Bussiere Chief of Police PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 22, 2012 CONTACT: Sgt. David Chick (207) 513-3137, ext. 3303 After weekday/daytime business hours contact the Watch Commander ext. 3324 ADVISE MOTORISTS TO USE ALTERNATE TRAVEL ROUTE On Sunday (June 24th there will be an event (“Bands On The Run”) occurring throughout the cities of Lewiston and Auburn which incorporates a 13 mile half-marathon run coursing along both sides of the Androscoggin River, and a 5k road race which will have a number of the streets in the downtown area blocked off for a period of time up to at least 2 hours, beginning around 8:30 a.m.. This event will impact upon all the bridges connecting the cities. The Bernard Lown Peace Bridge (New Auburn) will be completely closed off to traffic from around 8:15 a.m. until around 9:30 a.m.. Lincoln St will remain closed until around 10:30 a.m.. For about an hour, between 9:30 – 10:30 a.m., both Lisbon St and Canal St will be closed off to traffic (the stretch from Main St to Cedar St). POLICE ARE URGING MOTORISTS TO PLAN AHEAD AND SEEK TO USE ALTERNATE ROUTES… The following suggestions are being made: o Vehicles seeking to travel from Main St (Rte.202) to Lisbon St (Rte.196) should either use Russell St (outer Main St) or Sabattus St (Rte.126 – downtown). o Vehicles seeking to enter Lewiston from Auburn should use either the Longley Memorial Bridge (Rte.202) or the Veterans’ Memorial Bridge (Center St – Rte.4), and should avoid using the Bernard Lown Peace Bridge coming from New Auburn. o Vehicles traveling on Lisbon St (Rte.196) toward downtown Main St (Rte.202) will be re-routed into neighborhoods, and may encounter delays. Pass-through motorists should by-pass this area by using East Ave to Webster St to Sabattus St (Rte.126). This will greatly reduce potential frustration caused by traffic jam and back-up, and increase the safety for this pedestrian event occurring in our community. Reduce speeds, and be mindful of lane reductions being coned to accommodate the pedestrian runners!
