The Middleton Senior Center meal site is part of Dane County Human Services. Bus Schedule: The Middleton Senior Center offers a number of different transportation options to Middleton residents each week. You MUST contact the Senior Center the day before you wish to use this valuable service. Transportation to the meal site and local grocery shopping is by donation. The suggested donation is $1.00 round trip to the meal site and the suggested donation for local grocery shopping is $2.00 round trip. The fee is based upon your ability to donate. No one will be denied rides for these purposes. These times are tentative and may vary depending on the route and number of people who participate. For further information contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373. Salad Alternative We offer cold salads as an alternative to the regular Tuesday meal at the dining center ONLY. August 2nd Garden Salad Mixed greens with shredded lettuce, cheese, garbanzo beans, cucumbers, broccoli, diced tomato and peas. Your choice of dressing. August 9th Taco Salad Lettuce, meat (beef), cheese, diced tomatoes, diced onion, salsa, sour cream and tostado chips. August 16th Chef Salad Shredded lettuce, ham, turkey, cheese, tomato wedges, shredded carrots, radishes, diced cucumbers. Your choice of dressing. August 23rd Chicken Ranch Salad Mixed greens, diced chicken, crumbled bacon, cucumbers, diced tomatoes, peas, purple onion. Served with Ranch Dressing. August 30th Italian Salad Bowl Mixed greens with shredded lettuce, radishes, mushrooms and tomatoes. Served with Italian Dressing. Vegetarian Option We offer a vegetarian option to our lunch menu. For details contact Ted at 831-2373. Bakery Items Mondays The Middleton Senior Center receives bakery items on Mondays ONLY at approximately 10:30 a.m. from Clasen’s. Scrabble Mondays Join us to play Scrabble at 9:00 a.m. on Mondays. We have several Scrabble boards; therefore, multiple games may be played. No reservations are needed you may just show up! Cribbage Players We have a Cribbage group that plays on Monday mornings at 9:30 a.m. They are always looking for additional players. We have the cribbage boards, you can just show up. Pinochle Join our Pinochle group on Mondays and Fridays at 12:30 p.m. New members are always welcome. Foot Care Home Health United and the Middleton Senior Center offer foot care several times each month. The cost of Foot Care is $20.00. For an appointment contact 831-2373. Diabetic Foot Care We offer Diabetic Foot Care twice a month. The cost is $28.00 per visit. Contact the Middleton Senior Center, at 831-2373, for an appointment. Senior Center Closed The Senior Center will also be closed on Monday, September 5th, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Meals on Wheels will NOT be delivered nor will meals be served at the Middleton Senior Center. All classes, activities and programs are also cancelled. Contact a Case Manager should you need additional assistance. Dining Center Information All menu items are prepared in kitchens that are not allergen-free. Please arrive by 12:30 p.m. to begin play at 12:45 p.m. Open Cards The Middleton Senior Center hosts Open Cards on Monday and Thursday afternoons. If you have a group of people that are looking for a place to play cards, you may show up. Please check in at the front desk to confirm about space availability. Wii Sports The Middleton Senior Center has a Wii Video Gaming system. Participants play the games, primarily bowling, but other games as well, on Mondays at 12:30 p.m. No need to sign up, just show up. Blood Pressure Screening Blood Pressure screening takes place on the first Tuesday of each month at 12:30 p.m. This month it will be on Tuesday, August 2nd, at 12:30 p.m. Sing–Along Join us on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. for a Sing-Along with friends. Singing takes place on Tuesday, August 2nd and Tuesday, August 16th, at 10:00 a.m. Sheet music is provided. Mary Duckwitz and Fran Jeatran lead this group as well as accompanying on the piano. New voices welcome. Wood Carving Drop In We have a talented group of wood carvers that get together on Tuesday mornings 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. They bring their own projects and share with each other their creative skills and experience. Anyone is welcome to join them any time. Mah Jongg We have an active group of people that play Mah Jongg on Tuesday afternoons* at 12:30 p.m. If you would like to join them, just show up. If you have a Mah Jongg set, please bring it. We have all levels of players. New players are welcome. You MUST bring your own Mah Jongg card. * Please note this group does not play at the Middleton Senior Center on the last Tuesday of the month. Stitchers Join us on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. for knitting and crocheting in the living room. Newcomers are always welcome. Bring your projects and join this social group. Spanish Ellen Soto teaches several levels of Spanish. A new section begins each month and runs for four weeks, August classes begin on August 2nd and will be on Tuesday mornings. 