Lafayette Fire Department Commercial Knox Box Installation and Maintenance Commercial Knox Boxes Knox Boxes shall be required on all new buildings protected by an automatic fire sprinkler system, automatic fire alarm system and other special hazard fire protection systems. Other buildings or occupancies as deemed necessary by the Fire Prevention Bureau shall be required to install a Knox Box in accordance with the City of Lafayette Fire Code. All Knox Boxes and their installation shall be approved by the Fire Department. Inspection of Knox Boxes shall be the responsibility of the Fire Department. Maintenance of Knox Boxes shall be the responsibility of the property owner or manager. Keys for any Knox product shall remain in the possession of the City of Lafayette Fire Department. No Knox keys shall be loaned to any person without authorization of the Fire Prevention Bureau or a Chief Officer. Codes used for any Knox product shall not be communicated to any unauthorized person or agency. The following additional criteria shall be utilized by Fire Department personnel in inspecting and maintaining Knox Boxes and other emergency entry products: 1. Access to the occupancy through use of the Knox Box will occur only during an emergency request for service. The keys should not be used for routine inspections. 2. When inspecting an occupancy with a Knox Box, fire inspectors should verify the operation of the Knox Box and the keys contained in the Knox Box. There will typically be an inventory list of keys contained in the Knox Box. 3. Any additional Knox Boxes or duplicate keys shall be formally requested through the Fire Prevention Bureau.
