All City Food Drive Saturday, November 1 ---PAGE BREAK--- 2 Marysville Parks & Recreation • Autumn 2014 Hundreds of splash-happy youngsters and families packed Comeford Park on June 26 to enjoy a spectacular grand opening of the new Marysville Spray Park, while others lounged around on blankets with coolers and picnic baskets, bringing new vitality and healthy living into the downtown. The spray park is the latest investment back into Marysville that myself and other City leaders hope will draw more people downtown to shop, eat and recreate, establish a more active and vibrant city scene, and contribute to a renewed “sense of community” that we are striving to create with your help. The park opening serves as a reminder that downtown-waterfront revi- talization is still at the forefront of long-term plans for our community. We’re seeing signs of progress on both the economic and the social side of revitalization, and we’re enthusiastic about the times ahead. New economic development activity is creating more prosperity for our downtown business district. Walgreens has opened its doors at State Avenue and Fourth Street, while Coastal Community Bank will con- struct its newest branch soon where the old Royal Fork/Jumbo Buffet building now stands, on the southwest corner of State and Fourth. This new commercial building activity will complement the visually appealing renovations that have included The Expresso Connection/Silver Cup Coffee complex at Fifth and State, the Verizon/NW Plus Credit Union building at Third and State, and general façade improvements along Third. It’s important to have a growing downtown business district that embodies a certain character and look that is unique unto itself. Not only do people make a business district look more vital; they in turn attract more activity since people are drawn to bustling, lively places. Moving forward, our downtown-waterfront plans envision mixed-use projects that create more 24/7 urban liv- ing with shops, restaurants, boutiques and public outdoor spaces that encourage visitors to congregate outdoors in leisure. Pedestrian improvements for better “walkability” is a vital component in these plans. Whether strolling in Com- eford Park, browsing the shops along Third Street or walking down to Ebey Waterfront Park, downtown can be best experienced on foot with the right amenities in place, for example, the benches, banners and planters along Third. Walking opportunities will also extend to the planned Qwuloolt interpretive trail along Ebey waterfront from the park into the Tulalip Tribes’ Qwuloolt estuary restoration project area. This will enable us to take advantage of water recreation and ecotourism opportunities, giving visitors yet more reasons to come downtown, spend time, and explore. When it comes to developing a more welcoming downtown, safety is another important aspect. Downtown’s desig- nated “Stay Out of Drug Area” (First north to Ninth Street and from Ash Avenue along I-5 east to Alder) is work- ing as planned thanks to increased proactive police presence and patrols, deterring drug-related criminal activity, reducing aggressive panhandling and responding to other suspicious behavior that has concerned business owners, residents and visitors. Additionally, the Community Development and other departments have worked with Police to address code enforcement issues at properties downtown known to attract and harbor illicit activity. People want a safer, cleaner and more inviting downtown. Downtown is also the site for many upcoming events through the end of the year, including the Marysville Street Festival, Touch-A-Truck at Asbery Field, Autumn Craft Show, Order Up Gift Show and Multicultural Fair at Com- eford Park and the Ken Baxter Community Center, and the for the Holidays and Electric Lights Parade in December. These annual events touch the lives of many residents and visitors, create yet more enjoyable activ- ity downtown, and fall in place with our vision to build a “community within a community” and culture unique to downtown. ~ Jon Nehring, Mayor (360) 363-8400 • marysvillewa.gov MAYOR’S MESSAGE ---PAGE BREAK--- (360) 363-8400 • marysvillewa.gov 3 Like us for last minute calendar entries and announcements Youth Arts & Sports & Adult Arts & Athletics, Fitness & Adult Adventures & Tours Adventures & Tours Seniors Fitness & Cedarcrest Golf Course Golf Deals, Rental Facilities Rent a Parks Find a Park Marysville has 447 acres of parks and 21 miles of trails in its park system inventory.
