Klickitat County Solid Waste Dept. is offering home composting bins to residents of Klickitat County. The cost for each bin is $30 and we ask that participants agree to take a follow up survey via email three and six months after the purchase of the bin. The purchase of the bin includes a manual for use and an introductory composting session. These composting bins are available at a reduced price thanks to a grant through the Washington State Department of Ecology. Earth Machine composters retail for $99 online and in stores but with grant funding we are able to cover the majority of the cost. 1 Chose a compost system: barrel turning bin, grass cycling, heap, mulching, pallet holding, plastic bin, soil incorporation, three bin turning, two bin turning, wire mesh, worm bin. 2 3 Gather your materials: food and yard waste, paper, and other compostables. Add to your system, layering browns and greens until full. 4 Pile maintenance: check temperature, turn pile every couple weeks, check moisture levels and add water as needed. 5 Use composted materials! Compost is great for gardens, flowers, potted herbs, lawns, or just making your soil healthier. Balance your greens and browns to achieve a 30:1 Carbon to Nitrogen ratio. See our compost calculator on our website! 2
