City of Laramie Community Development Department – Code Administration Division INFORMATIONAL BULLETIN #16 Home Occupations September 2002 PLEASE NOTE: Informational Bulletins should not be used as substitutes for actual codes and regulations. Detailed information regarding codes and regulations can be obtained by calling the Code Administration Division at (307) 721-5271. “Home Occupation” is defined as a business, profession, occupation or trade conducted for personal gain or support of the residential occupation and conducted within a residential building or structure accessory to a residential use. A home occupation shall be considered as a permitted accessory use in any zoning district, but is subject to the following limitations: • The use shall be conducted entirely within a dwelling and carried on by the inhabitants living there and no others. • The use shall be clearly incidental and secondary to the use of the dwelling for dwelling purposes and shall not change the character thereof. • The total area used for the home occupation shall not exceed one-half of the floor area of the living unit. • There shall be no exterior advertising or other display. • There may be only incidental sale of stocks, supplies or products. • There shall be no exterior storage on the premises of material or equipment used as a part of the home occupation. • There shall be no offensive noise, vibration, smoke, dust, odors, heat or glare noticeable at or beyond the property line. • A home occupation, including studios or rooms for instruction, shall provide additional off-street parking area adequate to accommodate the needs created by the home occupation. A home occupation includes such uses as art studios, beauty shops, dressmaking or millinery workshops, offices for insurance or real estate sales, offices for professional services, and teaching. A home occupation prohibits uses such as clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, tourist homes, animal hospitals or restaurants.
