and assembly of the newsletter will begin at 8:30 a.m. Please consider helping out. BINGO BINGO is played on the last Tuesday of each month. Join us on Tuesday, February 23rd, at 1:00 p.m. Come for lunch at 11:30 a.m. and stay for BINGO. Sign IN & Sign UP Please remember to notify the Middleton Senior Center staff of any changes to your address, phone or emergency contacts. It is very important to remember to sign IN with your key card. If you do not have a key card, please ask for one at the front desk and we will arrange for a card. Keeping track of the participant involvement levels and volunteer hours are important for budgeting purposes. It is just as important to sign up in advance if you are planning on attending a program, event or meal. Therefore, if there is a change we can contact you in advance, and it helps us to avoid cancelling programs due to a lack of interest. If you don’t sign up, we don’t know that there is interest in a program and we may cancel that program. PLEASE call us to sign up for any program that you are interested in attending or call to cancel if you are unable to attend. This will make your space available to someone on our waiting list. This is a group of creative seniors that write about a variety of topics in a variety of writing styles. Each month a different member decides on the topics and styles of writing. Each member brings their homework to share with the class. This month they will meet on Wednesday, February 10th. at 1:00 p.m. at the Middleton Library. This month’s topic is to write about one of the following: An emotion that is very hard to think or to write about; or take a nursery rhyme, rewrite it giving it an entire new twist or flavor; or write a letter to the editor, as well as share what prompted it. Gadget Guru Our Gadget Guru is at the Middleton Senior Center on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month to assist you with your gadgets. If you have a new device and need a little help, Dave will be available on Thursday, February 11th, and Thursday, February 25th, at 10:00 a.m. Wood Carving Drop In We have a talented group of wood carvers that get together on Tuesday mornings 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. They bring their own projects and share with each other their creative skills and experience. Anyone is welcome to join them any time. Mending Service Mending is offered on the second Tuesday and Thursday of each month. Appointments are required. Our volunteers will do simple mending and hemming they will not alter clothing with linings. You are allowed to bring two items per appointment. The next mending days are Tuesday, February 9th and Thursday, February 11th, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Make your appointment by calling 831-2373. Coffee & The Economy Shannon Riley, of Edward Jones Investments, will begin hosting a program on the second Tuesday of each month, at 9:00 a.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. Join him on Tuesday, February 9th, at 9:00 a.m. for coffee, pastries and a general discussion about financial issues. This month’s topic is a “Stocks: ‘The Nuts and Bolts’ + Protect Yourself: What Is Identity Theft?” Al-Anon Meeting Al-Anon is a meeting for friends and relatives of alcoholics. They meet each Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome to attend. Sober Today Group An open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous meets every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome. Essential Tremor Support Group Resumes The Essential Tremor Support Group will resume meeting on the second Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m. This month they will meet on Wednesday, February 10th, at 10:30 a.m. Anyone is welcome to attend. February Movie “The Intern” Join us on Friday, February 12th, at 12:30 p.m. for the movie “ The Intern”. We were unable to show this movie in January, therefore, we will show it in February. 70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro) has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. During the summer of 1968 in Rockbridge County, Virginia, 11 year-old Shenandoah Carmody’s mother disappeared. Her twin sister, Woody, stopped speaking, and her once-loving father slipped into a mean drunkenness unfitting a superior court judge. Books R Us Books R Us will meet on Thursday, February 25th, at 10:00 a.m. The February book selection is The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith, tells the story of the delightfully cunning and enormously engaging Precious Ramotswe, who is drawn to her profession to “help people with problems in their lives.” She is hired to track down a missing husband, uncover a con man, and follow a wayward daughter. But the case that tugs at her heart, and lands her in danger, is a missing boy, who may have been snatched by witchdoctors. New members are always welcome. Hats and Tales Hats and Tales is a group of volunteers that read to preschool students with the use of hats and other props. They will meet at 10:00 a.m. at Little Red Preschool on Wednesday, February 10th. If you have a short book to read, please bring it. This is a women’s only group that will discuss the changes as we age. Pat Ball, a retired educator and counselor, will facilitate on topics that include, physical, emotional and changes as well as a variety