9:00 a.m. Conversational Spanish 10:00 a.m. Spanish for Short Sentences 11:00 a.m. Spanish Grammar A beginners Spanish will start on Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m. Cost for each class is just $5.00 for the four-week class. Poetry Class for Everyone Exercise your mind and stretch your creative muscles in a poetry class led by writer/poet Marla Maeder. The Poetry group meets on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. Turn your feelings, memories and observations into free verse, rhyme or haiku, anything goes. Call 831-2373 to sign up or just show up. Yes, You Can Join Us! If you are age 55 or older, you can participate in the programs at the Middleton Senior Center. You do not have to live in the City of Middleton to join us, and there is no membership fee. There may be a residency requirement for certain services including case management services, transportation and Meals on Wheels. This month’s topic will include a Market Update and “Advisory Solutions How Managed Account Programs Work.” Mending Service Mending is offered on the second Tuesday and Thursday of each month. This month it will be on Tuesday, August 9th and Thursday, August 11th, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. We currently have only one volunteer doing simple mending and hemming they will not alter clothing with linings. Newsletter Assembly The September newsletter will be assembled at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 23rd, for bulk mailing. Join us on Tuesday, August 30th, at 1:00 p.m. Come for lunch at 11:30 a.m. and stay for BINGO. Al-Anon Meeting Al-Anon is a meeting for friends and relatives of alcoholics. They meet each Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome to attend. Sober Today Group An open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous meets every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. August Movie “Joy” Join us for an afternoon movie on Friday, August 12th, at 12:30 p.m. to watch “Joy”. A story of a family across four generations, centered on the girl who becomes the woman (Jennifer Lawrence) who founds a business dynasty and becomes a matriarch in her own right. This women only group meets to discuss the changes we go through as we age. Pat Ball facilitates on topics that include, physical, emotional and changes as well as a variety of other issues. Please join us on Wednesday, August 10th, at 10:30 a.m. and on Wednesday, August 24th, at 10:30 a.m. Writing Group The Middleton Senior Center has a thriving group of writers that meets on the second Wednesday of each month. This month they will meet on Wednesday, August 10th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. This is a group of creative seniors that write about a variety of topics in a variety of writing styles. Each month a different member decides on the topics and styles of writing. Participants bring their homework to share with the class. Choose one of the following quotes to write about: 1. The funniest thing that ever happened to you. 2. The happiest thing that ever happened to you. 3. The starriest thing that ever happened to you. New members welcome. Middleton Jazz Every Thursday Middleton Jazz is a diverse group of musicians who simply love to create music. They play/practice at the Middleton Senior Center every Thursday morning, 9:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m. They play a variety of songs but specialize in New Orleans jazz. Stop by, join in or have a listen if you are in the area. TED Talk Presentation Change TED Talk has moved to the second Thursday of each month at 9:30 a.m. Joe Carter, will continue to facilitate this program on Thursday, August 11th, at 9:30 a.m. Joe will be showing selections of the Best of TED Talks. If you have topics that you would like to see, please contact Laura, 831-2373. TED is a nonprofit organization, devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Books R Us Books R Us meets on the fourth Thursday of each month. This month they will meet on Thursday, August 25th, at 10:00 a.m. to discuss A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute. Jean Paget was born in Malaya, in 1921. At that time Malaya was ruled by the British and many people from Britain lived and worked in Malaya. The most important industries were mining tin and growing rubber. Jean Paget’s father was the manager of a large rubber estate. Mr Paget lived on the rubber estate with his wife and family. There were two children. At first, Mrs Paget taught the children herself. But when Donald was thirteen, he had to go to school in England. Jean was only ten at that time, but she went back to England as well. The two children went to stay with their grandparents near Southampton, a large town about eighty miles from London. Reminiscing Group The Reminiscing Group meets the first and third Thursdays of each month at 10:00 a.m. They will meet on Thursday, August 4th and Thursday, August 18th, at 10:00 a.m. Join this interesting group and share