It is IMPORTANT that everyone reviews their policy each year - as changes are made to each plan each year. All Medicare beneficiaries have the option to make enrollment changes in their prescription drug plans from October 15th – December 7th, 2016. You may set up an individual appointment with a Middleton Senior Center volunteer to assist you in making your decision. Appointment times vary, call 831-2373, to schedule. Please make an appointment no walk-ins. Advanced Planning Your Funeral One of the greatest gifts you can give your family is to pre-plan your funeral. This will allow for your family and loved ones to be focused on what’s most important to each other and their journey through grief into healing. Advance planning allows you to resolve your most personal matters with a clear mind, in a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. Join us on Tuesday, October 18th, at 1:00 p.m. for a presentation by Deb Wood of Cress Funeral Services to learn about funeral planning and options. Come for lunch at 11:30 a.m. and stay for the program. The Middleton Senior Center meal site is part of Dane County Human Services. Bus Schedule: The Middleton Senior Center offers a number of different transportation options to Middleton residents each week. You MUST contact the Senior Center the day before you wish to use this valuable service. Transportation to the meal site and local grocery shopping is by donation. The suggested donation is $1.00 round trip to the meal site and the suggested donation for local grocery shopping is $2.00 round trip. The fee is based upon your ability to donate. No one will be denied rides for these purposes. These times are tentative and may vary depending on the route and number of people who participate. Meals are served at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. The cost of each meal is $7.50. Home Delivered Meals (Meals on Wheels) are available for home-bound seniors Diners over age 60, please donate what you can afford. For further information contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373. Salad Alternative We offer cold salads as an alternative to the regular Tuesday meal at the dining center ONLY. October 4th Garden Salad Mixed greens with shredded lettuce, cheese, garbanzo beans, cucumbers, broccoli, diced tomato and peas. Your choice of dressing. October 11th Chicken Ranch Salad Mixed greens and lettuce, diced chicken, crumbled bacon, cucumbers, diced tomatoes, peas, purple onion. Served with Ranch Dressing. October 18th Chef Salad Shredded lettuce, ham, turkey, cheese, tomato wedges, shredded carrots, radishes, diced cucumbers. Your choice of dressing. October 25th Taco Salad Lettuce, meat (beef), cheese, diced tomatoes, diced onion, salsa, sour cream and tostado chips. Vegetarian Option We offer a vegetarian option to our lunch menu. For details contact Ted at 831-2373. Bakery Items Mondays The Middleton Senior Center receives bakery items on Mondays ONLY at approximately 10:30 a.m. from Clasen’s. Scrabble Mondays Join us to play Scrabble at 9:00 a.m. on Mondays. We have several Scrabble boards; therefore, multiple games may be played. No reservations are needed you may just show up! Cribbage Players We have a Cribbage group that plays on Monday mornings at 9:30 a.m. They are always looking for additional players. We have the cribbage boards, you can just show up. Dining Center Information All menu items are prepared in kitchens that are not allergen-free. We cannot guarantee that food allergens will not be transferred through cross- contact. Your Input is Needed 2016 Case Management Survey Dane County Department of Human Services is administering the Case Management Satisfactory Survey for us again this year. Randomly selected seniors who received Case Management Services this year (January thru August 2016) will be receiving a survey in the mail in early October. If you receive a survey, please take a few minutes to complete it and return the survey in the enclosed self-addressed, stamped envelope. Dane County Aging Plan Survey Every three years, the Area Agency on Aging of Dane County’s Board of Directors is required to submit a plan identifying well-defined goals in serving senior adults. The focus areas include: Caregiver Services, Dementia Services, Elder Justice, Healthy Aging, and Senior Nutrition. The goals are being drafted by workgroups and will be posted online for your input in October. Watch for the Survey Monkey link to be listed in next month’s newsletter. Participants play the games, primarily bowling, but other games as well, on Mondays at 12:30 p.m. No need to sign up, just show up. Monday Bridge Bridge on Mondays is now open to anyone who wishes to play. Please arrive by 12:30 p.m. to begin play at 12:45 p.m. Open Cards Open Cards is for people that have a group of people who play cards together, however, they need a location to play. You may come to the Middleton Senior Center with your group on Thursdays and Fridays at 12:30 p.m. Please check at the front desk for an available location. Piano Entertainment Robert Auerbach entertains us with his talented piano skills on Mondays 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Feel free to come and enjoy his music. Foot Care Home Health United and the Middleton Senior Center offer foot care several times each month. The cost of Foot Care is $20.00. For an appointment contact 831-2373. Diabetic Foot Care We offer Diabetic Foot Care twice a month. The cost is $28.00 per visit. Contact the Middleton Senior Center, at 831-2373, for an appointment. Blood Pressure Screening Blood Pressure screening takes place on the first Tuesday of each month at 12:30 p.m. This month it will be on Tuesday, October 4th, at 12:30 p.m. Sing–Along Join us on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. for a Sing-Along with friends. Singing takes place on Tuesday, October 4th and Tuesday, October 18th, at 10:00 a.m. Sheet music is provided. Mary Duckwitz and Fran Jeatran lead this group as well as accompanying