Awards Presented To The City of Lewiston 2011 "Sustaining Community Award" from Coastal Enterprises Inc. (CEI) on February 15, 2011. The City was praised for its long-standing and productive relationship with CEI, not only in housing and economic development projects, but in support of the programs/outreach CEI promotes, such as the IDA Program, Youthbuild, the Earned Income Tax Credit, business development with local immigrants, support for StartSmart, work with New American entrepreneurs, and a forward, progressive approach to planning, community inclusion, and social equity. 2010 "Gold Start! Fit-Friendly Company!" – December 2010 - The American Heart Association deemed the City of Lewiston a "Gold Start! Fit-Friendly Company!" As a Gold level award recipient, the City has not only recognized the importance of a healthy workplace for its employees but has taken important steps to create a culture of physical activity in the workplace. The Spirt of the Androscoggin Award – November 2010 - The United Way of Androscoggin County awarded The Spirt of the Androscoggin Award to the All-America City of Lewiston. Led by United Way Employee Campaign Managers Joyce Ruby & Norm Beauparlant, Lewiston employees contributed $28,872. The one-time Spirit Award is presented to an organization to recognize its ongoing dedication to the community. 2009 Best Practices Award - May, 2009 - From the Maine Fire Protection Services Commission to the Lewiston Fire Department for its participation in the International Association of Firefighters/International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFF/IAFC) Fire Service Joint Labor-Management Wellness Fitness Initiative. 2009 Build Maine Awards - April 2009 - From the Association of General Contractors (AGC) - Sargent Corp. won the award for their work on the City of Lewiston's Water Street CSO Storage Facility Project. The award was presented at the AGC Annual Awards banquet at the Augusta Civic Center on April 15th. This same project was nominated and selected for a 1st place American Public Works Association Excellence Award (APWA), which was presented to the City at the Annual APWA Highway Congress held in ---PAGE BREAK--- Skowhegan. The City also received a 3rd place APWA Excellence Award for the Old Greene Road & No Name Pond Road Street Rehabilitation project. 2008 Preserve America Communities - July, 2008 - A community designation made by First Lady Laura Bush, Honorary Chair of the Preserve America initiative. The Preserve America initiative encourages and supports community efforts to preserve and enjoy America's cultural and natural heritage. The goals of the initiative include a greater shared knowledge about the nation's past; strengthened regional identities and local pride; increased local participation in preserving the country's cultural and natural heritage assets; and support for the economic vitality of our communities. Locally, the work of such entities as the Historic Preservation Review Board, Franco- American Heritage Center, and Museum LA are certainly responsible for the positive "preservation" being accomplished. 2008 Prevention Award - June, 2008 - Maine Alliance to Prevent Substance Abuse & Maine Methamphetamine Prevention Project "2008 Prevention Award" Winner - Lewiston's Chief William Welch of the Lewiston Police Department received a joint award with Chief Phil Crowell of the Auburn Police Department; Chief Dave Brooks of the Lisbon Police Department; Sheriff Guy Desjardins of the Androscoggin County Sheriffs Department; and Healthy Androscoggin. The award commended their departments' commitment to a collaborative approach to enforcing underage drinking laws, to include the development of the position of Alcohol Investigator for Androscoggin County. The law enforcement agencies mentioned have also adopted a Model Policy for Underage Drinking Enforcement to ensure a uniform approach to underage drinking across the county. Strategic Leadership & Governance Award from the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) touting the municipality's cost-saving "Health Care Management System by Prevention." "Tree City USA" – May 19, 2008 - The City of Lewiston received a Department of Conservation - Maine Forest Service Award for achieving "Tree City USA" status for the 5th year in a row at a ceremony in the Maine State Hall of Flags at the State Capitol in Augusta. The Tree City USA Program provides direction, assistance, attention, and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs in thousands of towns and cities that more than 120 million Americans call home. Heart Healthy Recognition Award - May 13, 2008 - The City of Lewiston was notified by the Maine Cardiovascular Health Council that its "Health Care Management System by Prevention," a partnership between the City and Central Maine Medical Center, had been selected to receive a Heart Healthy Recognition Award in the Worksite Award Category. The ---PAGE BREAK--- presentation was made during the 11th Annual Governor's Cardiovascular Health Summit on June 4th. The City of Lewiston's employee health care management program was nominated by Dr. N. Burgess Record, Medical Director for Outreach & Prevention - Central Maine Heart & Vascular Institute, Lewiston. "Healthy Androscoggin Award" – May 12, 2008 - The Lewiston Youth Advisory Council received a "Healthy Androscoggin Award" for their U Booze U Looze underage drinking awareness campaign and professional filming of SMASHED, a 22-minute film that has been approved for driver's education curriculum Statewide. The award was presented by Vicki Wiegman, Lewiston High School Substance Abuse Counselor, and the group was lauded by Attorney General Steven Rowe who was also in attendance. "Silver Award" - May 2008 - The City of Lewiston was once again awarded a "Silver Award" from Healthy Maine Partnerships in regards to placing a high priority on promoting good health for their employees. "Community Impact" United Valley Red Cross Heroes Award – April 24, 2008 - The Lewiston Youth Advisory Council, an offshoot of the City Council, was awarded a 2008 "Community Impact" United Valley Red Cross Heroes Award for their U Booze U Looze underage drinking awareness campaign and their 22-minute film SMASHED. 