your history and stories. Caregiver Support Group The Middleton Senior Center offers a Caregiver Support Group that meets on the second Thursday of each month. This month join them on Thursday, August 11th, at 1:00 p.m. Caregivers, as well as listeners, are welcome to join. Nimble Fingers Nimble Fingers is a group of ladies that sew, knit and crochet for charity. They meet the first and third Thursdays of the month at 12:30 p.m. The other Thursdays are spent on sewing projects. We have an ongoing craft sale at the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome to join the group on any Thursday afternoon. Consider joining the group for fellowship and the rewards of charitable giving. Rummikub A group has started playing Rummikub on Friday mornings at 9:00 a.m. This is a tile game based on Mah Jongg and Rummy. New members welcome. SAFE at Home/Falls Prevention Presentation Join us on Monday, August 15th, at 1:00 p.m. for a SAFE at Home/Falls Prevention program by a representative from Home Health United. The goal of SAFE at Home is to reduce falls and help participants to live safely and independently in their own homes as long as possible. A trained staff will conduct an in-home safety assessment and let you know what safety features are already in place, make recommendations as to what could be helpful, as well as, work with you to implement these changes. You may sign up by calling 831-2373. ---PAGE BREAK--- 10 a u g u s t 2 0 1 6 Social Seniors Social Seniors is a group that gets together to partake in activities throughout the community. No need for reservations or to sign-up in advance. You may simply show up to one of their events. Join them on Wednesday, August 3rd, at 9:15 a.m. at Hy-Vee, 675 S Whitney Way, for breakfast and planning. Scarf Dyeing Class Judy Arawinko will be teaching a scarf dyeing class at the Middleton Senior Center on Wednesday, August 24th, at 1:00 p.m. Cost is just $16.00 and you will make a scarf with your own design to keep or give as a gift. This is purposeful walking class while using walking poles. The focus of the Balance Walking Class is to improve coordination, balance, posture, and breathing. It is lower impact walking on your body and joints than walking alone. The poles assist you in reducing the impact and distribute weight from your lower back, hips, knees, and ankles to the upper body. TOPS Interest The Middleton Senior Center is starting a TOPS program. Join us on Wednesday, August 17th, at 10:00 a.m. for an informational meeting. Taking Pounds Off Sensibly (TOPS) is a weight loss program based on members helping and supporting each other. It focuses on making small, steady lifestyle changes that provide lasting weight loss and better health. Yearly membership is $32.00, and chapter dues of $1.00 - $3.00 per month. They meet once a month a short business meeting, a weigh-in and a topic of discussion. Meetings are one hour. At no time are individual weights ever discussed during the meeting. You may sign up by calling at 831-2373. AARP Smart Driver Class AARP and the Middleton Senior Center are offering the Smart Driver class. This is a course designed to help older drivers become more aware of changes that occur due to aging (vision, hearing and reaction time) and how to adjust driving accordingly. The class will be Friday, September 30th, 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The cost is $15.00 for AARP members, and $20.00 for non-members. The schedule is flexible and volunteers designate when they are available to drive. Mileage is reimbursed. Many seniors rely on this form of transportation to get to vital appointments. Menders Needed We are looking for a mender on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. You will be handling 4 items per month per person. This involves general mending from hemming of skirts and pants No zippers. Sewing machine provided or you take items home to mend. Video Lecture Black Plague: The World’s Most Devastating Plague Join us on Friday mornings at 10:15 a.m. August 12th - October 28th (12 weeks). In the late 1340s, a plague shook medieval Europe to its core. The bacterial disease known to us as the Black Death swept westward across the continent, leaving a path of destruction from Crimea and Constantinople to Italy, France, Spain, and ultimately most of Europe, traveling as far west as England and Iceland. Within these locations, the plague killed up to 50% of the population in less than 10 years—a staggering 75 million dead. The cost for the class is $15.00 per person. Knitting Workshop for Everyone We are offering a knitting workshop with Doreen Forcier on Thursday afternoon. This class is for knitters of all levels. You are required to bring your own knitting supplies. Early Stage Memory Loss Group Forming In September, a group for people with early stage memory loss is forming at the Middleton Senior Center. This group is open to all ages and will meet on Wednesday mornings. The 90-minute sessions will include group/individual brain games, time for socialization and gentle exercise.
