CITY OF LAFAYETTE RESOLUTION NO. 2013-05 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LAFAYETTE SUPPORTING THE GRANT APPLICATION FOR A PATHWAYS: ADVANCING INFORMAL STEM LEARNING GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION FOR A LARGE-SCALE MATHEMATICAL CALCULATOR IN A CITY PARK WHEREAS, the National Science Foundation is providing funding for investing in research and development of innovative and field-advancing out-of-school Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning and emerging STEM learning environments; and WHEREAS, the City of Lafayette supports University of Colorado staff in their submittal of the grant application; and, WHEREAS, the City of Lafayette recognizes the significance of out-of-school learning that makes learning Lifelong, Life Wide (occurring across multiple venues) and Life Deep (occurring at different levels of complexity); and, WHEREAS, the City of Lafayette supports the design and construction of a large-scale mathematical calculator which operates by counting squares; and, WHEREAS, the STEM-based project will benefit the community at large, local elementary students and teachers, and community groups involved in outreach activities. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City Council of the City of Lafayette, Colorado, strongly endorses the application to the National Science Foundation in support of the mathematical calculator and agrees to support the grant application by permitting the use of city-owned, designated park land and providing on-going maintenance of the project.
