When anthropology professor Gideon Oliver is offered a teaching fellowship at US military bases in Germany, Sicily, Spain, and Holland, he wastes no time accepting. Stimulating courses to teach, a decent stipend, all expenses paid, plenty of interesting European travel . . . What’s not to like? It does not take him long to find out. On his first night, he is forced to fend off two desperate, black- clad men who have invaded his Heidelberg hotel room with intent to kill. There are a few trivial de- tails that the recruiting agency forgot to mention— such as the fact that the two previous holders of the fellowship both met with mysterious ends. From there, it is all downhill. The Wednesday, December 3rd, selection is Rest You Merry, by Charlotte MacLeod. Each December, the faculty of Balaclava Agricultural College goes wild with Christmas lights. The entire campus glit- ters with holiday decorations, save for one dark spot: the home of professor Peter Shandy. But after years of resisting the Illumination festival, Shandy snaps, installing a million-watt display of flashing lights and blaring music perfectly calculated to drive his neigh- bors mad. The horticulturist flees town, planning to spend Christmas on a tramp steamer, but soon feels guilty about his prank and returns home to find his Christmas lights extinguished, and a dead librarian in his living room. Wishing to avoid a scandal, the school’s head asks Shandy to investigate the matter quietly. After all, Christmas is big business, and the town needs the cash infusion provided by the Illumination. As Peter Shandy will soon find, though, there is a dark side to even the whitest of white Christmases. Both books are available from the South Central Li- brary System in print, large print, downloadable epub. ---PAGE BREAK--- 9 n o v e m b e r 2 0 1 4 Books R Us Books R Us will meet one week earlier, due to the the Thanksgiving holiday, on Thursday, November 20th, at 10:00 a.m. to discuss The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion. Mrs. Sookie Poole of Point Clear, Alabama, has just married off the last of her daughters and is looking forward to relaxing and perhaps traveling with her husband, Earle. The only thing left to contend with is her mother, the formi- dable Lenore Simmons Krackenberry. Lenore may be a lot of fun for other people, but is, for the most part, an overbearing presence for her daughter. Then one day, quite by accident, Sookie discovers a secret about her mother’s past that knocks her for a loop and suddenly calls into question everything she ever thought she knew about herself, her family, and her future.