on the piano. New voices welcome. Wood Carving Drop In We have a talented group of wood carvers that get together on Tuesday mornings 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. They bring their own projects and share with each other their creative skills and experience. Anyone is welcome to join them any time. Mah Jongg Mah Jongg is played on Tuesday afternoons* at 12:30 p.m. If you would like to join them, just show up. If you have a Mah Jongg set, please bring it. We have all levels of players. New players are welcome. You MUST bring your own Mah Jongg card. * Please note this group does not play at the Middleton Senior Center on the last Tuesday of the month. Location and Timing is Everything The Middleton Senior Center schedules 90+ programs, activities and events every week. Most are listed in the calendar, but not necessarily all of them. We carefully consider locations and timing when scheduling each activity. Remember that your activity is not the only program at the Middleton Senior Center. Please be considerate of other groups when attending programs. The room your activity is in may be in use before or after your event. If you arrive early or wish to stay later, please utilize one of the common areas or comfortable living rooms during these times. The Senior Center reserves the right to relocate, postpone or cancel any program to accommodate other special events or programs. Each event is important and we want you to have a positive experience at the Middleton Senior Center. Your cooperation and understanding is greatly appreciated. Newcomers are always welcome. Bring your projects and join this social group. Spanish You can boost your brain power at any age and learning Spanish can do this. Ellen Soto teaches at several levels. This is a low stress group that accepts new members at any point. You may improve your mental health by meeting new friends, learning something new, and having fun. A new section begins each month and runs for four weeks. Coffee & The Economy Shannon Riley, of Edward Jones Investments, will host a program on the second Tuesday of each month, at 9:00 a.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. Join him on Tuesday, October 11th, at 9:00 a.m. for coffee, pastries and a general discussion about financial issues. This month’s topic is Outlook and Opportunities: Prepping Your Portfolio. Mending Service Mending is offered on the second Tuesday and Thursday of each month. This month it will be on Tuesday, October 11th and Thursday, October 13th, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. You are allowed to bring two items per appointment. You must make an appointment by calling 831-2373. October Movie “Hello, My Name is Doris” Join us for an afternoon movie on Friday, October 14th, at 12:30 p.m. to watch “Hello, My Name is Doris”. Join us on Tuesday, October 25th, at 1:00 p.m. Come for lunch at 11:30 a.m. and stay for BINGO. Al-Anon Meeting Al-Anon is a meeting for friends and relatives of alcoholics. They meet each Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level of the Middleton Senior Center. Anyone is welcome to attend. They will meet at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 12th. This month Sheila Aton, Pharm D. (Senior Clinical Pharmacist, University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics) will review the different types of medications used to help manage ET. Mystery Book Club The Mystery Book Club will meet on Wednesday, October 5th, at 10:00 a.m. to discuss A Trouble of Fools, by Linda Barnes. It’s the kind of case that has “no” written all over it. But ex-cop Carlotta Carlyle has a Private Investigator license getting moldy from disuse, so she takes on the search for a little old lady’s missing brother. After all, how much trouble could an aging cabbie get into? Plenty, Carlotta learns, as she uncovers a scam of laundered money and drug running, all mixed together in that dangerously powerful brew known as Boston-Irish politics. The book for Wednesday, November 2nd, will be A Superior Death, by Nevada Barr. Park ranger Anna Pigeon returns, in a mystery that unfolds in and around Lake Superior, in whose chilling depths sunken treasure comes with a deadly price. A Superior Death is a passionate, atmospheric page- turner. Books are available from the South Central Library System in print, large print, downloadable epub. New members are welcome. Women Embracing Change Group This group of women meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. This women only group meets to discuss the changes we go through as we age. Pat Ball facilitates on topics that include, physical, emotional and changes as well as a variety of other issues. Please join us on Wednesday, October 12th, at 10:30 a.m. and on Wednesday, October 26th, at 10:30 a.m. Writing Group The Middleton Senior Center has a thriving group of writers that meets on the second Wednesday of each month. This month they will meet on Wednesday, October 12th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Middleton Library. This is a group of creative seniors that write about a variety of topics in a variety of writing styles. Each month a different member decides on the topics and styles of writing. Participants bring their homework to share with the class. Choose one of the following to write about: 1. Write about anything you want to write about. 2. Take this sentence, and build a story around it. “Be patient towards all that is unsolved in your heart.” 