City of Lewiston, Maine Recognizing “Family Day - A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children” Whereas: Sixteen years of surveys conducted by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University consistently found that the more often children and teenagers eat dinner with their families the less likely they are to smoke, drink, and use illegal drugs; and Whereas: The correlation between frequent family dinners and reduced risk for teen substance abuse is well documented; and Whereas: Our nation knows all too well that the use of illegal and prescription drugs and the abuse of alcohol and nicotine are very serious threats to the well-being of America’s children; and Whereas: Parents who are regularly engaged with their children–through such activities as frequent family dinners–truly make a vast difference in their loved ones’ daily lives; and Whereas: Sharing family dinners is not only a positive use of time but stores up many memories and conversations that children can remember and gain strength from. NOW THEREFORE, I, Laurent F. Gilbert, Sr., Mayor of the All-America City of Lewiston, proclaim Monday, September 26, 2011 as “Family Day – A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children TM” and urge all residents to recognize and participate in its observance.” Presented this 26th day of September, 2011 Mayor Laurent F. Gilbert, Sr.
