If you would like to join us for lunch before the perfor- mance, please make your reservation by noon on Friday, December 13th. All other afternoon activities are cancelled on Monday, December 16th. See Page 3 for detailed menus for both lunches. Ombudsman Program Join us on Tuesday, December 17th, at 1:00 p.m. for a presentation about the State of Wisconsin Ombudsman Program. The word ombudsman means to advocate or help. An om- budsman works with individuals and their families to protect and promote the rights of long term care consumers. We invite you to come and learn about the Ombudsman Pro- gram – it could make a positive difference in yours or a loved one’s life. You MUST contact the Senior Center the day before you wish to use this valuable service. There is a minimal charge each way for the ride. These times are tentative and may vary de- pending on the route and number of people who participate. Meals are served at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. The cost of each meal is $7.50. For diners over age 60, please donate what you can afford. Salad Alternative We offer cold salads as an alternative to the regular Tuesday meal at the dining center ONLY. December 3rd Chef Salad Shredded lettuce, ham, turkey, egg, cheese and assorted fresh vegetables. Your choice of dressing. December 10th Crunchy Chicken Salad Mixed salad with egg slices, diced chicken, celery, mayonnaise, water chestnuts, pickle relish pimientos and pecans. Mayonnaise dressing is on salad. December 17th Taco Salad Lettuce, meat (beef or chicken), cheese, tomato, onions, tostado chips. Salsa and sour cream on the side. Vegetarian Option We offer a vegetarian option to our lunch menu. Holiday Menus Monday, December 16th Cheese Tortellini in Marinara Sauce, Vegetables, Fruit Cup and a Brownie. Musical Entertainment at 1:00 p.m. by the Retro Swing Band. Friday, December 20th Buffet ham, Au gratin potatoes, glazed baby car- rots, chunky applesauce, dinner roll and a Christmas Cookie. Piano Entertainment at 12:30 p.m. by Robert Auerbach. Yes, You Can Join Us! If you are age 55 or older, you can participate in the programs at the Middleton Senior Center. You do not have to live in the City of Middleton to join us, and there is no membership fee. There may be a residency requirement for certain services including case management services, transportation and Meals on Wheels. Senior Center Closed A reminder that the Middleton Senior Center will be closed on the following days for the up- coming holidays. Diabetic Foot Care Diabetic Foot Care cost is $28.00 per visit. This service is offered each month at the Middleton Senior Center. Contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373 for an appointment. Blood Pressure Screening You may have your Blood Pressure checked on the first Tuesday of each month. This month a nurse will be at the Middleton Senior Center on Tuesday, December 3rd, at 12:30 p.m. No reservations necessary, just stop by. Scrabble Mondays Join us to play Scrabble at 9:30 a.m. on Mondays. We have several Scrabble boards, therefore, multiple games may be played. No reservations are needed you may just show up! Piano Entertainment Robert Auerbach is sharing his time and talent on the piano on Monday mornings. Fran Jeatran continues to share her time and talent by playing the piano each Wednesday, from 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Mah Jongg We have Mah Jongg on Tuesday afternoons at 12:30 p.m. If you have a Mah Jongg set please bring it, as the Senior Center only has one. New players welcome. Stitchers Join us on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. for knitting and crocheting in the living room. Newcomers are always welcome. Bring your projects and join this social group. Newsletter Assembly The January newsletter will be assembled on Tuesday, December 17th, at 8:30 a.m. for bulk mailing. Doors of the Senior Center will be open at 8:00 a.m. and assembly of the newsletter will not start until 8:30 a.m. Please consider helping out. Sing–Along Join us on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. for a Sing-Along with friends. Join us for some holiday spirit and join our sing-along on Tues- day, December 3rd and on Tuesday, December 17th, at 10:00 a.m. No auditions are required and sheet music is provided. Mary Duckwitz and Fran Jeatran lead this group as well as accompanying on the piano. New voices are always welcome. Mending Service Mending is offered on the second Tuesday and Thursday of each month. Appointments are required. Our volunteers will do simple mending and hemming they will not alter clothing with linings. You are al- lowed to bring two items per appointment. The next mending days are