Occupational Health and Safety Division Specific Staff Duties The City of Lewiston is a strong proponent of safety, training, education, and loss control. Irene Dostie, the Human Resources Generalist, along with her other duties, facilitates a safety incentive program along with workers compensation record keeping and management. Joanna Beller, Human Resources Administrative Secretary, along with her other duties, coordinates the Wellness Team Board. The current Safety Officer, Donald Mailhot, is a graduate of Central Maine Community College with certificates in Ergonomics, Occupational Health and Safety, and Construction Safety and Health. He is also a certified Occupational Health and Safety Technologist registered with the Bureau of Certified Safety Professionals. Along with training of city employees on OSHA standards and other recognized hazards, the safety officer also visits work sites, municipal properties, interviews injured employees, investigates traffic accidents with municipal employees, helps out at major incidents, as well as conducts ergonomic assessments for both municipal and school department employees. To further assist in the reduction of the city’s liability insurance costs from the Maine Municipal Association, the Safety Officer also addresses loss control issues with city property through thorough and timely investigations of resident injuries and complaints on city properties. Such investigations help to reduce liability costs by reducing lawsuits and settlements due to unknown factors in the incidents.