3. Build a story around Marge Piercy’s poem “The Bonsai Tree”. Contact Laura, 831-2373, if you need a copy of the poem. New members are always welcome. Euchre Join us for Euchre on Wednesday afternoons at 1:00 p.m. Anyone is welcome to join. TOPS Meetings The Middleton Senior Center now has a TOPS program. They meet on Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Taking Pounds Off Sensibly (TOPS) is a weight loss program based on members helping and supporting each other. It focuses on making small, steady lifestyle changes that provide lasting weight loss and better health. Yearly membership is $32.00. They meet once a week for a short business meeting, a weigh-in and a topic of discussion. Meetings are one hour. At no time are individual weights ever discussed during the meeting. You may sign up by calling at 831-2373, or simply show up. Middleton Jazz Every Thursday Middleton Jazz is a diverse group of musicians who simply love to create music. They play/practice at the Middleton Senior Center every Thursday morning, 9:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m. They play a variety of songs but specialize in New Orleans jazz. Gadget Guru Our Gadget Guru is at the Middleton Senior Center on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month to assist you with your gadgets. If you need a little help, Dave will be available at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 13th and Thursday, October 27th. Books R Us Books R Us meets on the fourth Thursday of each month. This month they will meet on Thursday, October 27th, at 10:00 a.m. to discuss A Lucky Life Interrupted by Tom Brokaw. Tom Brokaw has led a fortunate life, with a strong marriage and family, many friends, and a brilliant journalism career culminating in his twenty-two years as anchor of the NBC News and as bestselling author. But in the summer of 2013, when back pain led him to the doctors at the Mayo Clinic, his run of good luck was interrupted. He received shocking news: He had multiple myeloma, a treatable but incurable blood cancer. Friends had always referred to Brokaw’s “lucky star,” but as he writes in this inspiring memoir, “Turns out that star has a dimmer switch.” Caregiver Support Group The Middleton Senior Center offers a Caregiver Support Group that meets on the second Thursday of each month. This month join them on Thursday, October 13th, at 1:00 p.m. Caregivers, as well as listeners, are welcome to join. Rummikub A group has started playing Rummikub on Friday mornings at 9:00 a.m. This is a tile game based on Mah Jongg and Rummy. New members welcome. Nimble Fingers Nimble Fingers is a group of ladies that sew, knit and crochet for charity. They meet the first and third Thursdays of the month at 12:30 p.m. The other Thursdays are spent on sewing projects. We have an ongoing craft sale at the Middleton Senior Center. No need for reservations or to sign-up in advance. You may simply show up to one of their events. They will begin the month by attending the Capital Chordsman concert at the Middleton Performing Arts Center on Saturday, October 1st, at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $10.00, General Admission, are available on the day of show at the Performing Arts Center. Meet in the PAC lobby at 1:45 p.m. Next, is breakfast and planning on Wednesday, October 5th, at 9:15 a.m. at Hy-Vee, 675 S Whitney Way. Then on Wednesday, October 19th, at 9:00 a.m. meet at the Middleton Senior Center to carpool for Fall Foliage viewing towards New Glarus, Mt. Horeb, and Belleville. Lunch and a stop at an apple orchard are planned. Finally, join them on Monday, October 31st, at 11:00 a.m. at the Middleton Senior Center to carpool to the Base Camp in Mazomanie for lunch. Paper Crafting with Judy Join us on Friday, October 7th, at 1:00 p.m. for a fun afternoon of card-making and paper crafting. Let your creative side shine through with the use of embellishments and pretty papers. All supplies are furnished as well as envelopes and inserts for four cards. Car Weatherization The Middleton Police Department, Middleton Ford and the Middleton Senior Center invite you to the annual Car Weatherization Day on Saturday, October 8th, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Middleton Ford. Reservations are necessary, contact the Middleton Senior Center at 831-2373. Drawing and Painting Workshop Mary McCormick-Wixom will teach Drawing and Painting Workshops this fall. They meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month. This month they will meet on Wednesday, October 5th and Wednesday, October 19th, at 10:00 a.m. at the Middleton Senior Center. This group is open to all ages. The 90-minute sessions will include individual and group brain games, music, gentle exercise and time for socialization. Medicare Part D Open Enrollment Medicare Part D is the federal prescription drug benefit for Medicare beneficiaries. It is IMPORTANT that everyone reviews their policy each year - as changes are made to each plan each year. All Medicare beneficiaries have the option to make enrollment changes in their prescription drug plans from October 15th – December 7th, 2016. You may set up an individual appointment with a Middleton Senior Center volunteer to assist you in making your decision. Appointment times vary, call 831-2373 to schedule. Balance Walking Class is to improve coordination, balance, posture, and breathing. It is lower impact walking on your body and joints than walking alone. The poles assist you in reducing the impact and distribute weight from your lower back, hips, knees, and ankles to the upper body. Join us on Thursday mornings at 10:00 a.m. October 27th - December 22nd, at the Middleton Senior Center. Poles will be provide. Cost is $40.00 per person for the 8-week class. Scarf Dyeing Class Judy Arawinko will be teaching a scarf dyeing class at the Middleton Senior Center on Monday, October 31st, at 1:00 p.m. Cost is just $16.00 and you will make a scarf with your own design to keep or give as a gift. Craft Fair The Middleton Senior Center is hosting a Craft Fair on Friday, November 4th, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 5th, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Senior craft vendors will be selling a variety of handmade items - photograph note cards, tote bags, and knitted, sewn and crocheted items. Driver Escorts Volunteers are needed to provide rides to seniors for medical appointments. The schedule is flexible and volunteers designate when they are available to drive. Mileage is reimbursed.
