To: Distribution From: Rob Stalford Subject: Solid Waste Facility Schedule – Spring 2014 Date: March 18, 2014 The following information will be placed in the following communication pieces: • the City’s Web site • the Sun-Journal insert HOLIDAYS THE FACILITY IS CLOSED April 2014 – Patriot’s Day The Solid Waste & Recycling Facility will be closed on Monday, April 21, 2014, in honor of the Patriot’s Day holiday. Trash & Recyclables will be collected as usual on that day and need to be curbside by 7:00 AM. The Solid Waste & Recycling Facility will re- open on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, from 7:15 AM to 2:45 PM. May 2014 – Memorial Day Due to the celebration of the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 26th, the Solid Waste Facility will be closed. Trash & Recyclable Materials will be collected as usual on that day and need to be curbside by 7:00 AM. The Solid Waste Facility will re-open on Tuesday, May 27th, 2014, from 7:15 AM to 2:45 PM. Summer Hours - 2014 Beginning on Saturday, May 10, 2014, the Solid Waste Facility will provide Extended Hours through the summer months, on Saturdays. The Solid Waste Facility summer hours are 7:15am to 2:45pm, weekdays, and 8:00am to 3:00pm on Saturdays. The summer hours will remain in effect through October 2014. Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Depot (note - New Column) Founded in the Fall of 2005, the permanent HHW Depot is located at Lewiston’s Solid Waste Facility. This Depot will be open to the residents of Lewiston beginning Saturday, May 3rd through November 15th, on the FIRST AND THIRD SATURDAY of those months, ONLY. Visit www.avcog.org or call AVCOG at 783-9186 for additional details concerning the depot. Examples of waste, which WILL be accepted at the HHW Depot include – • oil based paint • pesticides • anti-freeze • old pool chemicals • waste gasoline & fuels • solvent based cleaners • for a more complete list, visit the Environmental Depot’s web site - envdepot.com Examples of waste, which WILL NOT be accepted at the HHW Depot include – ---PAGE BREAK--- • ammunition, ordinance, explosives (contact the Maine State Police for info. on disposal) • prescription medication • biological and/or infectious waste • compressed gas cylinders If you are in doubt / have questions, please check the AVCOG website (www.avcog.org) or give them a call at 783-9186. The HHW Depot is open to residents ONLY and cannot accept Hazardous Waste generated from businesses or other commercial firms. Lewiston residents may dispose of 2 units (up to 10 gal. of liquid, 40 lbs. of solid waste material or a combination of liquid & solid waste) at no cost. Quantities, which exceed this amount will be charged $28.50 per unit. Residents can pay the contractor directly – cash or check. The contractor cannot accept credit cards. Single Stream Recycling is Doing Very Well in Lewiston – (note - New Column) This service, introduced in Lewiston in July 2011, has greatly improved the convenience of recycling your household waste items – even MORE materials can be recycled – o plastic bottles & containers - #1 - #7 plastic o glass bottles & jars – clear AND colored glass o hard cover books o rigid plastic – 5 gal. buckets, milk & soda crates, children’s small rigid pools, etc. • no need to pre-sort recyclable material • this new program has reduced the cost of providing this City service • The MORE you recycle, the MORE WE ALL SAVE for trash collection and disposal services!
