Nurse Practitioner – Casual Public Health Department Page 1 of 2 KLICKITAT COUNTY, WASHINGTON POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: Nurse Practitioner EFFECTIVE DATE: April 18, 2017 REPORTS TO: Public Health Director PAY GRADE: $50.00 Per Hour DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Public Health Department FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt LOCATION: Goldendale/White Salmon POSITION STATUS: Casual BASIC JOB PURPOSE/FUNCTION: Responsible for providing nursing care in all clinical and program areas including immunizations, sexually transmitted disease, family planning, prenatal, communicable disease and adult health. Positions of this class provides medical care, performs comprehensive medical exams, limited minor surgical procedures, consultation, advice on patient problems as well as direction on program and procedural matters to Public Health Nurses (RN or LPN) and program support positions. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: 1. Employee works with the director or other supervisors responsible for assigning and reviewing work, scheduling work to maintain a balanced workload, providing in service training and orientation. Provides medical consultation and direction on difficult problems and is available to the person serving as program supervisor or the health officer. 2. Performs comprehensive client centered examinations including medical history, physical examination, drawing blood and obtaining specimens needed for cultures, performing and interpreting lab tests, charting results on the patient’s record and diagnosing the patient’s condition. 3. Writes prescriptions or administers medication, and instructs the patent on proper usage. Makes appropriate referrals to private physicians. Investigates patient contacts. 4. Completes and submits CD/STD forms to appropriate state agencies. 5. Takes the medical histories, performs physical examinations, obtains specimens and performs lab tests, according to current care standards and established protocols and counsels the patient on available birth control methods and their potential side effects. Performs pregnancy testing as appropriate. Schedules follow-up appointments or makes medical referrals as needed. 6. Helps Health Educator develop, promote and present instructional materials to schools, parents and civic groups. Answers questions from the public and local health care providers concerning department services and programs. Services on health care related committees and ad hoc advisory groups within the community. 7. Provides direct service in other programs to clients in a back-up role. ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES: 1. May train, prioritize, direct and review the work of lower classified employees or volunteers. 2. Performs other related duties as assigned. ---PAGE BREAK--- Nurse Practitioner – Casual Public Health Department Page 2 of 2 REQUIREMENTS/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques and related tools/equipment to accomplish the basic function of this position, including any safety and/or legal requirements. This may, but not necessarily, include specialized skills. Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Nurse Advance Practice Degree (required licensure for ARNP) Masters Degree in Nursing with advanced training and certification as a Nurse Practitioner with a specialty in Family Practice or Women’s Health Care. Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and successful completion of course work or training in a clinical nursing specialty, as required by the position, from an accredited university program. Completion of an approved pharmacy course for Nurse Practitioner. Title 10 experience preferred Licenses, Certificates, and Other Requirements Valid Washington license as a Registered Nurse Possession of/ability to obtain a Washington license as Nurse Practitioner with prescription authority at time of appointment. National Nurse Practitioner Certification Malpractice Insurance Valid state driver's license in state of residence WORKING CONDITIONS: This position requires the ability to perform those activities to complete the essential functions of the job, either with or without reasonable accommodation.
