“Creating a Championship Community Athletic Complex and Providing More Opportunities for Lewiston to be Successful” ---PAGE BREAK--- HISTORY “The children grow with the community in all the aspects it offers. It’s a community that helps raise children. This upgrade assists everyone from all walks of life. We are a diverse community that can come together as one to make this project happen. We can do it.” Cathy Beckwith- Lewiston Resident The Franklin Athletic Complex was created in 1994, and was a needed change to the athletic facilities at Lewiston High School. Throughout the years, as the high school has added new athletic programs, the demands on the field have taxed the present field. It’s time to invest in a surface that will support continuous play through all seasons. Additionally, as the number of athletes in Lewiston continues to grow, there is a need to create a second field to ensure all community members may experience the benefits of this complex. An improvement to our athletic facilities would not be complete without resurfacing the exist- ing track. As a place where the entire community goes to exercise, the present surface has deteriorated throughout the years. The new track will be constructed with a thicker surface which will allow for greater usage by the community as a whole and support our growing track participants. As part of our track improvements, the finishing touches on the expanded cross country trails will be completed. Presently, our baseball and softball fields lack lights to support night games. With the ability to play at night, parents and spectators will have an increased ability to watch games without daytime conflicts. With one of the largest adult softball programs in the state, the City will finally have a facility that will support more games. The Franklin Pasture tennis court complex is in need of several improvements. The courts were constructed eighteen years ago. The courts’ surface and surrounding drainage system needs to be upgraded and construction of this project will start early fall of 2012. Additional betterments that we envision are shade areas, restrooms, on all courts, additional spectator seating, and fence and gate repairs. This eight bank court system is the place where many state and local championships have been achieved. The Lewiston Recreation Department’s tennis program is one of the strongest programs in the State. It comprises of youth from 4 years old through senior citizens. The adult tennis programs are also as vibrant and strong as the youth programs. Lewiston High School, Adult Education, the general public, as well as the Maine Principals Association, Bates College, U.S.M. Huskies also reserve the courts throughout the season. This project is one that will put Lewiston on the map and make it a destination to our City to experience championship level facilities and competitions. It will only add to the growing opportunities for Lewiston’s children. It will be an investment that has a far-reaching impact to the numerous school and recreation activities, as well as, the Lewiston community. ---PAGE BREAK--- “New athletic fields would help increase the athletic involvement of our school. They would also provide a better competitive environment for both the athletes and the spectators. ~Tori Denis, Lewiston H.S. Senior PROJECT & BUDGET The Franklin Pasture Trustees envision making the following changes/improvements to the Franklin Pasture Athletic Complex: ESTIMATED BUDGET TABULATION Softball Field Marcotte Park Shoebox Improvements Baseball Field Main Complex Tennis Courts Lacrosse & F. Hockey Complex Design & Permitting Contingency Future Maintenance Endowment $184,000 $38,000 $24,100 $252,000 $1,366,000 $98,000 $821,500 $247,688 $417,540 $1,551,172 These improvements will address the current issues that the Franklin Athletic Complex faces. In particular, it will address the demands being placed on the playing surface and the lack of proper drainage that exists which makes playing conditions unsafe on wet days. With municipal and school budgets constraints, it makes no sense to continually reinvest money in substantial field repairs multiple times in a fiscal year. - PAVED PARKING AREAS - LIGHTING 4 FACILITIES - 3 PRESS BOX & STORAGE FACILITIES - 2 NEW IRRIGATION SYSTEMS - RELOCATING TRACK EVENTS - 3 NEW SPECTATOR AREAS - ARTIFICIAL LAX & F.