of other issues. Please join us on Wednesday, February 10th, at 10:30 a.m. and on Wednesday, February 24th, at 10:30 a.m. Caregiver Support Group The Middleton Senior Center offers a Caregiver Support Group that meets on the second Thursday of each month. This month join them on Thursday, February 11th, at 1:00 p.m. Caregivers, as well as listeners, are welcome to join. Low Vision Support Group Suspended The Low Vision Support Group will not meet in February. They will begin meeting on the second Thursday of each month at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 10th. New members welcome. Social Seniors Social Seniors is a group that gets together to partake in activities throughout the community. No need for reservations or to sign-up in advance. You may simply show up to one of their events. They will have breakfast on Wednesday, February 3rd at 9:15 a.m. at Hy-Vee, 675 South Whitney Way. On Thursday, February 18th, they will enjoy lunch together at 11:30 a.m. at Biaggi’s, 601 Junction Road. On Monday, February 29th, at 6:30 p.m. they will meet at the Middleton Library for “Poets of Tin Pan Alley”. Middleton Jazz Every Thursday The Middleton Jazz band is continuing to play on Thursday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. Come and enjoy the music or, if you are feeling musical, bring your instrument to join in. Reminiscing Group The Reminiscing Group meets the first and third Thursdays of each month at 10:00 a.m. They meet on Thursday, February 4th and Thursday, February 18th, at 10:00 a.m. This is a group where you can meet new people and share your history. Nimble Fingers Nimble Fingers meets on Thursday afternoons at 12:30 p.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. The first and third Thursdays of each month are meetings to discuss their projects and administrative topics. The remaining Thursdays they work on their projects which are donated to various community organizations. Please consider sharing your talent and join this group. Rummikub & Games on Fridays Rummikub and other games are played on Friday mornings at 9:00 a.m. This is a tile game based on Mah Jongg and Rummy. Come to play or start another game, such as Uno, Checkers or Chess. Video Lecture Turning Points in American History Join us on Friday mornings at 10:15 a.m. February 19th - July 29th (24 weeks). This is your chance to relive the most powerful and ground-breaking moments in the fascinating story of the United States of America. Spanning the arrival of the first English colonists to the chaos of the Civil War to the birth of the computer age and beyond, this course is a captivating and comprehensive tour of those particular moments in the story of America, after which the nation would never be the same. Advanced registration is required. ---PAGE BREAK--- 10 f e b r u a r y 2 0 1 6 Tax Counseling The Middleton Senior Center is an AARP sponsored tax site. This service is designed for those with low to moderate income, catering especially to those over age 60. Tax counselors will be available to assist, complete and electronically file your taxes on Mondays and Wednesdays, through April 11th. Appointments are required, call 831-2373 to schedule yours today. We are unable to assist those who are self- employed with business income that does not meet the requirements for reporting on federal Sch. C-EZ, have rental income that involves depreciation, or are married and file separately. We also reserve the right to defer tax returns that are too complex or time consuming. Greeting Card Making Class Judy Arawinko, an avid card maker, will be teaching another greeting cards class at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 19th. You will be able to let your creative side shine through with the use of special embellishments, different folding techniques and pretty papers. All supplies are furnished as well as envelopes and inserts for four cards. Cost is $10. 00, space is limited. Due to the popularity of the class, if you are unable to attend this class, (even on class day) please let us know to allow those on the waiting list to enjoy the class. Painting with Oil Pastels Art Class Join us for this class on Wednesday afternoons, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. February 3rd - June 1st. A fun class for artists of any level who want to learn about the materials and techniques of oil pastels. We will complete several small paintings in this class. A list of supplies will be sent to you when you register. The cost is $270.00 for 18 classes, $180.00 for 10 classes, or you may pay by the class ($20.00 each). The schedule is flexible and volunteers designate when they are available to drive. Mileage is reimbursed. Many seniors rely on this form of transportation to get to vital appointments. Be Prepared - Disaster Preparedness Join us on Tuesday, February 2nd, at 12:30 p.m. to learn how to identify your needs in an emergency. Elizabeth Jones, Americorps member, will present about planning ahead. She will cover a number of preparedness topics including, gathering a supply of materials that will meet those needs, (emergency kit), knowing how your household will meet your needs, (emergency plan), and knowing when to take particular actions to meet your needs (staying informed). Preparation increases your ability to provide for your needs in times of emergency.
