City Scene October 2017 Belmark HQ is newest Pride of Marysville An incredible makeover that transformed a longtime neighborhood eyesore into one of the city’s most attractive businesses earned the 2017 Pride of Marysville Neighborhood Improvement Award for Best Business. Belmark Properties owner Aaron Metcalf received the award from Mayor Jon Nehring at the Sept. 11 City Council meeting. In 2016, Belmark bought the abandoned building and property at 12409 State Ave. and built its new offices there, opening in February 2017. A Marysville business since 1975, Belmark had two previous locations in town. Mayor Nehring created the Pride of Marysville awards in 2012 to publicly honor property owners who have done exceptional work in improving their home or business properties. These attractive properties reflect well on our community, improving Marysville’s image for residents and visitors. Proactive policing paying off, crime rates continue to decrease The City of Marysville continues to make good progress in the fight against crime. Police Chief Rick Smith recently reported that crime cases overall were down five percent compared with the same time last year. For the categories shown at left, the progress is remarkable. In large part due to proactive policing efforts, criminals are learning that Marysville is not a good place for them to be. “Our police department has consistently demonstrated the ability to develop and execute effective crime reduction strategies when given the resources to do so,” Mayor Nehring said. “Now we plan to continue to focus these efforts on the drug issues and related crimes that threaten Marysville today. It’s clear that we must redouble our efforts to combat the growing opioid abuse problem and reclaim our community.” Hiring more police officers is a key component of the city’s crime reduction emphasis. The city has hired six new officers so far this year. In a very competitive law enforcement hiring environment, the city stepped up recruitment efforts and more new hires are on the way. What can you do? Never leave your car running and unattended with the key inside, even briefly just to warm it up. Thieves can take your car and/or items inside, which might include a house key, garage door opener, spare key to another family vehicle, and personal information from registration and insurance cards—inviting more criminal activity.
