1049 State Ave. * Marysville, Washington 98270 * (360) 363-8000 * web: marysvillewa.gov Office of the Mayor News Release Contact: Doug Buell, Community Information Officer Office: (360) 363-8086 Cell: (425) 754-3641 Email: [EMAIL REDACTED] May 17, 2012 Mayor honors Jackman as Volunteer of the Month for her work teaching young children to read their way toward success MARYSVILLE – Mayor Jon Nehring is pleased to honor Linda Jackman as Volunteer of the Month for April for her passion helping elementary school children learn to read. Jackman has volunteered an hour a day in Liberty Elementary Teacher Betsy Guerra’s first-grade class for the past three years. “Linda shares her love of literature by reading with her young students, and the children love her,” said the Mayor at the May 14 City Council meeting where Jackman was honored. She has built a rapport with many children such that she is now following one of Guerra’s students to second grade, where she continues to work with him. “At the early elementary school level, the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children, and with them,” says Nehring. “That is the real value that Linda brings through her volunteer work. She is not only helping inspire generations to achieve their potential, but instilling a love of reading that will better prepare them for the rest of their school days ahead, and in life.” Jackman also donates school supplies to the classroom and has bought Highlight Magazine subscriptions for all first, second and third-grade classes at Liberty. “The self-less and dedicated service that Linda is providing make her not only an asset to Liberty Elementary and its students and teachers, but an inspiration to the entire community,” Nehring says.