Tuesday, December 10th and Thursday, December 12th, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Make your appointment by calling 831-2373. BINGO BINGO will not meet in December due to the New Year’s Eve Holiday. It will resume on Tuesday, January 28th at 1:00 p.m. Essential Tremor Support Group The Essential Tremor Support group will not meet for the next few months. They will resume meeting on Wednesday, March 12th at 10:30 a.m. Sheila Aton will be the guest speaker. She is with the UW Pharmocology program and will update us on medi- cations. Caregiver Support Group The Middleton Senior Center offers a Caregiver Sup- port Group that meets on the second Thursday of each month. This month join them on Thursday, December 12th, at 1:00 p.m. Caregivers, as well as listeners, are welcome to join. Sober Today Group An open meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous meets every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome. Al-Anon Meeting Al-Anon is a meeting for friends and relatives of alco- holics. They meet each Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome to attend. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Program Join us on Wednesday, December 18th, at 10:30 a.m. to learn about hands only CPR. Writing Group The Writing Group will meet on Wednesday, December 11th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. This month’s assignment is to write about the best way to fall asleep, a good movie you have seen (theater or television) or which relative were you closest to and why? Please bring your writing to the class. New members are always welcome. Low Vision Support Group The Low Vision Support Group will meet on Thurs- day, December 12th, at 10:00 a.m. New members are always welcome. Middleton Jazz Every Thursday The Middleton Jazz band is continuing to play on Thursday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 at the Middleton Senior Center. Come out and enjoy the music or if you are feeling musical bring your instrument to join in. Reminiscing Group The Reminiscing Group meets the first and third Thursdays of each month at 10:00 a.m. They will meet on Thursday, December 5th and Thursday, December 19th, at 10:00 a.m. December Movie “Now You See Me” Join us on Friday, December 13th, at 12:30 p.m. to watch “Now You See Me”. “Now You See Me” follows three magicians and a mentalist, all at different points in their careers. J. Daniel Atlas (Eisenberg) is a rising star with plenty of street credibility. Merritt (Harrelson) is a once world reknowned mentalist trying to fight his way back after tax problems. Henley (Fisher) is J. Daniel’s former assistant trying to make a name for herself with daring escapes, and Jack Wilder (Franco) is a nobody who performs around town to hone his craft. After being mysteriously brought together, they join forces to become the magic act known as “The Four Horsemen” and wind up landing a gig in Las Vegas - which they close by helping a man from France rob his local bank of millions. There will be no meeting in January but will resume on Wednesday, February 5th at 10:00 a.m. The February book is Faithful Place by Tana French. De- tective Frank Mackey finds himself back in the dark tangle of relationships he left behind 22 years ago when the suitcase belonging to his first love, Rosie Daly, shows up behind a fireplace in a derelict house on Faithful Place. Both books are available from the South Central Library System in print, large print, downloadable epub and Spanish. Books R Us Books R Us will not meet in December. Men’s Group Presentations The Men’s group meets on the first and third Thurs- days of each month at 9:30 a.m. On Thursday, De- cember 5th, Mel Stark will give an overview about the AARP Driver Safety Classes. Then on Thursday, December 19th, Duane Riggert will host “A Show and Tell!” Each participant should bring something to explain a picture, souvenir, map, watch, book, model train, hobby example, whatever. It is IMPORTANT that everyone reviews their policy each year - as changes are made to each plan each year. All Medi- care beneficiaries have the option to make enroll- ment changes in their prescription drug plans until December 7th, 2013. You may set up an individual appointment with a volunteer to assist you in making your decision. You must make an appointment no walk-ins please. To schedule an appointment call 831-2373. Energy Assistance Do you need help with energy bills? A representa- tive from Energy Services will be at the Middleton Senior Center on Wednesday, December 18th, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Appointments are neces- sary. Retro Swing Band Performs Holiday Musical Program The Middleton Senior Center