2007 Pink Tulip Award – June 26, 2007 - Presented by the Maine Cancer Foundation (MCF) to the City of Lewiston for it's success as a pilot site for the 2006-2007 Pink Tulip Project. 2007 All-America City – June 8, 2007 - The National Civic League named Lewiston, Maine as a 2007 All-America City, noting that an All-America City is one that is "courageous, visionary, and committed to the future." Silver 2007 Healthy Androscoggin Workplace Award April, 2007- Healthy Androscoggin has announced that the City of Lewiston had been designated a "silver" 2007 Healthy Androscoggin Workplace Award winner. The Healthy Androscoggin Workplace Award recognizes businesses and organizations within Androscoggin County that have placed a high priority on promoting good health for their employees in the areas of tobacco, physical activity, and nutrition. Awards reflect the categories of health focused upon by an organization. C.A.L.E.A. Accreditation – April 17, 2007 - For the fourth time, the Lewiston Police Department met the criteria of the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (C.A.L.E.A.) to remain a nationally accredited agency – still, at this time, the only police ---PAGE BREAK--- department in Maine to earn the honor. The LPD is one of approximately 500 agencies throughout the nation to be nationally accredited. All-America City Finalist – April 17, 2007 - National Civic League has informed the City of Lewiston that it has been selected as a "finalist" for a 2007 All-America City Award. Commended by the League for "a simply fantastic application," Lewiston successfully competed against other finalists cities to become one of ten cities designated the 2007 AAC title. United States Conference of Mayors Dollar Wise "Best Practices" On January 2, 2007, the United States Conference of Mayors Dollar Wise campaign listed Lewiston, Maine, as a "Best Practice," for its leadership in the annual Earned Income Tax Credit advocacy campaign as part of the Lewiston-Auburn Tax Credit Awareness Coalition (name changed to Lewiston/Auburn CA$H Coalition in 2010). 2006 Outstanding Campaign Award from the United Way of Androscoggin County. Received on November 16, 2006, for the City of Lewiston's "Employee United Way Campaign". City employees raised $26,251, topping both last year's giving and the 2006 goal! Named a Finalist: 2006 Award for Municipal Excellence by the National League of Cities (NLC) due to the successful initiatives of the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council. Strategic Leadership and Governance Excellence Award bestowed on the City of Lewiston by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) for the revitalization of its Southern Gateway, described as a "Strategic Municipal Image Campaign." (July 2006) Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States & Canada (GFOA) in regards to Lewiston's comprehensive FY 2005 annual financial report. (June 28, 2006) 2006 City Livability Award - Lewiston's leadership in the Earned Income Tax Credit awareness campaign - (June 3, 2006) Public Works Excellence Award received from the Maine Chapter of the American Public Works Association. The award recognized the Lewiston Public Works Department's Utility Coordination Program regarding collaborative interaction with Northern Utilities Gas Company re: their Cast Iron Main Replacement Program. (June 1, 2006) ---PAGE BREAK--- Maine Preservation Award was presented to the Marsden Hartley Cultural Center at the Lewiston Public Library. The award recognized the $3.5 million restoration of the Pilsbury Building at the corner of Pine and Lisbon Street. The award was given to the Center due to it 'exemplifying one of the best practices & principles of historic preservation in Maine.'" (May 12, 2006) Partnership with an Environmental Merit Award from the New England Office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for contributions towards preserving & protecting natural resources. President's Award from the Androscoggin Valley Council of Government's (AVCOG) regarding the establishment of the Western Maine Environmental Depot (April 2006). 2006 Applicant for All-America City Award - Lewiston is named a finalist for a 2006 All-America City Award. Public Service Leadership Award - Presented to City Administrator James A. Bennett by the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce (2006). Outstanding Service to Safety Award – Presented by the Safety and Health Council of Northern New England. (2006) 2005 Lewiston Youth Advisory Council Placed as "Top 6 Finalist" for the National Harris Wofford Awards - Youth Service America (December 2005) Center for Economic Progress, the National Community Tax Coalition - Highlighting Lewiston's Leadership in the Earned Income Tax Credit awareness campaign.
