CITY OF LEWISTON VISION & MISSION STATEMENTS 1 Adopted 8/15/2000 VISION STATEMENT Lewiston is committed to being a community of excellence. Positioned in the global community, it is a place of pride, aspiration, diversity, engagement, and accomplishment—in short, a civil society. MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the City of Lewiston is to meet the diverse needs of its citizens through a collaborative effort amongst other communities, community members, employees, elected officials, businesses, and social agencies. Collaboration is fostered through communication and consensus, shared decision making, and empowerment. The City shall strategically focus on those facets of civic life that enhance the quality of life for citizens by: • Aggressively promoting economic development and prosperity that is environmentally sensitive and fiscally responsible as the primary way of expanding the tax base and stabilizing the tax rate; • Creating mixed housing, affordable for all segments of the community, in an attractive residential mosaic; • Collaborating with the School Committee to provide our young people with the best education in the State of Maine and to encourage them to aspire to high standards of accomplishment and to promote lifelong learning opportunities for all members of the community; • Developing a transportation system that respects neighborhoods, is safe, and promotes pedestrian, bicycle, and public transit; • Promoting quality recreation opportunities and activities for all ages; • Fostering public safety programs that are preventative in nature and make the City a safe place to live; • Creating a lively, diverse cultural life, which makes Lewiston a haven for the arts in Maine and respects and celebrates Lewiston’s diverse heritage and cultural history, with special emphasis on the Franco-American population; • Caring for the natural environment, with special attention to the conservation of the Androscoggin River for its esthetic and recreational qualities as the “life blood of the Twin Cities;” and • Developing standards of measurement to gauge success in achieving community goals and objectives.
