Roofing Code Information/Checklist: • The City of Lafayette requires a permit for any roof work requiring one square (100 sq. ft.) or more of shingles. However, we will not specify whether an entire reroof is required. • 2021 International Residential Code and International Building Code Amendment: Class 4 Impact Resistant Shingles are required. Documentation or packaging of Class 4 IR Shingles is required for inspection along with the Inspection Record Card (effective March 15, 2021) • Asphalt roofs shall have no more than two layers. • Drip edge/rake metal is required. • Ice and watershield is required. • Shingles must comply with ASTM D7158 (Class G or or shingles must comply with D3161 Class F (For wind rating) • Commercial Roofs - Low sloped roofs directly above cooled conditioned space shall comply with roof reflectance requirements-see 2021 IECC Section C402.3 Table C402.3 Minimum Roof Reflectance and Emittance options. Roofing Permits • Use the regular building permit application when applying for a roof permit. We can send you the MyGov account activation for your company. • Contractors working in Lafayette need to be licensed with the City of Lafayette. • Pay online with your MyGov account or drop of a check in City’s water utility payment box. Reroof Inspection Requirements The following requirements must be met when calling for a roof inspection: • One final inspection – no mid-roof inspections • A ladder is required for reroof inspections. • The ladder must be safe and sturdy and tied off securely by the contractor. • The top of the ladder must be no less than three feet above the roofs edge. • The ladder must provide access to all levels of the roof. • Please give the roof pitch when calling for an inspection. • Please write the roof pitch on the yellow inspection record card. • Be sure to post documentation or packaging of Class 4 shingles on site. Inspection Line: [PHONE REDACTED] – Need permit number, address, contact name, and phone number. Please do not call for a roof inspection when the weather forecast is calling for snow. The Building Safety Division does not carry over roof inspections or make multiple trips to see if the roof is clear for inspection. It is the responsibility of the contractor to ensure the roof is clear and dry before calling for an inspection. Roof inspections must be ready by 9:00 am and will occur the same day until 4:00 pm weather and daylight permitting. It is the responsibility of the contractor to advise the property owner(s) that inspections have been scheduled and to ensure all animals are properly restrained and or inside when the inspector arrives and any Roofing Code Information/Checklist 1290 S. The inspection will not occur if these requirements have not been satisfied. Final roof inspections will only occur from the ground in the following conditions: • The roof pitch is over 5/12; note on card and give the roof pitch when you call for an inspection. • The roof is over 2-stories. • It is a tile roof. Failure to comply with any of the requirements will result in cancellation of the inspection. A re-inspection fee of $75 will be assessed before the inspection can be rescheduled. The Inspector reserves the right to refuse an inspection if, in their opinion, conditions are unsafe due to weather or failure to comply with the requirements.
