The Ebey Waterfront Trail has been awarded funding support from two different state programs this year as a regional priority for the community. The new trail will become a part of the Qwuloolt Restoration project, which has been recognized as the state’s second-largest estuary restoration project behind the Nisqually Basin Restoration Project near Olympia. The Ebey Waterfront Trail project will give the Marysville community a highly anticipated trail system with access to the Tulalip Tribes’ unique 340-acre restoration project, which is east of the city’s Waste Water Treatment Plant and borders Ebey Slough. As part of the Qwuloolt project, crews will construct 1.8 miles of new trail that will connect two city-owned parks and trailhead facilities. The waterfront trail project includes development of existing infrastructure into an improved and accessible pedestrian trail system on each side of the restoration project. Project funding will support paving and related improvements for more than 9,000 linear feet of trail system, and will include site furnishing support, interpretive opportunities and viewpoints. The main trailheads will be located at Ebey Waterfront Park and Harborview Park. Funds for the trail were allocated from the recent legislative Capital Budget at a level of $500,000; an additional $343,000 will be provided by the Aquatic Land Enhancement Account (ALEA), and Marysville will contribute funding to complete the project in 2016. Marysville residents will be able to enjoy new access to Ebey Slough once the 12-foot-wide trail is complete, and will find opportunities to enjoy new recreational activities – including hiking, bird-watching, interpretive education, shoreline fishing and wildlife viewing. The restored Qwuloolt estuary will also provide new non-motorized boating and paddling opportunities, and access to a natural oasis and wildlife area that hasn’t been accessible for more than 100 years. The new trail will include two interpretive areas on each side of the breached levee that will provide information about historic uses and environmental insight into the area. The environmental and scientific communities will also have access to the site as they monitor both tidal influence impacts and habitat management. We have an exciting few months ahead of us as construction on the trail and restoration work kicks off late this summer. We expect completion of the new waterfront trail and related improvements by the spring of 2016. 2 New Ebey waterfront trail into Qwuloolt Estuary Restoration project earns state funding Marysville Parks & Recreation • Fall/Winter 2015 A Walk of Strength will mark one year since Oct. 24, 2014 at MPHS Students, staff, first responders and community members are invited to - A Walk of Strength.
