Laramie Fire Department Employment Qualifications and Information Minimum requirements for the position are: 1. AGE—All applicants must be at least nineteen years of age to participate in the testing process. 2. CITIZENSHIP—An applicant must be a citizen of the United States or a legal resident alien. 3. EDUCATION—Applicants must have achieved High School graduation. General Education Development (GED) may be substituted for this requirement at the discretion of the Fire Civil Service Commission and the Fire Chief. 4. RESIDENCY—Applicants need not be residents of the City of Laramie to participate in testing or to be offered employment; however, residence within a thirty minute response to Fire Station #1 must be established and maintained if appointed. 5. HEALTH—The position of firefighter requires excellent health. All appointments are contingent upon the applicant successfully passing physical and laboratory examinations. The laboratory evaluation will include drug screening. The applicant’s eyesight must meet FAA Vision Standards with normal depth perception. 6. EMT-BASIC CERTIFICATION—The Laramie Fire Department’s emergency operations are weighted very strongly toward pre-hospital medical care. All sworn personnel are required to maintain, at least, EMT-Basic certification through the State of Wyoming. Preference will be given to those candidates carrying such certification. Candidates will go through the following process to be considered for employment: 1. APPLICATION—Applications will be accepted during the 12-month period preceding an entrance examination. Application forms can be picked up at the Laramie Fire Department Station 1, the City of Laramie Human Resources Office, or downloaded from ---PAGE BREAK--- the City of Laramie website. 2. COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION—Applicants are offered employment interviews only after passing a three-stage competitive examination with a high enough score to be placed on an eligibility list. The number of top scorers placed on the eligibility list is at the discretion of the Fire Chief. The examination consists of a written examination, a physical performance test, and an oral examination. A minimum score of 70% is required on the written examination to qualify an applicant to participate in the physical performance test. The physical performance test is Pass/Fail. Upon successful completion of the physical performance test, an oral examination will be scheduled. An average score of 75% (written and oral examinations) is required. Applicants passing all three stages of the examination are placed on an eligibility list certified by the Fire Civil Service Commission. Selections and appointments are the prerogative of the Fire Chief from the top five applicants appearing on the eligibility list. The list will normally be valid for two years. The Civil Service Commission may de-certify the list and authorize a new examination during that two year period. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION—Offers of appointment are made contingent upon successful completion of a physical examination by the Department’s designated physician. Physical defects which cannot reasonably be accommodated, and which would bar the applicant from firefighting work, will disqualify the applicant. The City of Laramie reserves the right to require any special or technical examinations. The City is responsible for the cost of these examinations. 4. BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION—Offers of appointment are made contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. The investigation includes, but is not limited to; employment and pre-employment records, records of complaint, arrest, trial and/or convictions for alleged or actual violations of law, including criminal, civil ---PAGE BREAK--- and/or traffic records, whether the records are of a public, private, or confidential nature. These criteria can be found at: http://warmpool.org/index.asp General information of interest: 1. SALARY—Current starting salary for entry-level firefighter is $3,519/month. Normal increases over time and with satisfactory performance bring the salary to $4,732/month. All salaries are defined through Collective Bargaining Agreement. 2. ADVANCEMENT—Attaining certain certifications will allow firefighters to increase their salaries within the rank of Firefighter. Equipment Operator, Company Officer, Shift Commander, Division Chief, and Fire Chief are all positions above the rank of Firefighter. Firefighters have the opportunity to advance into those positions through a competitive testing and promotional process. 3. WORK SCHEDULE—The Laramie Fire Department operates under a 56-hour work week for shift personnel. The firefighter is expected to be on duty from 0800 hours one day until 0800 hours the following day. The firefighter is then off duty for the next 48 hours. Firefighters are also required to be available for emergency call-back during off duty time. 4. UNIFORMS AND PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT—Firefighters are provided with complete uniforms and appropriate personal protective equipment as determined by the Fire Chief. 5.
