Lafayette Fire Department Fire Code Self-Inspection Guide Sheet Building Address: o Legible from the street. o All rear and side access doors should be addressed or labeled to indicate the space or business it serves. On-Site Fire Hydrants: o No obstructions within 3’ of the sides and rear and unobstructed from the front. o Clear height to bottom of large hose outlet of at least 1 foot. o Hydrants subject to vehicular damage must properly protected from vehicles. Knox Box: o Contains proper keys & applicable access codes for your business. Fire Protection Systems: o Systems properly inspected & maintained: o Fire sprinkler system o Fire alarm system o Fire standpipe system o Commercial cooking hood system o Fire department connection (FDC) on exterior of the building is unobstructed – protective caps or covers. Rubbish Containers: o Containers should not be located where subject to smoking materials or ignition sources. o Dumpsters greater than 5-1/3 cubic feet provided with lids. Portable Fire Extinguishers: o Minimum 5-pound A-B-C type for general-purpose areas. o 75 feet maximum travel distance. o K-rated extinguisher for commercial kitchen hood systems. o Annual inspection required. o 6-year maintenance for dry chemical or water extinguishers. o 12-year hydrostatic test and maintenance for dry chemical or water extinguishers. o 5-year hydrostatic test for carbon dioxide (CO2) extinguishers. Combustible Rubbish: o Removed at least daily. o Stored in approved containers located in approved locations. Storage of Materials and Equipment: o No storage in aisles or corridors. o Maintained 2 feet below ceiling. o Maintained 18 inches below sprinkler head deflectors. Combustible Storage: o Must be orderly and not present a hazard to people. o Storage is prohibited in: o Boiler room o Mechanical room o Electrical equipment room ---PAGE BREAK--- Fueled Equipment: o Storage prohibited within buildings, unless specially designed for that purpose. Means of Egress: ` o Clear and unobstructed at all times. o Path of exit travel clearly identified. o Doors easily distinguishable as an exit door. o Emergency power/lighting operational. Exit Door Locks: o Operational and appropriate for exit type. o Must be operable from inside without use of keys, special effort or special knowledge during normal business hours. Panic Hardware (if applicable): o Operational and appropriately located on or about the door. Exit Lights: o Operational and visible from means of egress. o Illuminated when building is occupied. Electrical Hazards: o Portable electric heaters should be 3 feet from combustible materials. o All electrical cords should be in good condition with no abrasions, cuts, splits, or frays. Plug connections should not be altered or damaged. o Extension cords should be used only with portable equipment. o Electrical outlets shall have approved protective covers. o Electrical control panels front area unobstructed for a minimum width of 30 inches and a height of 6 feet. o Electrical panels breakers properly labeled. o Breakers or protective blanks are required on all panels. Flammable and Combustible Liquids: o No smoking in storage or use areas. o Where permitted indoor storage shall not exceed 10 gallons. o All storage shall be in approved flammable liquid storage containers. Hazardous Materials: o All materials should be stored in approved containers. o Storage areas should be identified by signs or placards.
