The City’s outdoor amenities are currently guided by 2 documents; the 2003 Parks, Recreation and Trails Master Plan Update and the 2005 Open Space and Trails Master Plan. Through an extensive public input process scheduled to begin later this year, these two guiding plans will be merged, amended, and enhanced to reflect the vision and desires of the community. “In order to best service the public, it is vital that residents and various user groups within our community provide input as to what the top issues are that need to be addressed,” said Monte Stevenson, Director of Parks, Open Space & Golf. Limited funding sources make it critical for municipalities to establish goals, action plans, and projects that accurately service their users. Master plans help accomplish these objectives by collecting information, analyzing data, setting goals, and formulating funding strategies. “As stewards of public funds, it is our responsibility to provide citizens with amenities that serve the general community best.” Valuable support from the community further strengthened the successful grant application. Ms. Stout’s second grade class at Lafayette Elementary wrote creative letters asking GOCO to fund a new master plan that would provide for safer routes to playgrounds and school sites. Local youth sports organizations outlined needs for additional playing fields, and the Latino Advisory Board expressed its desire to be involved in the process to ensure amenities for all community members are provided. # # # Other Parks, Open Space, and Golf News • The 2002 Open Space Legacy Tax, which expires in 2012, will be put to a vote on the November ballot.