will host the Retro Swing Band on Monday, December 16th, at 1:00 p.m. This popular band performs once a year at the Middleton Senior Center - stop by and enjoy an afternoon of music. All afternoon activities are cancelled for that day. Holiday Meal and Piano Cafe We will celebrate on Friday, December 20th, with a special Holiday Meal and entertainment by Robert Auerbach on piano. Inclement Weather Reminder In the event the Middleton-Cross Plains School District closes schools due to bad weather, the Middleton Senior Center will also be closed. Meals on Wheels will not be delivered and meals will not be served at the Middleton Senior Center on these days. The cancelled meal will be served the next day. All classes, activities and programs are cancelled. Contact the Senior Center regarding rescheduled or make up programs. Learn to use the library’s free eBook service, Wisconsin’s Digital Library, at a personalized eBook training. The free sessions at the Middleton Senior Center are available for all levels of eReader users. Appointments are on Monday afternoon, December 9th. You may make your appointment by calling 831-2373. Contact Laura at 831-2373 for more information. Strength & Flexibility January Classes Strength & Flexibility continues in the new year. This movement class for people at all fitness levels. Wednesdays, 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. January 8th - February 26th And/Or Fridays, 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. January 10th - February 28th These are 8-week classes, and the cost is $55.00 for one class or $90.00 for both. Sign up by calling the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373. Video Lecture From Monet to Van Gogh: A History of Impressionism The Video Lecture classes resume in January. Join us on Friday mornings at 10:15 a.m. January 10th - March 28th, for this 12 week class to learn about the Impressionist Artists. They appeared in a period of upheaval. They saw the rebuilding of Paris, the rise of industrialism, the ruin of the Franco-Prussian war. They displayed their startling and shocking works in a series of exhibitions from 1874 to 1886. And by the 1890s, this “loose coalition” of artists who rebelled against the formality of the French Academy had created the most famous artistic movement in history. “They” were the Impressionists, and Profes- sor Brettell is your expert curator and guide to a movement that created a new, intensely personal vision of the world. Cost of this class is $15.00. If you make your payment by December 15th, we can order you the official guidebook. Painting with Oil Pastels Art Class Join us for this class on Monday afternoons, February 10th - March 17th, 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. You will learn about the materials, and a variety of techniques used with Oil Pastels. We will complete several small paintings in this class. This class is for beginner and intermediate students alike. A list of supplies will be sent to you when you register. The cost is $126.00 for six classes. Call 831-2373 to make your reservation. Temperature Regulations In accordance with the City of Middleton’s Sustainable City Plan dated November 2010, a policy was established for temperature controls in normally occupied spaces of all municipal build- ings. The policy goal is to maintain a reasonably comfortable, productive work environment while balancing the need to economize and use energy resources wisely. Temperatures are established based on national standards that have been found to be comfortable for most people who are dressed appropriately for the season. Heating will be to 68 degrees. Cooling will be to 78 degrees. Temperature will vary throughout the day and room to room. Participants should dress for their comfort, one suggestion is layers. ---PAGE BREAK--- 11 d e c e m b e r 2 0 1 3 Volunteer Opportunities RSVP Driver Escorts: Volunteers to help give rides to Seniors to medical appointments, the library, Middleton Outreach and Senior Center to name a few. This Guide is a valuable and practical reference tool for aging adult services in Dane County. Included is an abundance of information, support systems, helpful organizations and businesses, retirement communi- ties, useful articles, referral sources, home health agencies, senior housing facilities, as well as programs pertaining to adults 50+. However, due to the limited space and our programs, there may be times when the equipment is unavailable due to other activities. For example, when events are scheduled in the Depot room, such as the video lecture or movies, the exercise equipment may not be used. In addition, the Lower Level is locked at 4:00 p.m. for security purposes.
